My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him, throughout all generations.
He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek.

He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

This is just a superb rendition. What shaped, passionate when needed, restrained and controlled singing, with the text driving everything. So musical! Must be the best-ever recording of this setting.

This is out ahead as my favourite of all "Mag and Nuncs" - joyful to listen to, one of the greatest choral experiences to sing, with its seamless interlocking of inspired, subtle, passionate melody and harmony. Murrill should be as well loved as the others in the thre Herberts of 20th. Century English sacred music.
Another fine setting of the canticles by another composer new to me.
Composers can end up being remembered for just a couple of works, as is the case with Murrill. Interestingly, he had some involvement at Bletchley Park as a member of the Intelligence Corps during WW2, although in peacetime he was a musician.

I am learning more than I bargained for here - so nice of you all: I think its good to be generous with knowledge as it appears to be rather rare these days.
We, here, belong to the "previous" generation and believe that benefices (including knowledge) should be freely shared. Unfortunately, the world seems to be heading in the opposite direction...

AOS I think your right and lamentable it is. I will soon be 58 and I like to think I am part of the said generation or at least its dying embers. Many that know me (or have known) have got know many composers even if not particularly interested: its passing down not only knowledge but a love of music of all kinds. Tell me AOS, is it me or are people not just so informed? It begs the question "Are schools doing enough.......... I mean, I picked up on music in the house during the 60's(preteens) and also in the cinema. But in those days we listened to the radio as well as a family. Perhaps both ' institutions' should do more.
Then you *are* part of that generation... (Although it doesn't sound as if the embers are quite dying yet!) Perhaps the problem is that we have begun to confuse "information" with "knowledge", just as one might confuse " cleverness" with "wisdom". But in the end it seems to us to be a question of changing social and cultural values, against which educational institutions can never truly militate.
Always enjoyed singing the Murrill at Lincoln as a chorister, and have had the privilege of singing in choirs directed by Barry Rose, so this is a delight, with some lovely singing. Thank you for posting!

I had only just barely heard of Murrill - this channel is educational, among its other virtues!
These are both splendid but I like the Nunc Dimittis especially. It's amazing how many wonderful settings there can be of the same words.... I couldn't choose between Stanford in Bb and Howells Coll. Reg. as it was, and then along came this one, just as fine :-) (it's Sunday evening, so I'm listening to them)
Hopefully, there will yet more settings to come!
In these current days of 'lockdown', this setting is being broadcast on BBC Choral Evensong on Wednesday, 06 May 2020 in an archive broadcast from Tewkesbury Abbey and first aired in May 2014.
I discovered Murrill by way of the NPR program "Pipedreams." They played a Sarabande composed by him. This is wonderful. Thanks so much.

Finally!!! In 1978 I listened to this Magnificat/Nunc Dimittis for the very first time. Salisbury Cathedral. An organized tour for Dutch admirers of Anglican church music. We were allowed to attend the rehearsal prior to the Evensong (11-6-1978). I have recorded both the rehearsal (with Richard Seal as Master of the Choir) and the Evensong. I've never been able to retrieve what is was, until now!! Thank you ArchivesofSound.
If you still have those Salisbury recordings, you might consider donating them (or a copy of them) to the Archive of Recorded Church Music, of whom ArchivesofSound is now a part. "Private" recordings are always of special interest.
I would love to do that! I have already asked Richard Seal for his permission to do so. Although he refused my offer to shower him with a copy ('Please, don't do this to me. It's too far beyond me'). I've already digitilized the old cassette and I will make a copy for you. Perhaps not the greatest quality, but great, great fun, especially the rehearsal!!
