New subscriber here. At my late 60s I'm starting to create. An art school story - I realize how lucky one of my brothers was back in the late 70s. He gave up a full sports scholarship at a university to study art (the school did not have a art program at the time, and it was long before internet days). He transferred to one of the top art schools in New York City. In his first year, he had a professor tell him - "You have this; there is nothing we need to teach you, this is your time, go..." And he did, and went on to have a very successful career. When I say lucky, I don't mean he didn't have to work hard at his art business, but that he had this wise gracious art professor in the very beginning. Thank you for your lessons, Shadow Artiste

Amazing..you’re giving the best advice I’ve ever heard. I’m a 61 year old teacher dying to retire and paint. I can tell you this advice is golden. Thank you so much!!
Excellent video! And so very true what you said about "The Club", it gets me mad when artists are given massive museum spaces to display crudely thrown together plaster figures with cigarettes stuck in their butts as seen in "The Young British Artist" movement! I usually give a rant at the rubbish on show until my husband leads me away before we attract too much attention from other gallery visitors....
very true about art school assimilation. I was an older part time student and got to witness many classes of incoming freshmen who were preps and after one semester their entire identity fit the mold of what they thought a hipster indie art school student was. I get it though, they were young and I probably would have fell into that too
This is the best breakdown I’ve ever seen-no BS. I find myself wondering, why don’t schools teach this? But no, they don’t! You’ve laid everything out as simply as possible, and I completely agree with you. I’m so glad I followed my dreams and didn’t let others’ failures hold me back. 💯🎨
I lived for 5 years in a part of East London famous for being Artist Central. Once or twice a year they would have open studio events in the repurposed warehouses they were working from. I’d go down there as an interested potential buyer who knew basically nothing about art, and they’d make it impossible for me to buy anything. 95% of pieces had no prices on. They didn’t have websites, let alone social media. If i screwed up my courage and asked about the cost of something i liked, most of the time i got vague answers. Eventually i gave up and stopped bothering with any of it. So yeah, that’s what uk art schools were turning out at least until 6 years ago!
Hey my dude! Always nice to see one of your videos. I'm going to start implementing this plan for my comics I also saw the video the other day with you talking about comics as well which was really inspiring

I can draw with almost anything that has ink! It doesn't have any turning back when i put it on paper and i think that makes me wanna draw more and be better, coz i can see my sketch and correct myself and then study this one. Thanks for reading!...
Subscribed ❤ im on this journey but only stage 1. I dropped out of art school years ago and felt like a failure so i didn't touch an art supply until a month ago, and im on fire for it now. I did spend a lot of my off time working on my looks (woman here), working out, building a bod, work in makeup, hair, med spas so i know i can use that to my advantage for social media attention eventually 😅 even though ive never been one to show off online with OF or anything haha. Anyways i know it's harder for men to gain online attention and i appreciate what you're doing.
I think developing your style and choosing your medium has to come first--how do you do a logo that shows who you are in a glance if you're just winging it? I think I can go straight to year 4. I've been an artist for over 60 years, and YES, all art does start with drawing. My parents were shocked to find me trying to draw the things around me with my brothers crayons---when I was only a year old. My father brought home a battered chalkboard and I worked on that for a long time before I moved on to paper. From there my father bought me watercolors when I was six, and I sold my first two paintings for $50. I was ten. From there, he saved up and got me a set of Windsor Newton oils--some of which I still have! After a few years of working with those, I started feeling uneasy about all the chemicals that are necessary for traditional oil paints. How do you safely dispose of them? That's when I fell in love with acrylics. To this day, I still paint with the liquid kind that I first used, but I've experimented with all sorts of things--spray paint in layers with shapes to block out the color in spots from the layers below. I've even used nail polish and house paint! I've been poor all my life, so I didn't have the luxury of having the best materials. I do know that how much you pay does not necessarily dictate the quality of the materials. I won an art contest and I won a HUGE collection of very expensive acrylics and a big drawing pad that you can also paint on. They were nice, yes. But not any nicer than anything I've ever used!
Excellent roadmap!! And the logo bit was unexpected but so logical! As a graphic designer too I’ve always pushed other artists to get a logo together asap!
Great video! I had a very similar experience to you when I was in art school. Now I teach and when kids ask me if they should get a studio degree, I tell them absolutely not- learn branding and marketing on TH-cam, get out there and work it! Do local art fairs to see if people like it, take constructive criticism and refine your style!😊👍🏼
I love your content dude its amazing, I am an artist myself and I love your take on art and how its you who comes up with your style and how not to change. I also don't know si eres puerto ricano porque se nota, because us hispanics got that radar lol. Love your art bro!
You brought up something very interesting. Mmmmmm. I can see how I can come across like a conservative. That's funny. I wouldn't necessarily state that you're conservative, but your views on certain things would be considered that lol. And I like that, a lot of people like to take sides and it's nice to hear something refreshing from someone who just wants to make art. I think that your attitude of just making art is something that is forgotten in our industry, people who get into the art industry seem to forget the reasoning why they got into it in the first place. But I think we should definitely keep in touch, I like your art and I like the realism that you have for some of the animal pieces you have. I mainly like to draw cartoons lol like Sonic and stuff

