- 27 साल की उम्र तक अकबर के जीवन की सबसे बड़ी त्रासदी थी कि उनके कोई बेटा नहीं था. 1564 में ज़रूर उनके दो जुड़वां बेटे पैदा हुए थे हसन और हुसैन, लेकिन वो सिर्फ़ एक महीने तक ही जीवित रह पाए थे. अकबर ने अपने प्रिय संत ख़्वाजा मोइनुद्दीन चिश्ती से यहां तक कहा कि अगर आप मुझे एक बेटा दे दें तो मैं आगरा से अजमेर पैदल चल कर आपकी दरगाह पर सिर झुकाउंगा. आख़िर ईश्वर ने उनकी सुन ली और उनके दरबारियों ने उन्हें ख़बर दी कि आगरा के पास ही एक पहाड़ी पर एक और पीर सलीम चिश्ती रहते हैं, जो आपकी मुराद पूरी कर सकते हैं. जहाँगीर पर एक किताब 'एन इंटिमेट पोर्ट्रेट ऑफ़ अ ग्रेट मुग़ल जहाँगीर' लिखने वाली पार्वती शर्मा बताती हैं, "दुनिया में कोई ऐसी चीज़ नहीं थी जो अकबर के पास नहीं थी. बस उनके औलाद नहीं थी. वो इस आस में सलीम चिश्ती के पास जाने लगे. एक दिन अकबर ने सीधे उनसे पूछ ही लिया, मेरे कितने बेटे पैदा होंगे? उन्होंने जवाब दिया, ख़ुदा तुमको तीन बेटे देगा. ऐसा ही हुआ. लेकिन चिश्ती के आशीर्वाद से पैदा हुए सलीम बाद में उनकी मृत्यु का कारण भी बने." वो लिखती हैं, "एक बार अकबर उनसे पूछ बैठे, आप कब तक इस दुनिया में रहेंगे? सलीम चिश्ती ने जवाब दिया, जब शहज़ादा सलीम किसी चीज़ को पहली बार याद कर, उसे दोहराएंगे, उसी दिन मैं इस दुनिया से कूच कर जाउंगा. कई दिनों तक अकबर ने सलीम को कुछ नहीं पढ़वाया. लेकिन एक दिन सलीम ने किसी की कही हुई दो पंक्तियाँ दोहरा दीं. उसी दिन से शेख़ सलीम चिश्ती की तबियत ख़राब होने लगी और कुछ दिनों बाद उनका देहावसान हो गया."
