  • Marta Karolyi's last competition as head coach of the U.S. gymnastics team was the 2016 Olympic Games. Since then, everything at USA Gymnastics (USAG) has changed. The biggest sexual abuse scandal in sports history was uncovered and leadership at USAG turned over multiple times. What do the coaches of U.S. World Champions think about the cultural reshaping within USA Gymnastics?
The special guests this episode are Cleo Washington, co-coach of 2017 all-around World Champion Morgan Hurd; Sarah Korngold, current coach of team World Champion Shilese Jones; and Owen Field, coach of team World Champion Leanne Wong and also associate head coach at Florida University.
Club Gym Nerd members have a mini bonus episode from this interview to enjoy.
    They discuss:
Why Sarah and Owen decided to answer questions on social media
Their first experiences with USAG camps from dev to national team
The positive experiences they've had at national team camps
The changes they've seen over the years and the struggles to gain consensus amongst so many voices
How Owen and Leanne Wong navigated the last minute substitution and begin in a confusing vault final reserve situation at Antwerp Worlds in 2023
What surprised them during their first international assignments
Injury management and prevention in club, college and under USAG

The way they talked about Qiu's coach in the video was so rude, they didn't even figure out who they are. Qiu comes on in the second half, while Huang and Jones play in the first half. And guess what? It was actually Huang's coach not Qiu's! This could easily lead to misunderstandings and rumors. This incident shows how there's been long-term discrimination against the Chinese team; they can't even tell the difference between Chinese athletes and their coaches, always China1, China2, China3.

Their faces when they looked at each other realizing,"wow! all 3 of us coached world champions!" love this and their support for each other--Cleo talking about her athletes being great communicators and they all reminded her that she fostered that environment. humility and grace from all 3. love them

Sarah is a smart coach to me and 100% outsmarts the gymternet. Shilese was the first to ditch the L-hop 1/1, while the rest + insane domestic judges are still embracing those self D&E-destroying elements when they compete at bigger international meets. No disappointment in this interview.

WOW. This was so awesome. I am going to watch this again from beginning to end again. Two things that really resonated with me as a former gymnast (and it was a long time ago) was the discussion about a coach sitting down- I was laughing so hard- no one EVER sat down in my gym (this has been a part of my working life to this day- it has been a thing for me- I am a land survey party chief- and you better be on your feet). I remember a new transfer gymnast taking a seat in the middle of workout and it was like time stood still for the rest of us She never did that again!🤣 Also, my gym was totally unusual in that we all spotted each other. (speaking to Jessica and spotting) What a gift! Our coach was an amazing spotter (I am talking about a coach that had Olympians in the gym) but we learned to spot each other on the more secure skills. We would go to meets and set each others bars and stand there for dismounts. It was SO different from other teams! There was one meet where coaches were pulled away for some reason in warm ups amd we just carried on without issue because we were so adept at spotting each other. That was an excellent way to build confidence for both the gymnasts performing skills and those gymnasts that would engage in coaching in the future. We also had to move mats and equipment in the gym regularly. We really had very few injuries in my gym. Once coach wasn't spotting and a teammate was it meant you HAD it! Another different thing is that we all wore t-shirts in training - specifically for spotting. I imagine that has changed with my coach over the years. I have moved SO much furniture in my life with BOSS skills with my 5'5" 115 lb. body from that training! This interview was GOLDEN. Thank you all!

This was an amazing interview or even discussion panel might be a better thing to call it. I love Sarah. I'm also a rule follower who will be quick to say the rules are stupid but I'll follow them. I try to go into things having an understanding that there is a reason for something even if I don't know what the reason is. I love the relationship that all three of them have with one another. I learned some things that surprised me. I had wondered how they all make it through the really quick warm-ups before each event. To realize that not all of the athletes and coaches know how to do it before big assignments is very interesting. And the fact that they use public transportation when they're on international assignments also astounds me. I had assumed that team USA would rent a shuttle so they can create your own schedule.

@@Bxyxox Oh did you also mix up Lu Le (Huang's coach) and Liu (Qiu's coach) as well?
If you watched the game, Huang and her coach Lu Le and her teammate Wu Ran were preparing the bars for her, in same warm-up session as Jones since she also competed in the 1st half. They had every right to be there.
By neglecting Huang Zhuofan and mistook Lu for Liu, the two coaches just successfully misled the audiences and offended 2 athletes and 2 coaches at the same time. This is annoying.
