I grew up in Guyana and Cricket was and is our national pastime. It is often said that all West Indians are born with a bat in one hand and a ball in the other. Cricket is in our blood. I now live in the US and I can certainly understand why so many Americans love baseball. Don't get me wrong, and I may still be prejudiced in my opinion thst cricket is the greatest game ever developed by man, but truth be told come every country has its own national pastime and people can be just as fanatic about it as those of us cricket fanatics are about Cricket. Whst other bloody game last for 5 days and yes, could have an exciting draw...while breaking for lunch and tea? The 7th inning stretch can't even come close to that. lol.

I love test matches; the ebbs and flows of the game. A few years ago the Ashes series was taking place in the UK. One evening I went to a wedding reception. When I left my house, England were winning. When I got to the reception someone told me Australia were now winning. An hour later someone arrived and announced England were back in control. Can't beat a good test match.

In cricket, every team has a right to become world champions, just like in football, oh, I mean soccer!

I think after Chess, cricket is the game where you use your brain a lot. In cricket, your one wrong decision can cost you the game. After every ball/pitching, strategy changes continuously. That is why in Cricket, captain plays a very vital role as he is the one who takes every decision and if anything goes wrong, he is always in the receiving end. So in cricket, your captain has to be the best strategist to take bold and clever decisions and brave enough to face the wrath of fans and media if team loses the match .

    • @davidberry7115
      @davidberry7115 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Sadly, in the US, people that like to play chess are bullied by big wannabe American football athletes, which we know as jocks here in the US. Shows that many people in the US don't care about learning, which I hate, because I love to learn new things.

You didn't mention the most prestigious form of cricket; Test Cricket. International only. A test match is played for a maximum of 5 days. Usually there are 3 test matches in a test series, sometimes there are 2 or 4 matches in one series. There are 5 matches every time Australia play England, which is called The Ashes, and that's the biggest test series in world cricket.
In one test match, Both teams generally bat & bowl twice in one match (4 innings, 2 batting innings & 2 bowling innings for each team).
Let's say Team 1 reaches 300 runs & they have been bowled out (Team 1 loses all 10 wickets), OR the captain of team 1 declares (basically when the captain thinks his team has made enough runs, and also to make sure there is enough time for the remainder of the innings so there isn't a draw), Team 2 bats. Now we'll say Team 2 makes 320 runs and they are bowled out, Team 1 resumes batting, behind by 20 runs to take back the lead & extend it as much as possible. Team 1 makes 350 which gives them a lead of 330 runs. Team 2 bats but are either all bowled out OR they can't reach 331 runs before the end of the allotted time (end of day 5) they lose and Team 1 takes the victory. If Team 2 couldn't actually take the lead in their first batting innings, Team 1captain can decide to bat again, or enforce the Follow On, which makes Team 2 have to bat immediately after they just batted, and Team 1 resumes bowling again.
After one test match is played, both teams have roughly a 1 week break, and then go on to playing the next test match. In cricket, the test arena is the fiercest, hardest & most prestigious format to play.
Every cricketer dreams of playing test cricket. But there is the other side of that coin, the cricketers who play for $$$$$$$. The players who play for money are those who only really play T20 cricket. (20 overs each to bat & bowl once over.) For Australia, India & England, playing regular test cricket is the most wealthiest format. In Australia, 20(?) players sign a contract with Australia's cricketing board. I think every contract lasts 3-4 years. The minimum contract is $750,000 per year for new players, and the max contract is $1.5 million for Australia's best performers (Bonus for the captain.) India are the richest cricketers, as you can guess. Any player can play Test cricket, contract or not, and those who are contracted, are NOT guaranteed to play Tests. Currently right now (Jan 2017), half of Australia playing team don't have international contracts, and some contracted players haven't played Ted's. Cricket for 3-5 years. Yeah, I know that's confusing.

    • @AzWazzZa
      @AzWazzZa 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Also, for some players, they earn more money from sponsorships/advertisement/endorsement deals. Virat Kohli, Indian captain and cricket superstar earns around $40 million US per year. Including Indian contract, his millions of paying sponsors, and I mean millions. He has A LOT of endorsements from billion dollar companies.

