95 percent of the music is composed by the keyboardist, Tuomas. It was always his decision what to incorporate, which layers to try and where to go. The initial idea for Nightwish was to go for acoustic mood music, just acoustic guitar, singing, keyboards, and maybe some flute. After hearing the powerful operatic soprano of the first singer,Tarja, they decided to go for metal instead (Tuomas already had a background in playing keyboard for metal bands). Metal fans like me always knew there was better music outside the States. I stopped listening to rock radio in America back in the 1980s. I was buying import metal before thrash started in America and then in the 90s when metal was fading in America I dove into European metal even deeper. Started listening to Nightwish in 2001 and saw them live in 2004 during their first US tour.
Since this was Floor's debut (!!!!!) In the band, I like to think that when Emppu (guitar) is talking to Troy (pipes) he is saying something like: "look at her man! She is ON FIRE! She is born for this!"
Some older songs that you gotta try, if anything just to check out more of their repertoire: Nemo, Dark Chest of Wonders, Over the hills and far away, tenth man down, planet hell, seven days to the wolves, phantasmic, the phantom of the opera (with tarja), Amaranth, dead boys poem. Basically everything they do stands on it own.
When Thomas started the band he wanted to play “acoustic mood music” with a female voice. Jukka(drum)Emppu(guitar) and Sami(first bass player)all had a metal background so the transition from the mood music idea to metal just came naturally. And they have been evolved since then. Thanx a million for this great reaction👍👍👍
Your reactions are the best 👏 I like you guys 😁 Have to say...I fall from my chair every time you pause this song for the first time...I have the sound very loud and it crashes somehow 🤯🙉 and I never remember it 🙈
Since Stan seem to have a liking for Celtic influences in modern music, I would strongly suggest checking out Eluveitie (in particular Rebirth official music video) - they are a Swiss Folk-Death metal/rock band (the music and female vocalist are Folky, singing in gaelic, while the male vocalist and some of the guitars are Death metal-y) with a huge number of folk instruments (violin, flutes, bagpipes and even a Hurdy-gurdy) well blended in their songs (just as a different example of European metal/rock). Anyway, in relation to the question about Nightwish's music styles, when they started they were mainly Operatic metal, due to their first singer (Tarja) being a classically trained opera singer: they still incorporated themes and melodies from different music styles, but the overall impression/first association was always 'Opera with metal riffs' - one of the most iconic songs to exemplify that era of Nightwish is in my opinion their Phantom of the opera cover (check out the End of an era tour live video of that). However Tuomas (the keyboard player and main composer of all their music) freely admits that he picked up plenty of influences from other genres in time, in particular he liked epic movie scores (Pirates of the Caribbeans and similar) and started incorporating more symphonic/orchestral arrangements in their backtrack. That said Nightwish' latest albums tend to be Concept albums, where Tuomas set a mood/concept for the entire album and weaved a story/theme throughout the entire album, with specific verses/phrases recurring in different songs (this is most evident in their last album: Endless forms most beatiful, but it is perceptible also in their previous album, Immaginerium). That is partly why you feel they have so many different 'venues/styles' of song. Hope thathelps some; keep up the good work and cheers!
Ugh I love this performance so much. Great reaction guys! Say, if you are into the Celtic sound and haven’t heard Eluveitie I recommend checking them out with their song “Rebirth”. Folk Metal at its finest.
Since you asked about the cow skull and the show, the cow skull is the logo for the Wacken Open Air festival, which is a multi-day, multi-stage event in Wacken, Germany. During the 2013 event, the one you have been reacting to, over 130 bands played on 4 stages over 4 days. The majority of the bands were lesser known, although Nightwish came on the stage immediately after Alice Cooper on the last night of the event. Earlier in the day, bands such as Anthrax, Danzig, Lamb of God, etc, were on that same stage (Deep Purple, Rammstein, Motorhead, Tristania, Gojira, Sabaton, and Fear Factory were also at the festival). There were over 80,000 people at the concert.
