- Button for button, the G-Shock GW-9500 and the ProTrek PRW-3500 do the EXACT SAME THING.

WHAT I FORGOT TO MENTION:
The PRW-3500 is kind of top heavy. When I hiked with it, I could feel it flopping around.
The wings on the PRW-3500 grab hairs really bad.
It would be MUCH better on a Nato strap.

The steel pointer pen I use is the Zebra F-701, which costs a bit more than a typical pen but it's money well spent in my opinion. It won't break and you can buy replacement ink cartridges. Just don't lose it!

Great comparison! I just wanted to add that there is also a 3rd use of the duplex LCD, which is the climb record mode (started by holding the Alti button for 5 seconds in altimeter mode). That way, the duplex LCD will act as a time monitor, shown in every mode while climb recording is active.
No way! I never new that. I’m going to try that when I get home.
As a long time Casio fan I own a ProTrek for now over 30 years - it's working like the first day.
Putting an old module in a new case is even for me (remember FAN) to much!
You are working in an oilfield, so you are one of the very few humans who can have an advantage, but 99,9% will be happy with the cheaper ProTrek.
Thank you for this very interesting comparison!
You’re right. The Mudman is overkill for most. The ProTrek is a great value for the outdoorsman. Thanks again for watching!
@@JimKinkade I want to say: thank you for your reviews - they are from a user perspective, not a advertisement!!!
Greetings from Europe (Austria)
I absolutely agree !
I got my hands on a PRW-35-1a, .similar with the PRW-3500, the bezel is not so busy.I have it a few days now and I love it. The most intensive stuff I do is camping and some maintenance on my car. I like the look of the GW-9500, but the legibility won me over. You videos were very helpfull, but I wanted to see them. live, before making a decision. Since I was looking for a very legible watch ( poor eyesight with age. ), no BT, solar, multiband 6, either is an excelent choice. Thank you.
I have the prw-30. Is the same module…
The PRW-35 looks really cool but they don’t sell it in the USA.
I just bought the Pro Trek 3510y for only $189 at a police tactical store . I've had 3 mudmaster and I find them too heavy and bulky but the 3510y with the dark face and green strap perfect for weight and comfort . Basically a do everything trail hiking watch .
Yes! That green 3510 looks awesome.
Same old Module for one reason....Reliability! Casio wanted a fail proof watch with this Mudman. And it so happens that this old Module is bulletproof.
True! But I wouldn't have used the duplex screen. I think that's the main reason we can't see it well!
@JimKinkade I honestly don't have a problem with mine, and not because it's from Japan, they are all the same, just the letters that follow the the model #.In any case I find that the benefit of the duplex display outweighs the the reflection that you find on the screen. As they say nothing is perfect.
@@mf6532 Yup, you take the good with the bad. I really like the Mudman and its module.
I have the protrek 3510 for few years now, its working pretty well.
That one has a negative LCD, right?
@@JimKinkade it does :) Mine should arrive tomorrow! :D
Between these 3, I would definitely go for the protrek.
The 3500 is still really popular and for good reason.
Casio should better utilize the duplex display - it would be cool to animate the seconds. Great review!
True! If it’s going to be there use it for more things!
I replaced the 3500 strap with a NATO nylon strap. The original strap never felt good on my wrist.
I’m about to do the same. The factory strap isn’t as good as the watch.
I just ordered the titanium version of the protrek. Overnighted it on amazon. I hope its going to be a watch i will wear for a long time. But then again, ive said that about each of my 50 casios i have up on display right now.
How’s the watch? Did you get it yet?
I ordered the prg3400 japanese with metal bezel and multiband six and tough solar. It looks great over the new mudman. First i would buy the gw 9500 but i imported the prg protrek 3400 from japan to germany for a better price then the mudman. In my opinion the pro trek is in hapanese version a great watch and kill the new mudman overall. Greatings from germany
Way to go to save some money!
Good video mate all the best from Glasgow 🇬🇧
Thanks for watching, sir!
I'm getting the 3500 this week. I've wanted that damn thing forever as my ultimate shtf watch, primarily for the barometric pressure reading (however accurate that is). I'm a diehard eco drive man, but I've had several protreks because I love the solar option. But the Casio offers so much that I can't pass it up. Thanks for the video. u are a true Protrekker! Or Protrekkie??
Casio made a mistake by making the 3500 too good! Switch the strap to a nato and it will last through the apocalypse.
@@JimKinkade I love it! I'm not too sher about the nato band but I'll think about it. Thanks
3510 is an upgrade over 3500. Supposedly.
The 3500 is an aniversary edition that's why
I didn’t know that!
The PRG 80T pro trek from 2005 had the same dual display with the same purple layer, also it suffered from crisp legibility issue, I believe Casio reused that same unit as it’s identical, I know as I owned that watch for 17 years it was my daily driver, and the battery lasted 15 years! I would do a comparison but it’s dead now ps I would choose the pro trek one 🎉
The dual lcd is kind of a gimmick. I like the dots on the perimeter for the compass. Especially if it keeps the whole display clearer.
for pro trek fans... you can come with some strap suggestions. Color / material / where to buy...
I’ve bought some NATO straps from Bertucci watches. They have a whole separate website just for straps. I have Tridura straps from them that are virtually indestructible. ultimatefieldwatch.com
Hi Jim or anyone else reading, I’m 50+ with not great eyesight, which digital protrek model would you say has the largest easiest display to read, I’m struggling with g shock displays at the moment, thanks, Ady
Look at the Casio AE-1500. It’s only $22. Big huge numbers.

Protrek is a higher tier line compared to G-Shock, they have more functionality and are more expensive, and contrary to what you think they mostly have 200 M water resistance. I know you like this watches but, your information is more wrong than it is right.
The only ProTrek model with 200 M water resistance on the Casio website is the PRW3500. Every other one has 100 M. The prices range from $200 to $510.
All G-Shocks have 200 M water resistance. Their prices go up to $5000.
@@JimKinkadeBoth lines have models going above $1,000; however, all you have to do is look at the starting price. You can find a number of G-Shocks that start at $50 or so, good ones. The absolute cheapest Protrek is about $150, and that's when they're on sale. The normal starting price is $200. Looking at a base model without anything extra, Protreks come with far superior technology. Are there G-Shocks that can accomplish the same? Yes, but they are much higher-tier models compared to the G-Shock starting line.
@@JimKinkadeAs far as Casio's basic pricing strategy goes, it's something like this: G-Shock offers more affordable options, while Protrek tends to start at a higher price point. Additionally, Protrek watches are often considered more technologically advanced and offer superior features compared to entry-level G-Shock models. However, G-Shock does offer higher-tier models that can match some of the features found in Protrek watches, albeit at a higher price point. Then there are special Enthusiast models; for those particular ones, G-Shock prices go through the roof, mostly due to the fact that they have a fan following larger than most other watches in the world.
@@vik574 True, ProTrek ranks above the entry level G-Shocks.