I have been liking your videos. Alternatively, some of the greatest artists who pioneered new ways of painting were not from 2024, but in fact existed in the 1600's. I would argue it would be a mistake to discredit them and call them all "irrelevant" to aspiring artists. In fact, they were superior artists of skill than most today. that is why we still talk about them now hundreds of years later. I think this basic plan is fine, but no need to discredit a real education to do so.
You have a point, but I think I'm speaking more to the gritty artist, street, mixed media, wild ones, not scholars. I welcome all points of view, thank you
@@shadowartiste Thanks, I continue to like what you are posting. I have spent my life working jobs to support my art, and do sell some paintings. Its a real struggle.
Exactly. In a hundred years people will still appreciate van Eyck, Rembrandt and Vermeer. Who will have even heard of this guy with his DIY art degree?
Being who she is might be the frowny, earthing girl with the hairy armpits. Dropping social rules that I have to smile, shave, be nice all the time, dress a certain way, look a certain way, etc., was life changing for me.

Thank you. I needed some real talk. I did art school and dropped out when I saw through it. I did art for 20 years. I lived like a rock star and then watched it go to hell because I forgot who I was. I need to start over and do it right as an adult. Back to square 1. I might not have 4 years to wait because these work boots hurt my back.
I just found you, thanks TH-cam algorithm, and LOVE this! I’ve been artistic my whole life but mostly just in my head as I have been confined by life circumstances, shall we say. Below is a “short” (shortish 😂) story of how I came to this point in time and space, of finding and subscribing to this channel - because I LOVE the advice and attitude! Oh, and my story is just that. I am NOT looking for sympathy etc, it just is what it is, if that makes sense? Anyway, now I’m in my early 60’s and mostly on my own. I’ve come across 2 things. The first is I finally found a therapist who acknowledged my stuff (which REALLY helped me to feel seen and not completely invisible, to everyone) and is now helping me to navigate, process and mitigate the years and years of abuse. The second one has an A and B. A is I stopping watching the news, not just mainstream (I haven’t watched that for at least 2 years) but also alternative sites. I’ve stopped watching all the “bad stuff” that’s going on “out there” (I watch a teeny bit but I’m pretty strict on how much I allow myself to consume). That has really helped my anxiety etc. so boosted my mental health in a good direction. I can’t recommend enough at least limiting how much of that you watch and not just consuming it “mindlessly”, like doom scrolling. Anyway, Part B is that I’ve switched from all the negative stuff to following and watching “art” videos from all sorts of everyday artists. I have loads of art supply stuff. Stuff I bought for my very creative daughter when she was doing art at school, then fashion design at university. When she moved out she left lots of it here. Everything she does now is mostly digital. That was GREAT for me because even reasonable quality art stuff is expensive and as I live on a disability pension it was such a blessing (perhaps done accidentally on purpose 😊🥰). Given my circumstances I can’t go to “school” or other classes but I also felt really stuck. Too many years of having to bury my creativity has left me feeling like my creative mind is… stuck in limbo. I have NO IDEA of my style … so finding this video was such wonderful (TH-cam algorithm) serendipity because with all the steps laid out, this gives me a PLACE TO START! I’m not actually thinking of selling my art, though if that were to happen at some point that would be amazing. What I’m hoping for is it will help me get out all the stuff stuck in my head. Help me feel GOOD about MYSELF. Help me to understand me, properly, that I CAN, I’m NOT useless etc etc. I’m sure you get the idea. So, I cannot thank you enough @shadowartiste for your no nonsense approach, for not hiding the fact that you have to work but most all for your presence on here, for all the time and effort you put into helping others. I look forward to more videos and, in the meantime, binging on all the ones already posted while a sit with a sketchbook and pencil! Blessings to you, from Australia❤🇦🇺
Love it! Your program would have saved me thousands of dollars and years of frustration! You could do videos on the history of the push for society to support ugly art. It almost seems like a form of brain washing for society to reject everything meaningful and beautiful and replace it with drips, drops, dribbles and scribbles! Now, all of a sudden eveybody is an "artist" if they can type in a promt or dribble paint on a canvas. It's a slap in the face to artists who have sacrificed blood, sweat and tears to master their craft.😖
Bro, you look like me, and I look like you. Bet you're a blast to hang out with. Great video, great talk. Thanks man. I'm in Pennsylvania, USA, hmu if your ever down here. Much love.
Good talk! I hope students would truly do this instead of realising it years later after going through as you put it, year 1-4, but without having done anything lol
gotta say a lot of what you are saying is accurate but I also think what you're trying to get accross is a pretty heavy lift for younger folks. From the look of ya Im assuming your around my age and I just know those life lessons came hard... Im curious what were you doing for the first part of this life that you are now deciding to be an " artist " I enlisted right out of highschool so I was already mid 20s when I got in to school and mine was not a typical school, "ACCD" I was part of the last wave that was taught by the old school working professional designers. so maybe the experience is different... Anyway keep it up man Im enjoying the vids :P
I got married and raised a family, I put everyone's needs before mine, happens to lots of men, unfortunately. Woke up one day and decided, the rest of my life is for me. So, here we are...
Sketchbook for drawing + a big spiral bound lined notebook, rip images out of magazines, write notes from art videos, book recommendations, whatever interests you, write it down. Print it out Glue it in there. Its an inspiration book you can look at to inform you when you are ready to make a piece of art. You will see common themes in the stuff you are drawn to.
Love this!
Glad you found it!