Even if you run well, your partner too have run same like you, and even both of you are running good, you have to keep an eye on the ball and the fielders to know how much time do you have to get how many runs and you'll have to return safe and your partner have to return safe at the same time and even if all that is done, it is to be assured that while running so strenuously and furiously you must enter the white lines properly at both sides

For those saying LBW rule is hard to explain. Well, I think it is easy. There was one commercial in India during world cup where each player is asked to explain rule. Sehwag is asked the LBW rule and he says in hindi poem line "Ball wicket pe aai jo apna dharam nibhaye. Balla tere hath me kahe taang adaye" whose english translation is "Ball which comes towards wicket is performing its duty. You have bat in your hand and why do you use your Leg(to hit ball)?". I think this simple line explains LBW rule as it helped me understand the LBW rule.

Cricket - You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

As someone who watches Cricket and Baseball (which was copied from Cricket) I must tell you that both are enjoyable in their own respects.
Cricket is definitely baseball on steroids with the newer formats - T20 (20 overs per side instead of usual 50) and even the 50 over ODI (one day international).
Cricket Test Matches, a 5 day affair, are also an investment and fun - 5 days still can be boring esp with no result at the end at times.
Baseball rules like strike zone are very arbitrary and up for interpretation by umpires which adds the human element. Cricket has that too with wides and leg before wickets (which now can be challenged a few times (usually 3) per side and this involves replays for more accuracy in the game removing the human element).
Baseball is fun but cricket is really exciting when you understand the sport.
Next we need soccer vs football - I used to feel football (American one) is senseless and stupid till I understood the rules and games and followed along a year or two and now it is super exciting. IMO, Football = Cricket and Soccer = Baseball (fun at times but many times just boring)

Funny how this video starts with 'how confusing' cricket is but yet he doesn't cover the LBW rule or 'Leg Before Wicket'.... Really that is the most difficult part of the game, but essentially it was created to stop players blocking the ball from hitting the stumps intentionally. So if the umpire deems that the ball would of hit the stumps had they not prevented it with their leg then he can rule them as out.....
I would be more exciting if they got rid of the LBW law and their pads then lets see how many are brave enough to block the ball with their legs :)

There are also a few other provisos but they are very technical so pretty much the above description is good enough to have a basic understanding.

The ball must hit the batsmen on the pads or foot or body to be an lbw and the batsman hasn't hit the ball with he's or her bat first the batsman can be called lbw off the glove as long as the glove isn't touching the bat. Anything pitched outside the leg stump can not be out the ball must be pitched in line with the stumps and going on to hit the stumps then it's out if it's missing or jumping over the stumps then it's not out if it pitchers outside the off stump and hit him in line then it's out. the umpire make the call he raise his index finger for out or says no not out. If the umpire said out the batsman can use drs to reverse the call then they go to the third umpire if it's umpires call it's out if the umpire said not out the fielding team can use drs to turn it in to a wicket if it's umpires call it remains not out but if the third umpire overturned the call then the umpire on the field raises he's finger and the batsman is out. Umpires call is what the umpire gave it in the first place he gave it not out and its umpires call it's not out but if he gave it out in the first place and it's umpires call it's gonna be out.

The glove is only considered as the bat as long as the glove is touching the bat if it is not touching the bat then it's a lbw can't be caught out its the rule.

The bowlers swing, spin, york you at your feet. And fielders are placed differently for each bowler, depending on the style of their bowling to make it difficult for the batsmen to get runs. So the batsmen have to use their techniques and skills play shots and get the ball between fielding gaps and run between wickets to score. It's not easy to score 6's and 4's like it looks on TV, the bowlers bowl in 140+ kmph with swing or spin it using variations.

There’s not really a similar sport to compare Cricket to. Baseball sure, but that’s really just the bat and ball, everything else is so different.
There are so many rules and gameplay elements that ONLY happen in Cricket and no other sport has similar rules, I don’t get why Indians/Aussies/English can’t understand why Americans have a hard time grasping Cricket. They always say “well baseball and American football are even more confusing”, and it’s like no shit, you’ve never seen or played it before.

