All the hate came from my fellow eagles fans. But when the pick 3 trade happened, at the time i said we need to wait to see how it pans out to judge it...well we turned pick 3 and 67, a future 3rd, tom barrass and jack darling into liam baker, matt owies, bo allen, tom gross, luca grego, hamish davis plus the hawks fut 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Add jack graham and Im pretty bloody happy with that draft and trade period performance

I'm sorry, but that's not a sensible way to assess a trade. The fact that WC appear to have done well in the draft doesn't alter the fact that they traded pick 3 for unders and then paid overs for Baker. That's still true.

  • @JeffBurn-b1i

West Coast has a strong forward line, with Oscar Allen, Jake Waterman, Jamie Cripps, Liam Ryan and Matt Owies. Liam Baker adds to the midfield alongside Harley Reid and there's still Jeremy McGovern and Elliott Yeo as good senior players. If the Eagles can make Optus stadium a descent fortress, there's a chance of getting up around 10th on the ladder.

Good take on off field moves. Certainly seem to be moving in the right direction. A massive problem for the eagles is their wafl team is uncompetitive, so the young guys that are there, are getting smashed every week and we have been delisting the older fringe guys the last couple of years. Meaning the wafl team is very inexperienced, and they are not developing appropriately week to week. This leaves a big hole in their development, and has the potential to delay the progress you are expecting. Fingers crossed you are right ;)

    • @biggi3st3v3
      @biggi3st3v3 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Agreed, the wafl team is an issue. Would help if the wafl would actually let us recruit properly for it. Hopefully it gets better this year with the influx of talent hopefully pushing some senior eagles into it to help alleviate that issue

@ my hope too…but I have grave fears it will go backwards from last year 😬
We managed ok pre Covid - but I guess that was an afl premiership list without the massive injury issues. The wafl does need to come to the party at least a little…you are correct

    • @DonMoss-gw5tt

If the WAFL doesn't relax their ban on the participation of the Eagle reserves in the WAFL draft, they should join the VFL and then recruit the best WA under 18/19 youngsters (who failed to be drafted in the AFL draft) and the top WAFL players. Until the reserves receive the same draft benefits as Peel, they will continue to linger at the bottom which will be detrimental to the development of our youngsters.

There are two separate considerations here that shouldn't be conflated.
There's the trade period, which was poor. And then there's the draft haul, which looks pretty good. These are separate. The draft return doesn't make the poor trades better.
Splitting pick 3 would have been OK for the right price, but WC got unders in return. We even sweetened the deal for Carlton with later picks, which is absurd. And we then paid overs for Baker.
In my view, WC should have received an extra second-rounder or third-rounder in both legs of this trade. That would have made it acceptable. But WC came out of the trade period well short of that. The draft haul doesn't alter that.

  • @paulmartin3962
    @paulmartin3962 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

Well they will upset some teams an with their acquisition of Baker an Graham an good mature experience there. Bo Allen is a good pick from what I've heard. I think they could win 6 or 7. Richmond should look at getting a good mature player next year as Macca probably retire an meatball too as grasshopper needs too show he's stepped up that next gear this year.

Macca and Meat have 2 years left yet. Macca is fit as a fiddle and Meatball still racks up numbers and needs to co tribute whilst the 2 young Bullocks in Lalor and Smillie learn their trade. Worth keeping them both for sure. In saying that, dunno what their contracts are.

WC had the necessary pick in their natural 2nd rounder. If Richmond baulked at that, walk away. In every trade for a player WC do, they make the same mistake of committing to that player, regardless of cost. By doing this WC hamstring themselves in negotiations and shoot themselves in both feet.
Opposition clubs' eyes must light up when they hear WC are interested in one of their players, as they well know that WC are willing to hand over even their own daughters as part of any trade.

As a West Coast fan I was somewhat furious with the trade for Owies and Baker. Of course I did want and expect Baker to join the team but we could’ve made a better trade than moving from pick 3 to 16. I felt like we didn’t need Owies because we had other players like Long, Johnston, Jack Williams, Maric and Dewar who we needed to develop. However, I was happy with Bo Allan as our first pick, which I did kind of see coming. The only things we need is another key defender, and maybe young midfielders as Yeo, Kelly and Sheed are near the end of their careers. I do believe McQualter as head coach was the correct choice. His knowledge of attacking gameplay from the glory days at Richmond will certainly improve the team a lot. I think as long as the players play like a team they will win more games this year.

Owies is a good footballer who knows how to play HF and where to run. 30 goals in 2023 & 33 in 2024 is no fluke. He chases and tackles. He doesn't miss within 40 metres of goals. He's a good addition in the right age range.

The Eagles were planning to give pick 3 for two draft picks. It was likely that one would probably be Liam Baker but expected to be say pick 18 approx. What ended up was that the Eagles got Baker and Owies. Not sure about Owies but Baker was essential. It was indirectly tied into free agency deal to get Graham, as truth is that we wouldn't have got Baker without Graham and vice versa. I felt that deal almost breakeven. Definitely helps us in the short to mid term as the Eagles could fall into an abyss without experienced hard tackling defensive guys in the mid 20s. A few injuries to the experienced guys and then the Eagles would have been left with 21 year olds that lack a lot of talent apart from a handful. Getting those guys set the standard for the club and will help develop youngsters. The veterans will continue to go within the next 6-18 months. Experiencd guys need to support Hewitt Ginbey Reid types. Then Barrass left which could really cost the Eagles quite a few games. If McGovern also goes down the tall defence will be decimated. But the Eagles won on the Barrass deal definitely. So overall it was a good draft performance for the Eagles.

