I can never see the original ending as a failure in any way. Whether it was their intention or not, the minimalist, abstract style *perfectly* suited Shinji's struggle with questions of identity, sense of self and individuality.
it is surprisingly close an LSD experience even down to the pure abstraction, the questions, the loss of ego, the perception of yourself/others and ultimately the point of anything.
I always see this comment as if they're making some kind of breakthrough. Like, its pretty obvious that the series ends in Shinji's head, whereas the movie is what's going on around him during that time.
The TV ending is shown through the psyche of shinji. The EOE ending was the real metaphysical world ending and the psyches of every main character of the show
I remember watching one episode where they literally dragged this one scene of a train for 9 minutes straight. Just nothing but a show of a train for 9 minutes. No dialogues, no music, nothing happening except the train moving.

Damn, that bit about you inferring that Anno would be frustrated with people asking him the meaning behind his work and how that would be indicative of a failure on his part to communicate was freakin brilliant analysis. I didn't know anything about him going into this video, but you did a fantastic job describing him and his impact on the anime industry. This is why I love you as content creator so much: you can make these video essays on anything and make them interesting and insightful.
I think thats why he fell into even deeper depression after Eva finished. Cause ppl kept asking him what it meant. Funnily, Mizayaki commented that Anno had a talent in telling candid stories but then didn't demonstrate that at all from Eva
As someone who is autistic and also suffers from clinical depression, it’s no wonder that Anno’s work on Eva struck a chord with me. I can empathize with him on a certain level, on how hard it is to communicate with others and how easy it is to spiral into despair when all you feel inside is emptiness. I didn’t like Eva at the time I watched it, not because anything struck me as lazy or badly made, but because there was some stuff being expressed that hit way too close to home. Anno and I aren’t exactly similar, but I understand how he feels.
I've seen these Anno videos countless times just because they're so well put together and interesting enough to listen to over and over again. I hope you do another little series on another director soon!
This was a super fascinating look at Hedieki Anno's personally! I never really knew much about him outside of Evangelion so I enjoyed learning about the many other series he directed and his views on anime as a medium. This was really informative and thought provoking and really made my day :) thanks Digi!
Thanks for making a video about my second favourite director! Although there were many things I already knew some of them were entirely new to me, for example how the sarin incident influenced Eva. I identify with the Eva characters a lot more than with other characters althought I have a very nice life and I believe this video made me understand that a bit more. I am looking forward to part 2!
This video was fucking amazing. There is something that really intrigues me about how much you can "know" a person and really understand them from watching what they make and their comments and thoughts on it. It's amazing when you get to think of a creator not as "the guy who did these things I like", but as another human being with strengths, insecurities, beliefs, wishes, etc trying to show these pieces of him through art.Put that together with you analyzing a very interesting guy, who, due to how famous he got, has all these people making him this kind of mythic representation of a creator wanting to troll people, disregarding him as someone and I was so into this I can't really explain very well :)By the end of part 2 (which I saw in Dailymotion because of copyright BS) I was pumped and truly excited for what you said about Anno being able to get money and trying to become a kinda Godfather or curator of anime and Otaku culture, as much as I was a bit sad, just for the thought of him maybe becoming trapped in this position he put himself into and not making much more stuff, which is how he expresses himself (the clips you used were great and that last one is really awesome).Really fucking great video :)
congratulations digi - starts applause and slowly hear crowd cheer (i knew i needed a free day to take all this in, keep making stuff just in general keep making stuff to enjoy, doesn't matter what it is)
I'm writing something on Anno as a director (as opposed to as an animator or even otaku) and he is so interesting. His shots and framing...But this has been really insightful into him as A person, too.
Knowing that the anime industry goes through up and downs due to forces beyond its control, for some reason, is really reassuring. Knowing that as long as there is someone that loves the medium and is willing to bet everything that they have on it to revitalize and reinvent it, is incredibly inspiring.
It's videos like these, including the Eva analysis, that make me wish I liked Evangelion more. As a result I watch more analysis of Eva and Anno than any other anime production or director in an attempt to see what everyone seems to love about it. Keep on keepin' on Digi.
