I know you say you aren’t a wizard, but in my mind you are in order to be able to navigate all of this. :) Can you talk more about what you do during a class meeting and how it’s different than morning meeting?
I was an aide in a K-1 combo classroom, and it is amazing for building the maturity of the younger kids. In our school, since pre-K wasn't obligatory at the time, I'm not sure how students were selected, but I remember everyone HIGHLY benefiting from the setup. Of course, it helped that the teacher was unbelievably experienced, to the point where she even helped me create a lesson and lead it when she found out I was considering teaching as a career (even though I was more interested in high school). Mixed classes benefit kids because they have TWO whole years with the same teacher, so they feel like leaders when, at the beginning of the school year, they already know the norms and expectations of the space and love teaching the younger kids how to behave. Watching them grow was awesome. I don't have anything else to add because, yes, I did in fact become a high school teacher. But I will be teaching ELD 11 and ELD 12 in a combo class. I'm excited to see all the ideas in this video and comments from other teachers in similar classroom situations.
I taught a 2nd and 3rd combo last year and as of right now I will be teaching it this year as well. My math block was very similar to yours. I was very thankful that I was allowed to teach up for reading and writing so I only had to teach one lesson whole group. I would then meet with small groups for more targeted skills. I only taught my 2nd graders science and social studies. My 3rd graders, smaller group, went to the other classes for instruction. I am so jealous of your perks. The only perk of having a combo class in my district is that we get independent kids. It’s also nice that I get to loop with many of my previous students.
Love your Friday Centers!! Thinking about trying that out in my classroom this year! Great plan for your combo class. I love schedules and seeing how things will play out! Prayers for a great school year!!

I'm in Canada so I know it's bound to be different, but in all my life growing up as a student & all my time as a teacher, I've always been in split grades or taught split grades with the exception of this upcoming year. I will have a straight grade this year, and everyone is so jealous of me! It's such a rarity to have a straight grade here, not really sure why but it's just always been that way. It's UNREAL that you get a full time teaching partner, we don't have that here, that would be so wonderful! Best of luck this year!!
I was in a 4/5 combo as a kid, and I enjoyed my experience! We had a pretty similar setup and it worked well. I think it teaches a lot of other great life skills for the kids.
I'm heading into my 32nd yr in the classroom here in the UK. I've had mixed classes for at least 22 of those years! People get confused and upset when told their child will be in a mixed year group class, but as you said, it's not really any different to teaching a straight year group where you have children along the whole raft of abilities and interests!
I have a combo, 6th-8th grade class. It’s intensive needs (of all kinds, physical and intellectual), so I have them for all core classes, homeroom, and fundamental skills (think life skills and executive functioning). I love it.
Small group teaching is the way to go! I teach 3, 4, & 5 grade special education in a self contained classroom. Each student has their own plan and are on all different levels. We make it work with Small group centers! Utilizing your teaching assistant to help with classroom management and center engagement too!
Interesting concept. Sounds like you and your school have a great plan to implement it. I remember a combination class in my school when I was a kid (I wasn’t in it).
My principal just told me on Friday that I will be teaching a 2nd and 3rd grade combo class so this is very helpful. Combo classes are nothing new at least not in my district in Southern California but I've never had to teach one.
I'm starting my 25th year teaching a multi-age 3rd and 4th grade class. It presents a lot of challenges, but our school was founded with a multi-age philosophy. My one big frustration is that in recent years, while I am supposed to have a full time teaching assistant, we have trouble finding them and keeping them. We teach our core subjects aside from math in a two year cycle. I do A LOT of small group teaching and centers. The one advantage is that my older kids help my younger ones and I have my students for two years and really can build relationships with them. Math has been a challenge for me and this year we are starting a new curriculum...so I am still trying to figure out how to get two 60 minute lessons in (that's what the structure of the lessons is meant to be). Our previous curriculum had an online component, so that is what one grade was doing while the other was having small group lessons. I wish you all the best, it sounds like you have a great plan, are organized, and most importantly know the importance of being flexible. It is nice that they select more independent workers to be in your room. Have a great school year!!!!
I’ve taught a K/1 combo and your schedule sounds great! We had Benchmark Advance at the time and I found their theme alignment to be really helpful. All the grades have the same theme, just aligned to that grade level’s standards. It really helped my planning for science and social studies as well. As always, thank you for sharing your thinking with us! Good luck and have fun!
In my district combos aren’t a thing. We’ve had classes as small as 8 and as big as 33!! (It’s not normal but it has happened! ) Also in our district parents can request teachers so I’m sure if combos were a thing they would be able to opt out. It’s interesting to hear about how different districts tackle these type of things. Looking forward to following you this school year.

Those are GREAT perks! I teach a 1st/2nd combo in Southern CA.y only perk is $500 for classroom supplies + another $500 for me (paid at the end of the school year). My kids attend Specials once a day, 4 days a week. While one grade level is at specials, I HAVE TO do math intervention groups & I flip flop and do the same with the other grade when they return. Sadly, no prep time :-/ I love your schedule! Thank you for sharing. Curios how your schedule is working out now that you are teaching… is it still the same or have you done any changes?
This is such a common thing in Australia, at least where I teach, you’re lucky to get a straight grade after Kindergarten (kids that are 4 turning 5) and Prep (kids that are 5 turning 6). It’s so interesting to hear how things are done in different places.
In Canada we call them a split and they are super common. My entire elementary years I was in a split except kindergarten. Now as a parent my kids have had both spits or straights. @@EarlyEDventures Gotcha
Is this really rare in America? I am a uk based teacher and have only ever taught combo classes.
Will the kids know they are in a combo class? Will it be obvious to them?
following...curious as well
I was in a 4th/5th combo as a 4th grader, and I knew I was in a combo class. It didn’t bother me or my peers that we were in different grades. In fact, it allowed me to meet new kids and make new friends. Being in a combo class was the best as a student! I learned and grew so much.
Yes of course they will know they are in a combo class!
We start earlier, no prep period, and shorter lunch 😮
No prep period!??? The kids don’t get art, music or PE class??
@@EarlyEDventures music 30 minutes weekly. We teachers have to teach pe and art in elementary. I’m just in southern CA too.
Oh and our combo classes only get an aide for 3 hours
@@EarlyEDventures 2/3 combo. No prep period and no aide either. We get grade level collaboration once every two weeks for 2 1/2 hours. That’s when the kids get art or music.
We call it Multigrade. Happens when there is either insufficient kids to fill a class or understaffed.
10:06 Why do the students need brain breaks during flex time?
8:41 Are you not teaching 8th grade?
I hope you are healthy and are not frequently pulled for spec prof dev/curriculum mapping etc. As organized as YOU are, what a challenge for a sub!
@@facsmom nahhh if I’m ever out I would make it MUCH easier for a sub.
Have you ever had difficulty with other children doing the independent work but not being able to concentrate because your teaching on the carpet during that time?
@@EvelyneMariee not really….I spend a lot of time “practicing” and setting expectations. I also let kids move around the room and find a spot where they can focus the best
@@EarlyEDventures wow, that’s awesome! Ty for responding!
Second Steps is not my favorite personally. I like the concepts just not the material.
@@MrYoTeach ditto!
Ok but you’re looking so fit
🤣 thank you! Been working hard!