Midfield continues to be a massive concern. Key defenders also lack depth. Barrass gone. McGovern Jamieson H Edwards and Bazzo are all injury prone as key defenders and miss a lot of football. Shanahan could step up as a defender. But the Eagles now have had 4 good drafts in a row now. I reckon they need a few more. But they have 5 picks in the top 55 approx next year which is actually good for them.

Calling Bo Allan the equivalent of a pick 7 is way over the top, if he was worth pick 7 he wouldve been drafted at pick 7, or at least somewhere close, not pick 16. Most had Allan at the 9-12 area. Doesnt quite make up for the Baker deal.
Baker and Graham are good additions, no dramas there. We just got unders for the Baker trade and the pick 3 trade.
The actual thing that recovered the Eagles off-season to be a "win" was being able to slide back 1 spot from pick 15 to 16 to grab an extra pick for Tom Gross, essentially making the trade pick 3+63+68 for Allan+Baker+Gross+73. Getting Shanahan at 30 tipped it into "good offseason" areas.
Im happy with where the Eagles are at, theyre definitely not that far off. Ive been saying for a while now I believe the Eagles are 2 years behind the Hawks.
2026 is when the Eagles rise up the ladder, adding Warner will ensure that, the Eagles will be clear frontrunners for his services as much as Freo fans wont like to admit.

“Feel free to write as much as you’d like, mate, but at the end of the day, facts speak louder than anything else-it’s not just about opinions or hearsay. I sourced most of this information from the internet. A bit of research before commenting on the matter wouldn’t hurt.
Richmond had an abundance of first and second-round picks and selected a range of players that took many by surprise. That’s why we saw such significant changes in the draft order over the course of the few nights.”
Bo Allan was widely forecasted to be a top-10 draft pick for the 2024 AFL Draft, with many projections placing him around pick 7. He was considered the standout Western Australian prospect and one of the most talented players in his draft class. His consistent performances at both the WAFL level and the National Championships bolstered his reputation as an elite young talent. In 2024, Allan captained Western Australia’s Under-18 team during the National Championships, showcasing his leadership and on-field prowess. He averaged 20 disposals, 6 tackles, and 3.7 clearances per game throughout the tournament.
Despite earlier projections placing him in the top 10, Allan was ultimately selected by the West Coast Eagles with pick 16 in the 2024 AFL Draft. His selection is expected to bolster the Eagles’ lineup, bringing in a player with proven leadership and a strong track record at both junior and senior levels.

@@FoLlOwThEwHiTeRaBbIt1 You call him a likely top 10 pick, that just isnt entirely honest.
It was thought that Melbourne would have taken him at their second pick, which ended up being pick 11 as the earliest he would go.
Richmond were a chance to take him at their pick 12 or 14, never pick 7. They were always taking Smillie or Langford at pick 7.
Saints were never really in the market for Allan either. They wanted Travaglia and a pure midfielder like Smillie, Langford or Lindsay, but Tauru was the best available at their second pick.
There was the odd speculation that someone might take Allan earlier at pick 6 or 7 but that never had any facts behind it, it wasnt realistic.

the trade was and always will be absolute garbage and matt clarke should've been fired the next day. yes baker is a good player (*maybe* scrapes into the top 100 in the league?), yes bo allan looks like he could be something, yes owies is underrated. but you have to view it from our position. before reid and ginbey our last top 10 draft pick was gaff... baker would've been an unrestricted free agent next year. as in absolutely free. he could've walked over for nothing. that fact alone gave WCE a huge amount of leverage they did absolutely nothing with. yes richmond could've picked him up in the PSD, but baker could have set terms of a 1 year deal meaning he would walk out the year after for nothing anyway. now there is no world where i expect that to actually happen. but it is a little thing called leverage that should've greatly strengthen our negotiating position.
instead we hear that someone at the club made a fucking commitment to baker AND to richmond and then had to bend over backwards to make it happen.
14 alone for baker is overs. neal-bullen went for 28. we started the trade period with 23 and that i felt was overs, but i would've understood. instead some idiot **cough cough matt fucking clarke cough** had committed to getting his old club richmond a pick in the teens. the hawks knew this and tried to torpedo our plans to fuck us over in the barrass trade by sending 14 to carlton. the fact that we were obviously gearing up to get rid of barrass as a straight swap for baker still pisses me off (we needed PICKS). and then the clown show in charge obviously had zero back up plan so needed to trade pick fucking 3... but only after the owies sweetner (ugh. don't get me wrong i think owies is handy but the bloke was about to be delisted ffs. and for pyke to say he's a good pick "to lift standards on the training track and put pressure on the 22" still makes me want to puke) and WCE having to GIVE UP some late picks or our own to make it happen!
and to top it off we pick up allan, who looks good, but is of a very similar type to what we already have in spades in reid, hewett, ginbey and hall. what we were screaming out for is a silky accumulator and this was the perfect draft to snag one.
the only reason to ship out barrass is for picks. baker could wait a year for free or get him ONLY at a large discount. if we needed mature bodies that bad dip into free agency. USE TOP PICKS ON DRAFTEES. so while they drafted well that doesn't cover for the clusterfuck that was trade period.
and yes i am still absolutely seething over it lmao
