I have a 261 with a 20in bar and absolutely love it. Everything West Coast Saw on it. Gordy thinks the exhaust port and filter gives it at most 10-15% more power. Mainly from getting rid of the air filter baffles. Which I can believe it… A buddy of mine has a 362 and we think my 261 cuts just as fast while being 2 pounds lighter. He also bought a 500i instead of a 462 which made me mad. Because I wanted a 500i. So I bought and still am waiting for a Ripsaw 500i. Just to 1 up him for all eternity.
I love the MS311 but I went husky for my big saw with the 592xp and it's an absolute beast.

Bending down to cut is a good way to hurt yourself. I don’t use less than a 25 inch.
I have a 251 and never touch it. Not a big fan.

Gotta change out the sprocket on the 661 I have a 066 magnum with a 32" bar and it's pretty quick. Just putting that out there. Great video thanks.

Bark box makes big difference add a west coast oil filter green weenies. And it's a new saw night and day .on any of those saws all 3 except same modifications

I can't remember who did it, but I saw a video of a stock 500i compared to one with a bark box. The stock saw cut faster.
Good stuff Brock. I have 4 saws, don't laugh I use a 170 for smaller stuff and carry it on the 4 wheeler. 028 super with 18 inch bar for my go to saw. And a 362 with a 25 inch bar for the big stuff. 180 as a back up but I don't care for it much, doesn't run as well as the 170?

I don’t give anyone a hard time for what kind of equipment they use. Whatever gets the job done for you is the best
I was going to buy a 170 for limbing and ended up getting the 194 top handle saw instead. Same cc Engine but smaller saw

Not all that good of a comparison should have used the same bar and chain for all. It’s been proven that some stock chains aren’t that sharp. But the bark box says 6 to 10% power gain.
I'll take your other saws if your going to just use the 500 🤪

I think the biggest issues is the gas, just saying. Never had issues with saws.
What do you mean issues? Haven’t had any issues.
@@RockhillfarmYT all saws there are excellent. In the past I had issues with gasoline with my saws.
The 500i is Thirsty on the Gas though. Is happy enough running at half throttle in large Logs.
The 462 can be tune to run harder than the 500I. The bark box does make a difference for sure. All saws are great.
I was looking at the 500i but i live iin Colorado at 5500ft above sea level and I just don't know how well the efi will handle the thin air up here. I know a couple people that got the 261c with mtronic and they run super weak in this high altitude. I like the old school adjustability of a carburetor when it comes to this Colorado elevation and temperamental 2 strokes.
@@theshapeexistsIt would run better than carb. Way more adjustability than M tronic.
And the 500i can be tuned even more. Not only fuel tuning, port and polish but can also tune timing. The 500i will always out perform the 462 when it's apples to apples. But I'd say a tuned 462 will run the same or a bit more than a stock 500i.
@@theshapeexists run a 500i between 7000 and 9000 ft every weekend here in New Mexico. Never have any issues what so ever.
I’ve got the 260 w/20” bar, 461 Magnum w/32” bar & 028 w/16” bar All without electronic guts which I love. Pro chains only on all. The anti kick back chains rob too much hp. I sharpen chains once a year…… I keep at least 25ea chains in inventory for each saw on my bench. I was taught to work in the woods and not maintain equipment in the woods….. great content for those considering stepping up in hp! 👍👍