Nightwish is slowly starting to catch on here in the States ..if you ask me we will be better off for it ..Jinjer as well being from the Ukraine is another band stoking the fires here in the states ..
Yeah I think reaction videos along with there loyal fans is away to introduce both bands to folks in the USA with out reaction videos I probably wouldn't have heard of either of the 2 of these great bands
If you guys want a softer celtic sound check out "The Islander". Marco the bassist sings this one. Try it live at tampere or even the studio video is beautiful. Or maybe "My Walden" from Tampere live. This will show you the softer side of Nightwish. You have only just begun boys!
remember that Tuomas said that their plan was to play music that would like to listen them selves. Their first singer (Tarja Turunen) happened to be classical trained singer so they kind of slipped to this symphonic metal. At Some point you should check out Phantom of the opera (End of an Era) to see Tarja. Their last album’s theme was evolution, universe etc. On that album Tuomas wanted them to sound more like the band, so there is not so much symphonic elements.
when the band started out they were going to be an accoustic band, when they'd heard the voice of their to be lead singer tarja during her audition symphonic metal would be born.
Another great reaction guy’s , now please take a side step to the band Eppica with “Kingdom of Heaven” live at the Zennit , the singer of this band is a friend of FLOOR , and has also a great voice . Then you go back to Nightwish for more fun and greatnes ha ha . 👩🏻🎤🎸❤️
The original singer only sang Opera. Troy on pipes didn't appear on anything with them until 2007. Became full member in 2013 after this tour along with Floor. The pipes have a bellows under his arm, instead of a pipe to his mouth, to fill the air bag.
Great reaction guys, I will leave others to answer your questions as I’ve only discovered them fairly recently. I’m thinking the poem and the pendulum at Wembley would be a good one to react to. The only thing I would say about that is to pause a few times during it like you have with this one. There have been copyright issues with it recently (not from Nightwish but by someone who has used a sample of it in their own song)
Actually, then started out as a ballad band. Then the hired the first singer who was a trained operatic singer. When she was fired, a singer was brought in that really didn't fit them, although she had a few songs that were written for her and they were OK. However, when Floor was hired it didn't take long for the fans to take to her vibrance and versatility. The band has adapted over the years and the music has evolved. Popular songs from the prior two singers are still sung by Floor. New songs written for Floor's incredible voice like "Yours is an Empty Hope" will become new favorites.
The steer skull is the logo for the Wacken Open Air Festival. When it occasionally shoots a flame out its snout, I think it is a great ddition to the Nightwish ambience. :)
Marco’s voice plus Floor = nice blend. Marco carried many a show on his own (I think). I love the band, I love ❤️ Floor, I love the staging. But I also love the audience. Does anyone else see them, their passion? They feel as that they are a part of this performance, and rightly so. They know the lyrics, they know the choruses, they know the (I know not the word but) the sub-choruses. They are wonderful. They deserve recognition. Not all audiences do. Look at her dance!
The nightwish songs y'all should check out are High Hopes live, The Phantom of the Opera live , The greatest show on Earth live, The islander live, and Everdream live🔥🔥🔥 keep up the good work
If you do Poet and the Pendulum live from wembley please read the story behind the song before hand. Knowing the sad story behind the song makes it even more powerful.
Since you seem to like this kinda epic style of music Nightwish does, and also the folky melodies incorporated, you should check out "Mirror Mirror" by Blind Guardian (preferably live from their "Imaginations Through the Looking Glass" concert). It's less symphonic and more pure power metal, but still kind of in the same vein. I think you'd enjoy it. :)
My favourite song from this concert is "Ghost River". Marko and Floor sing it together. BUT if you want to know some older stuff from Nighwish, I would recommend this: th-cam.com/video/8VgLKXD-BoY/w-d-xo.html It's with the original singer Tarja back in the day.. "The Phantom Of The Opera live from Helsinki" and after this concert they fired her.
