But once he's born, she realizes she can't bring herself to use her own child for the experiment so she adopts Shiro and uses her instead. They experimented on her in order to gain insight in how to heighten a person's immune system and unintentionally made her the first deadman who is able to pass it on to others. She goes through horrific experimentation with her limbs often falling off/deteriorating with them having to sew them back on. The experimentation was so painful that it caused her to create a second homicidal personality called Wretched Egg to cope with the pain who is the red man. The Tokyo earthquake was caused by Wretched Egg in an attempt to commit suicide as she was in so much pain however she was unable to due to how fast her body regenerates. TL;DR they make something called the Mother Goose system to keep the Wretched Egg personality at bay/subduing her however there are times it isn't strong enough and Wretched Egg takes control. When she sees Ganta's class is visiting the park, she decides to kill all his classmates and infects Ganta with the deadman strain to get him sent to the park and to get him to hate her so he will kill her, infecting him so he's stronger and more able to do so. She wants him to kill her because she loves him. The story ends with them fighting and he's unable to kill her so neither wins and Wretched Egg/Shiro is sent to a mental hospital and Ganta is cleared of all charges and it ends with him visiting her.

Imo I don't think it needed an epilogue because I think the ending was perfect, Ganta's talking to Shiro who appears to be asleep and after he leaves the last panel of the manga shows Shiro smiling and awake. This. This is the anime that got me to hate stupid story plots. It is so wards-back that having dramatic scenes and increasing sadism (physical and mental) is all that is driving the storylines. Go watch Claymore to see how plot and worldbuilding should make drama, not the other way around. 🤦