Let's go man! Wanna run through a brick wall after this one!
Love hearing that! thank you!
I like the plan all laid out. I'm strong in some areas, and have some things I need to work on.
Bravo majstore

Bravo maestro!
Very nice video! Really amazing and thank you!! I can't wait to see your art!
The advice and encouragement you share goes way beyond "how to be an artist". So glad I found you! ❤
Glad I found you too!
This is one of the best art Channel I have come across you have gained a new follower my friend! 🎉
God bless you, I'm struggling with enjoying the creative process/art right now. But this plan looks fun. ❤
I get it though, they were young and I probably would have fell into that too
I like that what u said: choose your medium which you don't necessarily like..not the easy one.! That's a good point! Value..thanks!
Thanks, it's true. Appreciate you having my back.
Thank you, brother.
That means a lot to me.
Fills me up with motivation.
Loved every minute of it 🎉
I love swing music lol haha thank bro u doing a great job thank u for the inspiration.
Thank you beaucoup! Much joy to you! 🕊
Hey my dude! Always nice to see one of your videos. I'm going to start implementing this plan for my comics I also saw the video the other day with you talking about comics as well which was really inspiring
I'm enjoying your videos. You have a lot to say.
Yeah I went to art school and everything this guy is saying is spot on.
Thanks!
Vaya Brother that’s what’s up! Thank you for this content and ur reality checks in this industry. It’s much needed and appreciated. Coincidental am going through a desire to try again but no drive to stick through it. Ur efforts in helping us get motivated has definitely sparked a flame in my drive. Gracias and keep pushing 💪🏼
Hello friend! I'm Hade Emvv. I'm 19 yrs old, drawing since 5. I never left drawing, but I never kept going on learning more, i was always just draw from imagination. I was singing in bands, making my own music. Now I decided what I want. So, you make me laugh and you're true makes it better! I wanted to say that I'm good with pens, inks. I can draw with almost anything that has ink! It doesn't have any turning back when i put it on paper and i think that makes me wanna draw more and be better, coz i can see my sketch and correct myself and then study this one. Thanks for reading!...
No problem, thanks for leaving a comment.
Thank you🙏🙏🙏❤🌹
I think developing your style and choosing your medium has to come first--how do you do a logo that shows who you are in a glance if you're just winging it?
Thanks, you brought back many memories - very informative.
2 minutes and you said the most important thing. Thank you for saying it.
Excellent roadmap!! And the logo bit was unexpected but so logical! As a graphic designer too I’ve always pushed other artists to get a logo together asap!
Thanks, I just think "logo" is so important in todays fast info society. People forget you fast...
Thanks!
This id amazing plan ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ i dont have a portfolio nor 12 pcs rhat are of my own painting style 😮wow this advice is so great 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I love the way you keep ish real. I can watch you all day! Thank you.😊
Trust me, I'm holding back. lol
Holy shit! Come work for me! That's what I preach. Okay, let me make some money first. 😄 thanks for the reassurance
OMG, i'm the first viewer in youtube video! This did not happen for 10 years
Sweet! That's never happened to me.
Maybe it's a sign... lol
I love your content dude its amazing, I am an artist myself and I love your take on art and how its you who comes up with your style and how not to change. I also like how you point out how LIBERAL business it is. its hard for conservatives like myself to be in this industry but I don't care I make my art and I happy. I also don't know si eres puerto ricano porque se nota, because us hispanics got that radar lol. Love your art bro!
You brought up something very interesting.
Mmmmmm. I can see how I can come across like a conservative. That's funny.