Nice video. I would still say that the original ending is more thematically satisfying than the one from the End of Evangelion. The original shows Shinji progressing, becoming a better person. The latter shows him regressing. Some call it a troll ending, one where it provides the fanservice viewers wanted to see at the cost of its characters resolving their problems
that rei opus in the end of the second video... kare kano is so gorgeous in the way of showing the characters almost as good as evangelion. for some reason I love the last 2 episodes of evangelion and kare kano... black and white endless somehow AND nostalgic.
2 things: 1) Eva did not have a fixed timeslot while it first aired (source: German ADV Platinum Edition Booklets) 2) The next Episode preview with unfinished animation from the storyboard stage was added in the LD Editions (along with other content), which were released roughly after End of Evangelion aired in theaters in Japan. The TV airings had in fact previews of the TV versions of the last two Episodes. (sources: German ADV Platinum Edition Booklets + TV Version Episode 24, svenge.pcriot.com/ (release dates))
Ever since I started watching your channel I find myself stopping more often in my anime and manga to break down certain key scenes or to analyze the characters and plot up to that point and looking for things like the tension and release cycles. Most importantly I find myself asking 'why do I like/dislike this' as before it was all just based on the feels. Thank you for opening another avenue for me to enjoy my favorite medium. As a side note fuck the PBS Idea channel that guy is douche.
Can you please consider making this a series, i would love to see one for togashi yoshiro, all i know is that he has created 2 of my favourite anime and he is lazy/injured/dquest addict.
Honestly, the fact that Anno was such a huge anime and movie fan is what makes it impossible for me to believe the interpretation that Evangelion is somehow judging otakus. I believe, firmly, that it's not supposed to bring you down, it's supposed to be reassuring you that even if you feel like you can't connect to people and shouldn't try, because you'd bother them, because you'd fail, whatever - you DO deserve love, and you DO have a chance. That even if you feel like you don't, you have some value as a human being. Though I do think that the conclusion is a bit too rushed and kinda makes that message harder to understand.
Interesting video choice. Enjoyed it, as always. Also, take solace in the fact that your pronunciation is better than 90% of anime youtubers who can't get the vowel sounds right.
The early stage's of the anime industry sound strikingly similar to the early stage of the American animated industry at the time. Pushing out what can only be made for the sake of selling product's. Hideaki Anno sounds like the video game equivalent of Satuoru Iwata. Evengalion saving the animation industry, and Super Mario saving the gaming Industry. eva is bitter-sweet. I think every individual has something they dislike about it much like it's with all anime and art in general. So I find it fascinating how bitter parts might actually make it better. The cliches, the last 2 episodes, annoying protagonist and the shonan elements. A a whole the series seem to capture the human experience.
Hey, while interesting, you misinterperated a big part. I Japanese society you always downplay your own work. Usually in Japanese if you say "Im not really that good" is a humble way of saying "I think I am really good". People who do play up that aspect are viewed as full of themselves where as humble people are held higher. Ive lived in Tokyo with a Japanese family btw, who worked at a large company.
Just so you know Digibro, just in case you didn't already know this, depressed people, even those who overcome it, never have a high opinion of themselves. They are often times their own worst critics.
Nadia ended in a trainwreck? Are you kidding me? The last few episodes of Nadia included some of the best scenes Anno ever put to animation. You are probably thinking of episodes 23-34, the Island and Africa arcs. These are hated by most, including Anno himself (He did not direct these episodes, also they were animated in Korea). But on episode 35 Anno was back and the anime became better than it had ever been before, right up until the end.
