I think Epibremnum aureum are something really special, not only the fact that they are able to withstand almost every Substrat/conditions, but also their growth. They tend to mature even without a moss pole, just by climbing up any surface.

As many others, I've also bought a manjula pothos after seeing yours and she is happily climbing a moss pole ever since. Her leaves are getting huge. I have 3 cuttings climbing and there is no more space between them, I'll have to remove one of the cuttings. Learned all this with you. Thank you so much❤

So here goes I live in rural NSW approx 450 klms from Sydney and watching the Botanical Garden was amazing thank you for taking the time to do you tube on it. I think most people who have a passion for plants appreciate behind the scenes look. for me it was the rarity of the plant that needs a certain insect to fertilise the plant and is now critically endangered. Love that you got permission from Bard before you disclosed his personal details (great humour) As mentioned I have just stated watching You tube because of having a smart TV, So I havent seen all your videos though working way through them. I need the basics, Questions for me When you look at roots-how do you know which are dead, root rot? What is tissue culture and when purchasing a plant from tissue culture is it more susceptible to disease? What is the best way to grow tip cutting that are purchased through the post? When a plant needs a certain temperature is it more important for the roots or the foliage. As we can go below zero where I live? You may have answered these question in other videos. Dont give up I need to be inspired by you as I dont have any friends that have a passion for plants. I also wanted to contact AJ but I dont do instagram and not sure how I can do it. I wanted to purchase some plants from AJ but not willing to give card details over the net I can use Pay Pal but not sure of the other payment methods AJ uses. Have you ever done a mixed species moss pole? I’ve been wondering if that might look nice to fill out a plant with long petioles or large intermodal spacing - so the pole is more concealed? I guess the challenge would be choosing a secondary plant that would stay kind of small on the pole and not develop huge mature leaves since all your plants tend to be super-sized. 😂 And of course finding two plants that aesthetically work together. Micans and melanochrysum would perhaps be a good combo. Also curious if you’ve ever disassembled a moss pole, removed the plant and transferred it to an another pole? I just got some baby climbers and they are comically small so I improvised micro versions of a grow vertical (like 3 squares of grid across and a plastic back) so I could fit it in an appropriate sized pot. I don’t think the micro poles have the structural integrity to put a regular pole extension on it. I was thinking I’d maybe take the whole thing apart when it’s time, carefully put the roots thru a grid and then stuff with moss. Do you have a better suggestion?

Hey Jan, how does watering work when the extension pole is not in the middle? Do you need to water the lower and the larger pole? Looking at your El Salvador, that seems kinda impossible, since the new shoots block the top of the smaller pole.. 🤔 thanks for the video, chop and extends never get old 😃👍🌱
There is a little gap between the shoots & the opening of the pole so I can still pour water down the smaller side bit. It also absobs water from the larger pole next to it. Haven't really noticed any issues but extending it on the middle seems a bit easier for watering purposes

I still water as per normal process :) just have 2 poles to water now :P How much water it takes really depends on: how much moss the pole holds, how dry the moss is (i.e. how much water can it absorb), how big the plant is (i.e. how much water can the plant drink) and of course the environment the pole is in as well. Could be anything from half a litre to 2 litres.

The reason for the question is, when you say you can hear how crunchy your pole is, that doesn't translate on camera. We can't hear it. We can't touch it, and I don't have years of experience with moss poles.
I love your Manjula so much lol that's definitely goals for when I finally get one. I did have a thought though while watching this video. Would you possibly be willing to try an idea? When you do your chop and extends, instead of extending a moss pole entirely filled with moss, do you think putting your potting medium in the bottom part of the extension would help when putting the extended part of the pole in a pot later on in the future? I've always struggled with getting a lot of the moss off of the roots when putting the extension in a new pot with medium and I've always feared for root rot. But my medium isn't chunky enough to try this idea. But I just wanted to share this thought with you in case you'd like to try it.
I haven't ever had any issues with the Moss inside the pot, i'm just taking out as much as I can to prevent anything. I feel like having a bit or aroid mix in between the moss poles would stop the pole from neatly absorbing water & make a mess instead (and the aesthetics would drive me wild hahah )
With a younger plant with small leaves it would be fine just to swap over the top and bottom pole, right? So that the plant can extend onto what was the bottom pole in which the plant has smaller roots and isn't taking up much space.
I love the idea of just indefinitely chopping and extending and adding more stems back into the bottom of the pot. When you inevitably run out of space for all the poles side by side, could you gently remove some of the stems from their poles and plant them all into one pole? Or would the roots not come out of the old pole, or not fit into the new one? I’ve yet to try growing anything on a moss pole; I’m waiting until we’re out of our toddler era 🙃
outstanding!! i'm going to grow golden pothos for my next pole project! say, would you care to elaborate a bit on one of your pole practices? when you initially add a pole to a pot, you always take care to fill a few inches at the bottom of the pole with aroid mix rather than sphagnum moss. Why do you do this? thanks!
Moss has a lot of water retention & within the pot there is less aeration so I want the part inside the pot to be more aerated & well draining and not retain too much moisture :)
I wonder did you come up with this idea or is it common practice? because you actually ate with this and I still don't understand how come not more people are doing it when it looks easy to do. i don't have access to moss or else i would have done this because holy moly your plants are beautiful - and so are you! best of luck king
I didn't come up with it, it's basically the concept of air-layering which is very common practice applied to vertical growing. I just gave it the name 'chop & extend' :)

Ex.- on your el salvador, do you think it would be unstable/fall over if you didn't have them all growing out of multiple poles?

I'm using the clear click system moss poles which I e seen you use recently, but my plants quickly outgrow these. Have you extended and added support to any of yours? Do you have a video or can you make one please
I have a question about your poles. How do you water them without getting the ground completely wet? If I use the bottle technique the soil gets really wet and I start noticing sings of root rot
Are you keeping the poles moist to encourage new root growth? Also keep in mind that new nodes will root into the pole, old nodes are very unlikely to root into the pole in hindsight

It would have been nice to see you cut a huge leaf and prop it to see how big it grows.
You can’t propagate from just a leaf :) u need at least a node :)

You can’t really remove the plant from the pole unless u break down the pole completely. And u cannot fit one on a pole in hindsight :)

Majority of my plants are on just one pole and I haven’t noticed any differencenin stability :) i mainly do it for aesthetic & propagation reasons :)

Will new leaves grow at the bottom of the original pole where the older leaves had fallen off?
The plant will usually send growth hormones into the top … so to get leaves down there it would be best to gove it a cut :)
Are you able to just water the top moss pole and it drips down through both of the bottom ones?
Yeah kind of but sometimes I also pour a bit of water over the second one :)
None of my poles have roots growing in them even after half a year :(
They have grow lights, GT nutrients, it's not too cold/windy/hot..
Are you keeping the poles moist to encourage new root growth? Also keep in mind that new nodes will root into the pole, old nodes are very unlikely to root into the pole in hindsight