I have a huge collection of chains that need sharpened. Partially because every time I make a video like this I want to test with brand new chains to remove the variables.
Now that I have so many chains, though, I like the idea of bulk sharpening instead of sharpening every time I cut
The pro chains are the yellow ones, right? I have a green and a yellow and the yellow is def more aggressive.
The bark box will give better results. It’s not all about HP. Look at the torque numbers. If you ran those saws in some big wood. The results would be much different. The 661 would probably win and the 500I and the 461 would be very close.
I Own like 7 saws. My go Stihls are this. MS180 8.6lbs. Awesome for limbs and Light work and soft wood pines. If the trees look like over 10 inches I step up to my 261 10.2lbs. This saw screams and has NO issue running a 20 inch bar. This saw will destroy anything under 18 inches even hard woods.. Next I have my 362 12.3lbs This saw will pull a 25 inch bar no issue and has more torque then the 261. Last is the 661. 16.5lbs. I have a 32 inch bar on it and it will blast though pretty much anything when its sharp. This covers pretty much all of my cutting and falling needs currently. However a 500i or 462 would be amazing to add to my collection. And then I could use my 661 for milling.
Why would you go to all the work of making a comparison video and not have a new chain one of the saws? Makes the whole video have zero real comparison.. let's jist compare these saws bit put a variable in it that voids everything we are trying to compare..
I have a 661 and a 251. If I'm just doing firewood, I'll pick up the 251 everytime. It's a rapier, as compared to the 661 which is more of a broadsword - I use it for dropping big trees and for milling. Milling with the 661, it just howls away all day running a 44" bar and full skip milling chain.

462 beats all of them forgot thar part .after 2 modifications. All stihl saws need them .just fact or there over priced hype.stock I mean
If you lean on that 661 it will cut faster because it takes bigger chips and it's harder to bog down.
That makes sense. I bet you’re right.
I always just let the chain pull it in and the weight of the saw pull it down. With the 500 if you push on it, you’re not gonna cut faster you’re just going to slow it down.

If you don’t watch the news and get out and talk to people, you see a lot of good down to earth people
I usually log with my old trusty 066 25" bar. For limbing and bucking a 038 20" bar, some days I still use a 1970s 041 with a 24" bar, just to show the young guys how we use to do it years ago. Kinda like the way the old timers teased me about how they used two man hand saws when they were kids.
Those older saws that had the zero at the start of the model number seem to hold up forever.
I think it would be comparable to a 662, 362, and 462.
That is a great lineup of saws and it’s awesome that you didn’t just have to spend $1500 on something new to keep going
I agree with your partner. My go-to saw is a 261 no C or M old school . 20-inch bar . I have 024 , 026 ,361, 044,441 , 460 ,660, 880, 200T 194T 193T non of these have electronic ignition.
My junk saws are . 201tc 210c the rest I sold .
261 is your side arm, and the 361 is your shotgun . I would say in the big saws , my 044 slantfin red lever is enough for me . I have never used the 880
Using a short bar means you have to bend down and that’s unnecessary work in my opinion.
I don’t want to run anything that can’t truly handle a 25 inch bar.
Good thing is we don’t all have to agree, we can all use what we like
If your 661 didn’t beat those other two saws then something is wrong with it. I’ve ran mine brand new vs brand new 500i and it smokes it. Pulling a 32 inch chain. I have an Egan straight shot on mine. It makes a difference. I mainly did it for heat reduction while milling. All nice saws. I wouldn’t mind having a 500i for weight
I also have a 261 and I agree. I mill and kill trees with the 661 and almost everything else with the 261. Cutting firewood with a 661 and a 20 inch bar is fun though

Because he didn't have a new chain on it.. idk why you woukd go to all the work of this and leave such a huge thing that will skew the results

I run a 500i with a bark box as well, the bark box improves sound not allot on performance UNTILL you add a max flow intake, having these paired makes a huge difference. If your able to exhaust air faster, it doesn't matter much if your getting the same ammount of air in. All 5he intake and more air in and out, definately a noticeable power difference.
Sure, but you’re not going to convince me that you’re getting any more airflow out of the max flow compared to stock when they are both clean.
@Alan Meyers I believe it does simply because the max flow system has a much larger surface area exposed, and the cover for it has allot more holes for air to pass through. If the engine is calling for more air these two things provide extra paths for the Air to pass through. I can't speak for those of you at sea level as I have not run a saw at sea level in 25 years, but where I am at 7,500' I can legitimately say it helps at my other property cutting just below tree line at 11,200' it is night and day difference.