I have to criticise you statement about Nadia. The problem with the show is actually that NHK ordered 12 filler episodes, which were actually directed by a replacement director. From episode 35 on Anno was back in the directors chair, and all i can say is that the story conclusion to Nadia is one of the best expriences in anime i ever had. Tbh. Fushigi no Umi no Nadia is one of the best anime shows ever made if you skip episodes 23-34 (the Island filler arc - which was indeed horrible). Not only is the cast of characters one of the best out there but they almost reach NGEs level of psychological complexity, which is especially true to the character of Electra, who is actually the most psychologically broken character of the show (very reminiscent of NGE). That is also true for the visual presentation. The way Anno conveys deeper meaning through "camera angles" and symbolism is nothing short of amazing and can be found throughout the entire show, even though not to the same extent as NGE. The same goes for the pacing of the show (of cause excluding the filler arc). There is no episode that is unnecessary... Every episode ads something to the big picture... The characters grow and change in a way that not many shows can accomplish with this kind of perfection. In conclusion: Fushigi no Umi no Nadia is a true masterpiece. Hideaki Anno was able to convey the whole spectrum of emotions in his 27 episodes with such a level of perfection and artistic vision, that it will stay with the viewer for a long time. ESPECIALLY the bittersweet ending is one of the most beautiful endings in anime history. It is a show everyone has to experience... Just skipping the filler eps 23-34, i cannot stress this out enough.
+DesMondesBlut I've seen the show, the filler had ruined it for me to the point that even tho the ending was great, I didn't care what was happening anymore. The movie was awful, too. I might be due for a rewatch tho and skipping the filler.
Yeah i see what you mean... It`s the only show i can think of that has a filler that can ruin it. I`ve recently rewatched the show for the first time since my childhood and was ready for it, but nonetheless i needed to remind myself how good the show was until EP 22 (which btw. is one of Annos best works - needless to say that i rewatched this ep after finishin the island arc). BTW: The movie as well wasn`t directed by Anno.
+Yo listen up here's a story Well, besides the total rewriting of the characters and therefor changing their personalities to the degree that they don`t resemble their previous selves anymore, actually... nothing. All the episodes until the filler arc have not only a steady progression in terms of character and story developement, but they tell a consistant story. Even though some episodes may feel episodic (like the NGE eps 8-13), they constantly feel like there is a progression, either with the characters or the main plot. In the filler arc the characters strand on a "magic island", that has NOTHING to do with the main plot and experience absurd and totally disconnected adventures, that could as well be part of a pokemon anime show. And i`m not even talking about the Africa episodes. That being said, the filler arc has been directed by somenone else as a replacement, because the studio wanted to prolong the show artificially. From episode 34 onwards Anno was back and the actual plot kicks in again (and from then on i would say the show reaches new highpoints even compared to the amazing ep 22). Check out my MAL review if you want to give Nadia a watch (user: Mondblut), i`m to lazy to go into more detail about the show here.^^
***** nice, I'll definetly check it out! Yeah I totally understand what you mean, but at least it's filler so it's not so bad rigth? I recently finished this one series and like. The last 10 episodes were so bad and the character I loved so much in the first half just straight up degraded and I honestly couldn't recognize him, not to mention the story also started getting dumber and dumber, man I wasn't amused lol. Anyway, thanks, I'll make sure to skip the Nadia filler!
More useless weeaboo knowledge ? Um... yes please. In all seriousness, this was hella entertaining, and i catually learned something lol. Great job guys.
In some cases the problem is not the director or the artist itself, sure, every artist have ups and downs, can create master pieces or create disaster, but something, and really sometimes, the problem isn't the artist, but the fanbase that they create and the stupid expectations that they gather along the years, creating a false image and a false expectation of the work of the artist, so when the artist decide to do a new project, trying to innovate or change the source material that he base his work the fanbase shouldn't bitch like little children that lose their toys. To me is amusing when fans say that they love some artist to bitching in the next when the say artist do exactly that he would do in the previous years, that is totally lack of respect for the artist that they say they love.
Does everyone just forget that the Evangelion anime came out a year after the manga, and then did the thing that everyone hated Fullmetal Alchemist for, but then made it work? It really bugs me that no one talks about the Evangelion manga, if I'm wrong please tell me because I need to know.
