Cutting Down A 60 Year Old Apple Tree

The Homeowner asked me to cut down this old apple tree because it's hollow inside. One of the thicker branches broken off decades ago.
The tree couldn't close the wound and bacteria and fungi began to grow.
And slowly over the years these fungi hollowed out the tree.
That's why I cut it down in smaller pieces and not in one. It takes more time but it's also the safer way because the tree was standing close to the house.

Something like this should be better done by experts.
If you had left the helmet off it would have been perfect - not.
Fortunately nothing happened.

Totally agree with you. You should always contact an expert when it comes to tree cutting and I definetly don't call myself an expert in cutting a tree down.
Anyways since I have cut down one or the other tree in the last years I gained a little bit of knowledge and that's why I felt confident to cut down that old tree.
I mean you could have skip the part with the helmet I find that a bit unnecessary. But that's your opinion and that's fine.

How do you know it’s age?

The homeowner told me that her father planted this tree in the 1960s. Since the tree is hollow I couldn't count the agerings of the tree 😁
