MiG-15 Battles the Wind

- This is the story of an old model that hadn't seen flight in over a decade. The 17" rubber-powered free-flight model of the MiG-15 was built in 1998, from the Dave Livesay plan. After years in storage, she has resurfaced as a fine flying model, this time over Wawayanda on 10.1.21, in less than ideal conditions. The wind was a force, but I was pleased to see her handle it, and continue on. Seems this old bird is wanting to fly again! Filmed with a Canon SX20-IS & iPhone 11 Pro. Wow, free flight "jet" makes spin manouvre and recovery, so nice to see, thank you.
There is a video on TH-cam of a guy flying a rubber powered Mig 17 that used a ducted fan. Neat stuff.
Great Video! The place looks like a painting, what a beautiful place!
Another Masterpiece. Thank you for sharing your wonderful skill.
Wow what a beauty, nothing like the still fall evening air for the final flight... Thanks Max...
Amazing how well she flew!
Lovely model. I've always loved the Mig 15, it was my first ever Airfix kit back in the day!
Thank you for sharing another one of your flight adventures...beautiful!
Awesome model! Just heard your interview on Free Flight Fanatic, excited for your Basic series!
Wow, that was unexpected. What a cool model. Iconic image. Incredible flight in windy conditions.
Always, good show
Thx, was fun to bring her out again.
What a beautiful and unique model. Great flights!
Another happy landing ! Man that looks so nice !
Some great flights with a difficult subject. Those swept wings combined with the huge tail of a Mig 15 make for some tight trim parameters as you remarked. But when you hit that sweet spot, it sure looks nice. Those gusty wind flights with the wild spirals and pull-outs were cool. Very nice job on the building and the framework shots were really informative for scratch builders. Thanks much!
Congratulations.
It is always a pleasure to watch your videos.
Greetings from Argentina
Thx!
You are truly amazing, getting her to do rolls 😂👍🏻. What a beautiful plane, I’m sure she’s as happy to be flying again as we are to see it.
haha...was not my intention, but I'm glad she recovered!
Fascinating!.
Quite an art.
👏👏👏👏👏👍
Gliders and rubber powered are so peaceful.
Wonderful stuff
Nice job on the plane. What is the heavenly music?
Even as a 17" model...still a deadly silhouette.
Incredible
Here in Central Florida we would kill to have such a large field to fly in.
That 1st flight was a "cardiac arrest" special .. ha ha. By the 3rd & 4th flight, she was flying well, though I kept saying "turn damn you" on the 4th flight. I noticed that your winder cranks ccw ... every winder I've ever seen or used cranks cw. You mentioned that you had a lot of tail ballast, but then shaved the prop. Perhaps a more robust prop would allow you to remove some tail ballast ?? Anyway, nice flights. I remember the weather was great on 10-1 ... I did a shoot early in the morning with one of my UAVs to get some video of a lake front (lake Erie) Ferris wheel for my channel. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
A more robust prop would require more tail ballast, increasing the weight, sink speed and moments of inertia, adversely affecting stability. The original plane had the heavy jet engine midships and swept wings, putting the CG far aft. Good for a rubber model, because you can run the motor all the way to the back. Still seems a bit nose heavy when the power comes down. The aft CG also reduces the tail and fin moments compared to a conventional layout. That in turn affects the dihedral requirement. This is a different kind of bird and standard expectations must be revised.
Thx for the comments, Bill. That's the classic Rees winder, which has the distinction of reverse winding. Many of us in the FAC have one since the late Dave Rees introduced them in the late 80s, I believe. Adding a heavier prop would only lead to even more tail weight to hit the CG. I could actually use a few more inches of rubber length to help remove the ballast...but that's a lot of rubber for a 12" hook to peg.
@@maxfliart Right on the CG remark (prop weight) .. not sure what I was thinking about ... senior moment I suspect .. ha ha. Okay on the prop winder. I still have an old 16:1 CW winder .. but all my old rubber craft need to be stripped down & recovered having been holed over many, many years of dormancy. Cheers.
@@billsomrak That's ok, Bill. I often get my mix all talked up... :-D
I wonder just exactly how many targets of opportunity such as that tractor have been taken out by MiG15's? I mean it was obvious that pilot was doing evasive manuvers before finally getting within feet of the tractor before releasing the fury it's mission. Thanks for sharing!
beautiful cinema ! , catches the exact mental mod imo , please tell me what is the music in the backround?
"Flying the Dream" by Ashot Danielyan via motionarray.com. His music is captivating, and lines up beautifully with free-flight.
Your planes are amazing. I recently purchaced my 1st balsa and paper kit and was wondering if you have any build advice videos for beginers on your chanel. I have been building other types of models over the last 50 years.
I am amazed at the detail as well as the flight times of your planes. Thanks.... Dan.
Welcome to free-flight, Dan. I don't have any specific videos yet for beginners, although u can get the idea some of the Start to Finish films I've made. I'd suggest checking out the tutorials at Easy Built Models. Here's the link. Have fun! easybuiltmodels.com/tips.htm#gsc.tab=0
@@maxfliart Thanks I'll check it out.
Yay
Wow
I just ran an RC version of that into a wall.. balsa kit like this one will replace that airframe
I have the fan from umxf16....
Look awesome against the Simpson's Sky. Your videography is as much your art as the model...Moses
Lovely old war bird
👍🏻
Where did you find the plans for the rubber powered Mig jet? I saw a video of one made into a rubber powered fan induction powered Mig on You Tube. Your Mig flew great. Mine doesn't. I haven't built one yet. 🤣😂🤣😂
Thx. It's designed by David Livesay, and is posted on the Flying Aces Club's website. The link is in the description above.
@@maxfliart I am having a problem with the link you sugested I link up to. It won't load up on my cell phone for some unknown reason.
@@richardbrowne1217 Hmmmm...not sure, since it just worked for me. Try this again. I'll send another link if this doesn't work for u. www.flyingacesclub.com/PLANS/Livesay/Mig-15peanut.pdf

@@maxfliart I have a new cell phone called a Samsung 12. It's not allowing me to load up the link. I'll try Goolge.
I wonder: would it be possible to build a impeller or would the rubber band cause too much trouble and turbulences?
or is it an issue of size and performance?
A fellow on YT has one that flies indoors.
@@interman7715 oh! I will look for that vid. Thanks!
Yes, it could work, but duration is limited. Still, it's very cool to see it in action.
@@maxfliart I see. Thank you for the explanation.^^
How on God's beautiful green earth are you able to get 2600 turns on that little rubber band motor, nearly every time I go over 500 turns on my little guillows javelin it snaps😔
Hi Rafael. It's all about the length & width of the rubber. For the MiG-15, the motor I made is long & skinny, so 3,000 turns works, especially since it's a light weight model.
Dear friend. I'm an aeromodelist in Brazil, however, here we don't have stores that sell tissue paper for covering. Could you refer me to virtual stores so I can buy the tissue paper so I can cover my free flight models?
Thanks!
Sure, I would suggest Easy Built & Volare. Their links are in the text above.
