    Really good interview, I'm already thinking those panels are going to save me from doing a lot of framing when I build my shed. My dad built a shanty boat and he installed doors that came off of a motor home and they had built in screen doors with them, simple install, front and back, gave him easy access to the motor and fuel tanks, plus it let in a lot of breeze and gave a good view of what's happening behind him and in front...

    Awesome interview and the boat is looking great. I pulled my hair out trying to figure out where to put the doors and windows. Here's my 2 cents. I went with a patio door on the front because it's all glass and no blind spots plus it doesn't take up any space. A back door is a must if you are going out solo for docking or if there is a problem with the motor. With a four stroke you won't be able to hear it running and if for some reason it overheats you will need to see if it's pumping water. I use my back door a lot every trip.

    On the rear of his boat I would use a sliding closet type door (Pocket door) and put it on the outside of the wall so the rain will run onto the outside deck and not inside. You still have rear access and don't need door swing area. He could even make a door from the panels.

    great Job, couple suggestions from someone who has extensive experience using IMPs Insulated Metal panels which are similar in design to your panels...except they come with the ability to use hidden fasteners and they have hidden caulking gaskets so complete seal on walls and roofs When trimming an opening with your C Channels, extend the header pieces past the jamb pieces and jamb pieces past the header, then forty five degree gut the outer and inner corners ...it looks much better. You can pipe Tape caulking and put it along all seams and peel off tape when you butt panels together...and finally make sure when you are using external screws, always mark out the screws, ie measure spacing so you have straight screw lines especially on corner and window'door flashings. These little tricks cost little in time and make for a perfect finish and seal.l I would also put intermediate supports staggered in your roof between all the girts. Great job for first build I would also have chosen Casement Windows as it allows the window to catch the wind and channel it inside when docked. Flat windows give little ventilation unless wind is blowing on that elevation.

That keads to a thought if he firs out the interior for siding that creates a air pocket which invites an area for trapping moisture another solution maybe to just apply fiberglass sheet panels low cost low weight an on and on thanks fir a very interesting post.

  • @53Peterbilt
    @53Peterbilt 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    First off...Great episode!!
    And as for Forrest, I love your build!!
    Couple things...
    I like simple, and I LOVE these foam panels you're using! I'd sure Love to find a source for these out here on the Oregon coast.
    My 24' pontoon build is nearly identical, except my cabin is 14' long.
    I would always recommend installing a back door, as you'll want easy access back there for handling dock lines, for when someone wants to get on the roof (you don't want your guests climbing through a window, do ya?), and of course in case of an engine issue, switching gas tanks, or some sort of emergency. Definitely put a back door on there! You'll use it more than you realize.
    For heat, yeah, a Buddy heater should work just fine, but have you considered the addition of a small woodstove??
    I Love having a small woodstove on my boat, as it gives such nice dry heat, you can source firewood anytime you're ashore, and there's nothing yummier than sitting next to a fire with a cup of coffee or tea on a cold rainy day.
    My helm is in the same starboard location as yours, but I have my entry door swing out to the port side, so it's out of the way of my visibility when I'm at the helm, and it lays flat against the front of my house. It also has a window so it really doesn't block my passenger's view from the port side. (probably too late to modify yours)
    I'm a big advocate (if you have any plans for a bathroom) of using compost or incinerator toilets. They're so easy to use, and there's no nasty black tanks to install or pump out. (this wasn't addressed on the video)
    A home built one works just fine, doesn't cost hardly nuthing, and it's not like it's used all that much anyway to justify the expense...but if you'll have women aboard, they're sure nice to have!
    One last thing is to do a preliminary sealing of your roof panel seams before rolling your roof coating on.
    Awesome build Forrest!! I really hope Brenton does a follow-up video once you have her on the water! 👍
    btw...the half-doors you're talking about are Dutch-doors. French doors have lots of small windows in 'em. 😊

    In the home building business the panels are called SIP (structural insulated panel) They are very strong and he has used them the correct way. If he used spray foam to seal around the window opening there is really no need to install an inner wood frame. Using the wood inner frame for the doors is a must. I built my home with SIP panels 40 years ago and they are still in perfect shape. Good luck to you on this wonderful boat.

    I just bought my permanent retirement property on Lake Cumberland. It’s has a Barndominium with a huge shop. My first project is to build a Shanty boat in the shop. Moving down full time in May. I plan to have my Shanty boat built this summer, test run on Lake Cumberland till November. Then trailer it back up to my home town in Indiana. My buddy has a Marina where I can leave the trailer. Then head down the Ohio to the Mississippi. Then to the Atchafalaya river for the winter. I have a friend with a fish camp in Pierre Part on the Belle River. I can park there and get into town easily. I found a 32ft Aluminum barge style hull. The cabin was removed. Clean slate. Corbin is not far from my property south of Nancy KY. These panels would work great and save me a lot of build time. I love the idea of a flat roof. I have used mobile home roof coating in Florida, perfect to seal the roof panels. It’s light blue or white and perfect to reflecting the sun. Thanks for the ideas. I will look into these panels. Thanks 🇺🇸⚓️

Also for storage, look into getting inspiration from the "Freedom Rail" Garage - Adjustable Storage. There is a lot of wall space he could hang things from even woven nylon string hammock type bags. You could pay a small fortune for storage hammocks from a marine supply place. Could you explain to us the hurdles that we will have to go through when we register a shanty that we build from scratch. I asked coast guard about registering it and it’s a bit complicated. I understand it will have to be registered and covered by insurance to be legal on the water. Also to park it in a marina it may need an inspection of some type as required for insurance? What are your thoughts?

    • @backwatersandbackroads
      @backwatersandbackroads  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Howdy, all good questions. I can tell you my experiences with a great many boats. If you build a shanty from a pontoon, if the pontoon has a title, you're fine. Putting a cabin on it won't change anything. If you use an already existing hull...same deal. Of you build your own hull, I think you'll have to get a hull # for it. That depends on where you live. As far as insurance, that's for others to answer ;) overall: you will be fine however you go about it.

    • @backwatersandbackroads

      @CatchLastCast I've seen some good older ones for sure. The thing to look for, siS of toons and quality of aluminum. A deck can be redone pretty easy. All the fancy furniture will probably go away. The tracker brand back in the day really made tough pontoon boats.

      @libertyforamericanow I hear the reasoning. I've wondered that also, but I do know the manufacturers do go with larger center toons, partially to get up on plain with higher HP. My guess is 3 inches will still settle into the water. We'll find out ;)