    Around 1 Min it's wrong.
The length of grass is called the wicket. The two sets of "Sticks" are stumps. Therefore the stumps are the bowlers' target and the bales must fall for the batsman to have a chance to be declared out.
    Around 3 min.
After each ball the batsmen can run but do not have to e.g. if the ball runs along to a fielder or goes to boundary or is caught without nick and declared dead by wiki.
    Around 4 min.
It can also end if one team retires. This is usually done in test matches to preserve energy for future innings and can be called when the captain of the batting side feels they have done well enough to not be overtaken by the opponent's next innings of batting.

Man i love cricket but that was the most complicated explanation of cricket ever, you could have explained it in much much simpler terms referencing baseball and animations but then i guess the title wouldn't have worked.
Like baseball fielding team and a batting team
Like baseball you hit the ball and start running so you can score.
Like baseball hit it out of the park you dont have to run you get automatic score
Like baseball If someone in the field catches your hit your out
Like baseball when you hit the ball and start running if the ball is thrown to where your running before you get there you out.
In baseball if the pitcher skillfully throws the ball accurately behind the batsmen 3 times or 3 strikes he's out - in cricket if the pitcher or bowler skillfully throws the ball and if it hits the wooden wicket or bails your out.
Like baseball the goal is for the fielding team to keep the other teams score low, get them all out, and get into bat and beat their score.
The biggest difference is that cricket is played on an international stage where various countries vie to be crowned world champions. Baseball is only played at a national level. Thing i find amusing is how in baseball they call themselves the world champions yet its only an intra national competition

The reason behind the name "World Series" is thanks to Barney Dreyfuss who was the owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1903, he wrote to the owner of the Boston Red Sox challenging them to a ‘World’s Championship Series’. The Pirates were the best team in the National League and the Red Sox were the best in the American League.
Over time, the 'World’s Championship Series' name has been shortened to the World Series and has been played every year apart from 1904 and 1994.

    LBW works like this:
Batter has to defend their wickets, and they are supposed to use their bat to do so, but some batters once upon a time decided to use their legs instead, so the LBW rule was invented to stop them. If the ball hits the batter in any part of their body other than the bat or hands, they it can be given out provided the following conditions are met:
    1. The ball would have hit the stumps if their body hadn't stopped it
    2. The ball didn't touch the bat or a hand touching the bat
    3. The ball didn't bounce on the ground outside the line of the stump opposite that of the batter's stance. example, a right handed batter stands in front of the stumps with their bat on the left side of their body (from the perspective of the bowler) and their backside on the right. If you draw one thick imaginary line between both sets of stumps (as wide as the stumps) on either end of the pitch, and the ball bounced to the right of this line (from the perspective of the bowler for a right handed batter) then even if it would have hit the stumps it's not out.
Even if the batter was holding the bat behind their leg, and if their leg wasn't there it would have hit the bat instead, it can still be given out LBW because it hit the leg first. Even if it just clips the bat and would have still hit the stumps (if it hadn't hit their leg as well) it's not out because it hit the bat.
The hardest part to explain is why.

    LBW.
In Baseball, there is a small strike zone - over the plate, between shoulder and knee. In cricket, the strikezone is the wickets. The cricket batsman is only allowed to protect that strike zone with the bat - nothing else, just the bat. If the ball hits the batsman's leg, and the umpire declares that had the leg not been in the way, that the ball would have continued on and hit the wickets ... then the batsman is called out, as if the ball had hit the wicket. This is termed "Leg Before Wicket" or LBW.
LBW calls can be quite contentions as the condition of the ball, the condition of the ground and the amount of spin on the ball can all change the direction of the ball, making it difficult to judge if the ball would have hit the wickets or not. In modern times, cameras are used to assist umpiring decisions. Traditionally, however, cricket is a game for gentlemen, and the umpire's decision is accepted without argument. Compare this to football (soccer) where getting up in the face of the umpire happens more times per match that goals are scored.

  • @stuartkeating6508
    @stuartkeating6508 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You forgot lbw (leg before wicket). That's when the ball strikes the batsmen himself, but if the ball, when continued its trajectory when on to hit the wickets, then the batsmen is out. And you also forgot to mention no ball (if the bowler steps over the line when bowling). Those were two more fundamental things that you needed to know.
