- At the time of recording, we're reading "Little Pilgrim's Progress" to our kids. So it seems fitting that we Should Share this requested hymn now!
John Bunyan's Folk Hymn, To Be a Pilgrim A Hymn for Today!
He who would valiant be
'gainst all disaster,
let him in constancy
follow the Master.
There's no discouragement
shall make him once relent
his first avowed intent
to be a pilgrim.
Who so beset him round
with dismal stories,
do but themselves confound-
his strength the more is.
No foes shall stay his might,
though he with giants fight;
he will make good his right
to be a pilgrim.
Since, Lord, Thou dost defend
us with Thy Spirit,
we know we at the end
shall life inherit.
Then, fancies, flee away!
I'll fear not what men say,
I'll labor night and day
to be a pilgrim.
This Morning, before editing, this video together I was actually reading "Little Pilgrim's Progress" (Written by Helen L. Taylor) to the kids, and got up to the part. (SPOILER ALERT!!!) Where the little pilgrim "Faithful" Is killed by the people at Vanity Fair. And the beauty of His testimony to the truth in the midst of those who reviled him, brought tears to my eyes, even though it's a kids version.
In all honesty, I pray I'd have the courage to stand up like that. I fear I do not. But should the time come when any of us is bruised or beaten or ridiculed, or even killed, may we be so full of the spirit, that we'll boldly proclaim the truth in love so that those who hate God, may come to repent and trust in Christ and so that God May be Glorified.
(Mark my words, if you love the Lord and share the truth, you will be hated by the world.)
Be on your guard, If you feel at home here in the world, and are setting up your little kingdom here, you may not be a Christian Pilgrim at all, but rather like one of the townsfolk, in Vanity Fair. Destined for destruction.
The Christian does not make their home on the road!
Blessings and peace to you, and may we all glorify our Risen Lord, In the public squares without fear, and love those who do not know Our Saviour Jesus, who is Himself the way!

John Bunyan's hymn, - To Be a Pilgrim, has a delightful tune, and the song itself is quite folksy, so it suits us to a T. I remember as a kid reading the version with big pictures called "Dangerous Journey." And boy some of the images from that book have stuck with me even as an adult.