Ah you choose Wacken in Germany again, AWESOME CONCERT😍 Pekka Kuusisto on violin is added with a concert somewhere in finland, they even had someone with a Harmonica on stage with them from the band "Enseferum" at a concert somewhere in Finland. But the quality of Wacken 2015 is onley neared be Wembley 2015 and Tampere 2015 😎 FUN FACT, somewhere in the song is a line: "The Voive of Mary Costa" She did the voice of Disneys Snowwhite in the Original Movie. Tuomas loves Disney 👀😁🐱👤 TRY "PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" with Tarja Turunen by Nightwish 👀😎🐱👤
Nightwish always contained folk elements in their music since they started. Check out their song Moondance from their '98 album. Its an instrumental with folk elements in it. I've been listening to Nightwish since '97. Being a metal head back then with barely an internet landscape like we have now, I had to discover new bands through metal magazines and especially Metal compilations. These compilations contained various bands you would never know of otherwise. The American music market only focus on what goes on in America. It's propaganda in the music scene. No help from radio stations or music TV. I had to special order a lot of music. In the mid 90's 90% of the metal I listened to was from outside the US and in my opinion the rest of the world had better metal to offer. I found them to be more musical for sure. There are positives and negatives with the internet. One of the positives is exposure to experiencing great music the rest of the world has to offer.
I love this band and thought I heard most of there stuff, then I found "another lane"! They do a cover/tribute of Pink Floydd's High Hopes...Wow, just Wow! Marco, the bassist, sings it and really displays his talent. PLEASE, PLEASE react to it!!! New subscriber here!! 😃
If you want to break into the next style layer of the Nightwish onion, then I recommend The Islander performance from the Tampere concert, or The Poet and the Pendulum from Wembley.
If your looking for really old school Nightwish song, here's "Bless the Child" th-cam.com/video/VTPXvE6o3LY/w-d-xo.html Also from Wacken 03! Original AND the live new one with floor are both awesome but this live version is just GOLD. Now that you got the folk line checked. :)
Great reaction to this great epic band guys. Now perhaps it's time to go back in time and hear their earlier stuff with their original singer Tarja Turunen. That will give you a better understanding of this band and just how much they've grown musically over the years. May I suggest Phantom of The Opera or Ever Dream (with Tarja).
Not sure if already answered: NW started out with Tuomas (keyboards/composing/lyrics), Emppu (guitar) and the original vocalist Tarja as a little band project they weren't sure would go anywhere -and it grew from there. So the Nightwish sound has evolved on the way, they didnt just pop out from ether with pipes and orchestras :D But according to interviews, Tuomas has always written the kind of music he wants. I feel he's a proof people really buy into genuity and passion, hence the loyal fanbase. To be honest I take Tuomas as one of the musical geniuses of our time. Cheers guys, thanks for vid!
They have just announced South America dates so keep your eyes open for North America dates you'll truly appreciate them if you can get to see them in 2020 on the basis of the new ALBUM Happy 😊 days
Okay, so i think you're ready for The Poet and the Pendulum live at Wembley 2015. Just a few things about this song, first try to search a bit of information about this, the reason behind this song and the reason behind the change of singers. Also you should try to react to a video with the lyrics. The song is a master piece and you should have all the information about the meaning of the lyrics that you can in order to feel the song in the right way, anyway, Floor will make it easy for you. Good reaction again guys.
Please React to Epica Consign to Oblivion Live @Zenith, Sabaton Carolus Rex Live @Woodstock Poland.... The 2 Bands will blow your Mind! Interesting Facts... The 2 Female Leadsingers of Nightwish and Epica are Best Friends... Floor Jansens Husband is the Drummer of Sabaton😉

Uilleann is the Irish word for "elbow"...and it rhymes with "chillen'" lol. You should see what Floor does with this song now...it's quite the workout :). Now it's time to check out the *other* Finnish musical genius, Mr. Jari Maenpaa & Wintersun. Sons of Winter and Stars live rehearsal at Sonic Pump Studios. BTW, Wintersun's drummer Kai is now an official member of Nightwish, having toured with them for the last 4 years.
