Thanks for your question, Tanner! The lathe does not come with the turning tools, you will need to purchase those separately. Highland has a set of 'Bodger' turning tools that are reasonably priced and decent starter tools. Make sure you have a method for sharpening as well!

I love this lathe, found it in the road for free when someone was throwing it out. We may have different versions though? My live center won’t come out as you demonstrated.

Thanks for your question! The lathe's capacity should be adequate for handling the needs of folks turning normal-sized pipes, and is a great tool for a beginning turner to get started with.

For 20-24 inch platters, you will need a pretty big lathe. The Oneway 2436 3hp lathe is the one recommended for this sort of project. A mini lathe will unfortunately not be able to handle a project this size. Google "Purchasing a wood lathe, fundamentals of woodworking" for a great article that will offer more details on buying the lathe you need. Thanks for the question!

So the lathe looks good and all and easy and affordable for a beginner. My question is Does it come with the chisels needed? or is it just the lathe and pieces for the lathe and you buy everything else separate?

Without a doubt the best video on the Rikon 70-100 from unboxed to basic setup with explanation and close up video! Thank you. One question........how do you rank the Rikon with their 5 year warranty as compared to customer service and ability to get the lathe repaired if a major malfunction occurs? I am looking at this lathe real hard for its simplicity and price for turning shaving brushes and I assume it is more than ample to handle such small projects.

+Michael S While I can't comment on what to expect from a customer experience from Rikon - I can tell you that I like the fact that Rikon does their design work and customer support here in the USA.

Thank you for your video.. very helpful! I am waiting for my Rikon..should be delivered today. I was hoping you could tell me the optimal speed (where I should put the belt) and what spindle index position it should be on for pen turning. I would appreciate any tips.. Thanks again!

Pen turning is done at a high speed. The beginning user should turn a pen at the highest speed he/she feels comfortable. ( I would turn at the fastest speed possible for the smoothest cut).
The speed setting diagram is under the cowl where the belts are adjusted. The diagram illustrates where to place the belt for the desired speed.
      Hope this helps.

The terms for the wheels for adjusting the belt and for the tool rest holder are pulleys and banjo respectfully. Also, when adjusting the belt tension on this style of lathe, since the headstock pulley has no rear support be careful not to place too much tension on the belt as that can actually affect your center axis ever so slightly. And down the road that will put more wear and tear on the spindle bearings.

I just got a chuck with a No. 2 spindle for my lathe (the exact same model!). How do I attach it? It doesn't seem to want to seat very well.

Hi, I'm interested in turning 20-24 inch platters. Do I have to buy a higher priced lathe just to accommodate that? Thanks for the information!

I like how the name plate on the lathe is crooked. Attention to details!
