I grew up an atheist and never read his books as a child. I discovered them in my 20s after my conversion due to meeting a Christian at university. I read many of his books and they had a huge impact on me. There have some hard times in my life where I have struggled to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and in those times I often find myself rereading the Narnia Chronicles. They are very simple and easy to read, yet there is something very profound about them that brings light and hope in the dark times.
My first exposure to Narnia was a gift from my uncle of the Focus on the Family Radio Theatre adaptation of the Narnia series, I'm blind so I can't read print, but the Focus on the Family adaptation, which is hosted by the stepson of C.S. Lewis really submerged me into the wonderful world of Narnia.
"It isn't Narnia, you know," sobbed Lucy. "It's you. We shan't meet you there. And how can we live, never meeting you?" "But you shall meet me, dear one," said Aslan. "Are - are you there too, Sir?" said Edmund. "I am," said Aslan. "But there I have another name. You must learn to know me by that name. This was the very reason why you were brought to Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there." - Voyage of the Dawn Treader
We did have that wardrobe, and one day I sat inside it and felt the coats. I was about 8 or 9. I felt behind to see if there was Narnia. There wasn't, but it was nice to imagine it, I never grew out of being young and loving books.