I feel the same way about how America is losing out on some good music. Nightwish does tour in the US. I saw them over a year ago in Pittsburgh. They have another album coming out next year. Then they will be touring. If you are anywhere close you need to go see them. The only thing is in the US they do smaller venues and with our laws about pyros they don't have those in their shows. But they do have the backdrops and lights. I am happy just to see them live! The US fans are trying to get American people into Nightwish especially through reaction channels like yours. So keep up the good work. There are a lot of bands from Finland, Sweden, Germany and a lot of other countries. Like Within Temptation, Epica, Evergrey, Wintersun, Jinjer, are names of some of them......... :-)
I love your comment that the great musicians come from other continents.... Really love Nightwish and I hope you check on them some more (Yours is an empty hope). In another video I heard you speak of progressive rock. Did you ever listen to Dir en grey? Their singer has a range from low growls to high falsetto. They also have songs with so many layers, no easy listening though. Great songs are Vinushka th-cam.com/video/x8Jo2x3laXo/w-d-xo.html , Behind a vacant image, Chain repulsion.
For more talent, Europe has to offer try Schiller (band). In case Nightwish fans do know, there is a tiny link between Schiller and Nightwish. Thanks to Troy.
Uilleann pipes are Irish, just FYI. I'm Scottish so don't quote me on this, but "uilleann" means arm or elbow or something like that, because that's how it's played. Not to be confused with the Highland pipes which are blown with the mouth.
Yeah, the flaming bull's head or ram's head or whatever it is... is the standard logo for the Wacken (Vokken) venue. It has nothing to do with the band. You guys hit the nail on the head about we Americans missing out on this whole genre of great music because the "entertainment" corporations are focussed on bottom-drawer "talent" air-headed junk and they get to decide for us what they want us to hear. ..... In the early days of Nightwish when their singer was original founding member Tarja Turunen, their style was more heavily operatic metal, although they were still very diverse. They have just grown more sophisticated at it over time.
They've pretty much always been a band of many sounds. If I heard the story correctly, they were originally planning to be a country band, but Tarja Turunen their original female vocalist just had too big of a voice to restrict themselves in that way. I'm trying to remember, but I don't believe you've seen anything with her yet, have you? Maybe take a step back in time and see a cover they did way back when of The Phantom of the Opera with Tarja. Yes...THAT Phantom of the Opera. th-cam.com/video/9kjmjkKjXo8/w-d-xo.html I'm actually not trying to steer you away from Floor by the way, I just thought maybe you'd enjoy seeing a glimpse of the past with Nightwish. Tarja was pretty darn exceptional herself. Sometimes in order to fully appreciate where a band is today, it's good to see where they came from, right?🍓🤘👍💯
I can't believe that you guys haven't done The Poet and the Pendulum by Nightwish yet. It will take you on a journey, and thestory behind the song is heartbreaking.

Since this was Floor's debut (!!!!!) In the band, I like to think that when Emppu (guitar) is talking to Troy (pipes) he is saying something like: "look at her man! She is ON FIRE! She is born for this!"
It's great to follow your journey, to see how the two of you grow into this awesome band.
What a start for the day! No need coffee just watch B and S reaction.
7 Days To The Wolves live at Wembley is another amazing song!! Thanks for another great reaction!
Your reactions are the best 👏 I like you guys 😁
Have to say...I fall from my chair every time you pause this song for the first time...I have the sound very loud and it crashes somehow 🤯🙉 and I never remember it 🙈
Sorry, Eeva! I think we have a better sound setup going now! And thanks for the positive words :-)
Nightwish played Wembley Arena for the first time in 2017, 20 years since they formed.
