    VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
In this video we explore the relationship of seeing to draw and drawing to see. In art and drawing we often focus mainly on the importance of close observation in drawing, but lets look at how drawing also impacts the way we see.

There are some points in a drawing where the drawing comes to you before you come to it. You have to be willing to explore to get there.

Thank you. An important reminder to go with the inspiration of a subject and interpret that. Shape vs. line is a constant balancing game for me.

I really think you struck a chord on this one about why I enjoy art. On one level it allows me to express myself but on the deeper level, it allows me to appreciate all aspects of life more. My artistic ability is directly correlated with how I read books: now that I understand “how to see” I can create images in my head of the words that an author is writing down. When I cook a recipe, I see color, texture, contour, and space in the dish.
Excited for your new book! Day one buy for me my guy.

4 years ago I decided that I would get back on drawing for good. Your channel was the tip of my spear. I have learned SO MUCH about drawing because of you, and now I can say that my drawings are on a proficient level.
When I start to make some money by myself the first thing I'll do is buy your book to support you. Thank you so much for everything!!

Thanks, Alphonso. Observation is a very important skill in many things, especially art. It's amazing what you see when you take time to look.

Hello Alphonso. I was wondering if you’d do a pen and ink composition video. I’m not referring to the typical composition that is taught but of the composition of light vs far as it relates to ink. I recall reading about the subject many years ago but I can’t seem to find anything online or in books that discusses it. I recall some general rules of something like 70% of the picture being dark or shadow and 30% light and vice versa. I also recall the subject including the use of pure blacks. It was all in an effort to create a visually appealing of light and dark composition. I’d also love to learn more about the use of watercolor splashes with pen and ink drawings that still leaving the drawing as the primary focus and only uses color as an enhancement. Thanks

I often feel that a few lines almost trick the brain into seeing what the artist wants us to see. It is as if a good artist is also a magician of sorts. I have never considered drawing as a means of seeing more clearly. Just as a magician is well suited to seeing through another magician's trick.
    Thank you for this!

The hardest part about learning how to draw, for me, was understanding that there's a mindset you have to acquire and it simply takes time.
The best comparison I was told that made me understand what I was looking for, is the mindset you enter when you drive. I never even thought about the fact that I enter a different mindset when I drive, because it just slowly developed over time, but here's another part to that: YOU NEED A ROUTINE TO ENTER THE MINDSET, and this is built into the process required to start driving. You grab your wallet and keys, put on shoes, get into your car, start it, ensure everything (well, honestly, a few things) look good, throw it into gear and by the time you exit your neighborhood or first intersection, you're likely in the mindset, you start seeing the road and cars differently, without consciously making a change you view the world around you differently.
You need a routine like this for art, and that's good because you should stretch your hands for anything that requires dexterity, and the stretches are all the same whether it's guitar or piano, sketching or painting, so incorporating stretches and warm-ups locking your wrist and elbow and drawing shapes with your shoulder with proper posture, just using a pencil and some notebook/printer paper, will greatly improve your results.