I love the comment, you get little aspects that you can't pick up because I actually make the videos. lol. I'm just being a human being on a rock flying through space, like everyone else.
Welcome! Glad my videos found you.
@@shadowartistelol but you didn’t really answer @joshuatirado7634 lol .. eres o no, porque yo también estoy sospechosa 😂
@joshuatirado7634 wepa hermano…adelante
You are insanely authentic. I and in my late 50s and was forced to leave the workforce in doing so I’ve always wanted to spend my ladder years and Art I love abstract art very difficult for beginner, but I’ve been watching you on your TH-cam channel and you are straight into the point with great advice, thank you for the four year plan I look forward to your classes thank you
Your welcome.
Thank you🙏❤️
thank you shadow artist for all your advice and continuing to influence and define I am a follower of your channels I will continue to follow you🙏👍👍👍👍👍🙏 really appreciate you being in the front line showing us how to break in the main stream love the dedication and how driven you are. it's very inspiring aka Dark Mazze here
Great advice ❤ I like your visual layout. Looking forward to your members area!
Show us your work.
I'm trying to help. What are you doing?
@ thanks
Being who she is might be the frowny, earthing girl with the hairy armpits. Dropping social rules that I have to smile, shave, be nice all the time, dress a certain way, look a certain way, etc., was life changing for me.
Best advice. I'm sitting in front row taking your advice. ❤
You are gorgeous! I love this guy !If I had this guy 40 years ago, I would be as famous as this dude is going to be.Luckly I am a self employed pet groomer,my 2nd love.Art is now an important "hobby",but I am happy. This guy tells you what to do-NO CHARGE! Listen people! He is not pussy footing around!Blessings to you Walt,You will be painting those workboots soon(and selling the paintings!)
Hey! You sound like me. So happy you found the channel. Never to late, brother
This is a wealth of information. Thank you so much! 🌹👩🏼🎨🖌️🎨
You are amazing brother. thank you ❤
I just found you, thanks TH-cam algorithm, and LOVE this!
Story #3 kicked me right in the feels ❤
Thank for admitting that, it hit me too
Great topic and advice ! Thank you. As far as clubs go,,,never liked them it’s a herd mentality. I think for myself.
Ohhh!!?. Stay tuned, it's coming... 😆
@shadowartiste excellent!😁
Oooooh I felt that deep in my soul!!! Thank you ❤
I like this bro you got swag
Thank you, no one ever said that to me before. Lol, thanks bro
Hi I like your energy lol you are down to earth you let the f bomb out lol lol 😮😂
Thanks. You gotta just be yourself nowadays.
Excellent explanation of a step by step intro into an Art education to career ! I’m great full for your generous gift sir 😊!
This is so refreshing and so dope
You had me rollin the whole video. Good video. Love it. 🔥 🔥🔥🔥
Sounds like logical, sound advice. I appreciate you.
Glad to help

Bro, you look like me, and I look like you. Bet you're a blast to hang out with.
Great video, great talk. Thanks man. I'm in Pennsylvania, USA, hmu if your ever down here. Much love.
Wow this was gold. Thank you
Brilliant! Thank you!
Good talk! I hope students would truly do this instead of realising it years later after going through as you put it, year 1-4, but without having done anything lol
Thank you, except maybe get really high. 😂
Real dude, following!
Thank You for the Spark Brother.
Brilliant and so simple. 😊
This is awesome 😂
Fantastic this. Thanks❤
gotta say a lot of what you are saying is accurate but I also think what you're trying to get accross is a pretty heavy lift for younger folks.
👏👏👏👏
Sketchbook for drawing + a big spiral bound lined notebook, rip images out of magazines, write notes from art videos, book recommendations, whatever interests you, write it down. Print it out Glue it in there. Its an inspiration book you can look at to inform you when you are ready to make a piece of art. You will see common themes in the stuff you are drawn to.
Great advice!