Why? Why do u compare anything by cutting a 12" log?
Why not put a 50" bar thru it? Its still a 12" log.
Cut a 24" log with 25" bar & then u got something. If it uses a 36" bar chances are your 25" bar does the job in most cases. Use a 25" log. If u want to really put the 500 to the test then put a 36" bar on both 500/661 & get a 32"-34" log & youll find out whats what!
Until then, you're just playing.
I have an older 036 and it’s just great for all around use. For me that is.
I think that would be comparable to the newer 362 which I mentioned in the video as maybe being the ideal every day saw, but I’ve never actually ran one.
I’m impressed how many guys are still running those model saws with the zero at the front 20+ years later. Great durability.
@@RockhillfarmYT yes, I believe it to be very similar. It’s a great saw, does everything I ask of it.
Ive got a 261, 462 and 661 to use for clearing trees from area waterways. The 661 is a BEAST with a 36" bar but it wears you out quickly. Its certainly not an all day saw. However the reach with the 36" bar is great when needed, especially cutting underwater. The 261 with a 20inch bar is a good general purpose small saw. My 462 with a 25 inch bar is the workhorse though. It can tackle most things and I can run it all day long without getting wore out. I LOVE the wrap around handle on my 462 and think its a must have.
That said, I'm trying a demo 500I with a 25 inch bar. So far I LOVE the fast acceleration, extra power for only a half pound more weight over the 462. Ill see how I like it today maybe Ill get one too or sell the 462 to a friend to get the 500i.
I just wish we had proper saw shops in Ohio like we had in the PNW to port them and make them breathe better. At the very least im considering a new airfilter and bark box or equivalent.
Without the modification s you could've saved half the money and got a makita /dollar 7900 7910.half cost .I own those saws you have but they need modified
Im old school. I rather tune my own saws rather than paying a dealer if the electronics goes south.
The true test is torque. Dig in the dogs and press until you stop the chain, good luck with stopping the 661
I've got a 250,271 and a 461 magnum...and I love the 250 after muffler mod and tuned it screams and it's light
Interesting comparison, Brock. I’m not sure it’s long term review yet. The 500i hasn’t been out THAT long. :). I’d consider a long time review after about 20 years of use. :). At least, that’s how old my Stihl chainsaw is.
I’ve had mine about 2 years. Still interested to see if these saws hold up like the new ones but 2 years with no issues would give me a little confidence as a buyer

Hey buddy, I watched your comparison yesterday on that oak log on your skid, I believe to get a honest comparison you need to be running the same bars!
The 500i needs to run & calibrate before running ( 3to5 min)

When I felling a big tree or bucking big logs I run my 500i but when the cutting gets smaller I prefer my 046 it has a slower rpm and more torqe high rpm,s are not greatest when cutting 9" branches. My 500 is noticeably lighter than my 046. I can,t tell the difference between an 046 or 461 they run the same.

I finally came across a Stihl hand trimmer that was made in Germany @ a pawn shop. Most of our stores don’t carry Stihl equipment that is made in Germany. Not even John Deere dealership.

All 3 are made in Germany. All Stihl pro saws are made in Germany
Many years ago I found a Stihl arborist chainsaw commercial model at that and that’s what I’ve used . I don’t bring down trees as I would typically do tree trimming work and so I also owned a Stihl pole saw. I never needed a heavy duty commercial chainsaw for felling .
Oh with that arborist chainsaw, I’ve also cut stumps that were left out after a tree company brought down a pecan or live oak tree and it did a great job plus it’s very light .

Testing big saws in small wood is something that never needs to be done. Just look that the speed of each saw, the fastest spinning saw will win. Now put a 28" bar on each and burry it in hardwood. Totally different outcomes.
I compared the same saws in a giant log. Same result
Well you are late to the party. There is a plethora of vids where the 661 smokes the 500 once real work starts. Like all the first videos that popped up with people putting the 500 against a 395xp on a 10" log. Like really? And I don't even have a dog in this race, I like husky for a big cube ever since my 288xp. The 462 is the real gem. Just a little work and it will hang or beat the 500 all while being a tad lighter and being able to be rebuilt for the price of just the injection on the 500. It's why I'll always consider the 500 nothing more then a novelty.