Hey Digi, I just wanted to say that I liked this video and I've liked all of the videos that I've seen of yours so far. I used to have the impression that you were a pretentious cynical asshole, but that was before I watched any of your content or read or heard any of your actual words. You seem like a good genuine human. It was wrong of me to create ill preconceptions of you in my mind. I really did enjoy this though. I've been digging deeper into Eva and Anno (I haven't even seen Eva yet - that part still has yet to come) ((I know every major plot point in Eva already however)) and I really find it all fascinating. I love how polarizing Eva is. I love what drastically different things people take away from it, I love that so many people think it's meaningless and so many people think it's profoundly meaningful. It's just so interesting to me.
I still find it hard to believe that the same guy who created Evangelion, my favorite anime, did the latest movie in the Godzilla franchise, a franchise that I've loved my whole life. Shin Gojira was a wonderful movie. Hey Digibro, I doubt you'll see this but did you see Shin Gojira?
Autistic isn't necessarily a bad thing, people like that are highly focused on one particular thing, and if that thing is a skill, like animating, it can help benefit their lives.

Buffoon1980 THANK YOU FOR GETTING IT.
I was going to write something similiar. Good to know more people get it and don´t consider that ending a failure.
I don’t consider it a failure I just find it to have a lack of closure, and I think End of Evangelion toes things together much better
I didn't consider it a failure because of the wacky nature of the end but I wish the rest of the plot threads could have been resolved
it is surprisingly close an LSD experience even down to the pure abstraction, the questions, the loss of ego, the perception of yourself/others and ultimately the point of anything.
Just to point out, I always thought that both "Endings" of Eva were the same. Just from different perspectives.
That is actually the way it works. The last two episodes of the series are after lillith-rei begins instrumentality in the EoE.
One is small scale, while the other is a planetary scale.

Hideaki Anno really did revolutionize anime back then. Every episode of eva is gold to me even the fillers and the last 2 episode
Why does no one remember GunBuster?
Yume Sekai There's no filler in nge though
Yeah I agree, but many called that a filler back in those days. For me the last two is special. I understand Anno struggle.

Random observation: Gendou Ikari slightly resembles Hideaki Anno in terms of facial features.
In extracurricular classes with sempai when they where about to show his mom and dad i was really expecting to see Gendo fucking Ikari himself.

+DesMondesBlut Dude I'm intrigued, what happened in this filler??
+Yo listen up here's a story
Well, besides the total rewriting of the characters and therefor changing their personalities to the degree that they don`t resemble their previous selves anymore, actually...
One of my favorite bands did a concept album that was inspired by Evangelion.
Discordance Axis?
More useless weeaboo knowledge ? Um... yes please.
In all seriousness, this was hella entertaining, and i catually learned something lol. Great job guys.
"Most anime makers are basically autistic"
ok
right
i hear nujabes in the backround
thats artgasm
Hard work and Guts!
Was that "hard work and guts" a Diebuster reference? I like it
In some cases the problem is not the director or the artist itself, sure, every artist have ups and downs, can create master pieces or create disaster, but something, and really sometimes, the problem isn't the artist, but the fanbase that they create and the stupid expectations that they gather along the years, creating a false image and a false expectation of the work of the artist, so when the artist decide to do a new project, trying to innovate or change the source material that he base his work the fanbase shouldn't bitch like little children that lose their toys. To me is amusing when fans say that they love some artist to bitching in the next when the say artist do exactly that he would do in the previous years, that is totally lack of respect for the artist that they say they love.
I liked the anime ending.
It's just so interesting to me.
will you re upload part 2 diffrently to avoid copyright? i would really enjoy watching it
I still find it hard to believe that the same guy who created Evangelion, my favorite anime, did the latest movie in the Godzilla franchise, a franchise that I've loved my whole life. Shin Gojira was a wonderful movie.
Hey Digibro, I doubt you'll see this but did you see Shin Gojira?
Aaaaaaaaand, Khara has already taken down part 2. Awesome.
Autistic isn't necessarily a bad thing, people like that are highly focused on one particular thing, and if that thing is a skill, like animating, it can help benefit their lives.
+CornishCreamtea07 yeah the word just comes with a bad connotation
Its just the "retarded" of our time. Calling someone "retarded" sounds childish and saying "autistic" somehow sounds more mature.
if anyone is autistic, i suggest meditation. with that genius focus, you'll go further than most people.