How many bands have been getting gradually bigger like that?
There are great composers for every century. Tuomas Holopainen is clearly one of ours.
Your reactions are pretty cool. Please react Ever Dream. Marco and Floor are amazing!
I’m from Wisconsin USA and I discovered NightWish in 2010 from Pandora. When I heard Nemo. I was hooked and a fan from that song.
If you guys want a softer celtic sound check out "The Islander". Marco the bassist sings this one. Try it live at tampere or even the studio video is beautiful. Or maybe "My Walden" from Tampere live. This will show you the softer side of Nightwish. You have only just begun boys!
Poet and the pendulum live at Wembley is a must now! Also the band Epica performing Sancta terra live with Floor guest singing with them.
Pls react to Nightwish - My Walden (Live - Tampere)
What a voice Floor. She's beautiful
The fire cow is the offical symbol of Wacken Open Air Festival
Still my favorite song of theirs, has been since it came out. Glad you guys love it as well :)
Great job guys keep going! 👍👌
remember that Tuomas said that their plan was to play music that would like to listen them selves.
One other highly celtic, folk metal song from Nightwish is My Walden. Definitely check that one out too. You're guaranteed to dig it.
when the band started out they were going to be an accoustic band, when they'd heard the voice of their to be lead singer tarja during her audition symphonic metal would be born.
Please please please, Nightwish Greatest show on Earth
Great reaction and please...we want more. Greatest show on Earth is a must. But play it with lyrics please. There is a lot to that song.
And i would suggest that you do some reserch about what the song is about, it get a whole new meaning then.
Boromir meme:
"One simply does not compare Amy Lee to Floor Jansen."
I know that reference!
You got me in tears with this meme! 😂
An expensive show? Ha! Wait till you see the Greatest Show on Earth Live at Tampere 2015! (I gave you the link back in the Ghost Love Score video) :)
Completely different......Elan.....Endless Forms Most Beautiful......The Greatest Show on Earth (definitely Live Tempere)
The nightwish songs y'all should check out are High Hopes live, The Phantom of the Opera live , The greatest show on Earth live, The islander live, and Everdream live🔥🔥🔥 keep up the good work
She's My Sin - same concert. EPIC vocals!
If you do Poet and the Pendulum live from wembley please read the story behind the song before hand. Knowing the sad story behind the song makes it even more powerful.
This was beautiful to see. :)
Cow skull is the Logo of Wacken Open AIr W.O:A.
I'm Scottish anything with pipes gets my vote! Celtic warriors!
I enjoy watching ur reactions :)
Such an awesome song and performance. Bottle this up and put the antidepressant industry out of business!
Best band in the world! Proud to be finnish! Nightwish forever! Floor is so great singer...but so was the first singer Tarja, too! Check it out❤
If you want to see their original sound, opera metal lane, check Nightwish - Wishmaster end of an era live.
Yes! This is the Greatest band in the world!!!
Started out as more folk music, then rapidly evolved into the metal with Tarja.
'Last Ride of the Day' from this concert is the best.
One thing you notice subconsciously is how frecking tight this band plays. Always.
It's actually your 4th Nightwish reaction guys hehe. ( GLS Song of Myself Romanticide and Tears)
Haha!!! Thanks we do so many videos we lose count. We have so many request that we need to get to, but we are going to be doing some stuff on facebook to that is about amazing bands like night wish stay tuned
My second favorite song from them. My number one song is "Storytime" which is a more pop-ish sound.
Wacken Open Air is a summer festival. The horns in fire sometimes eject MORE fire.
The flamimg skull is a prop belonging to Wacken open air festival. It is a part of the metal stage decour.
The one thing I love about this video. Watch the guitarist and floor next to each other. He's 5'2. She's 6'5. Towers over him. Lmao.
It will take you on a journey, and thestory behind the song is heartbreaking.
great reaction. very interesting and different! :)
