Yes, Capitol Records originally asked for EXO. But because of Military Enlistment Sooman created another group with some english speaking members.
EXO could have easily dominated the world and won over even the English-speaking countries had they been promoted well years ago.

Okay so actually there are a lot of "stories" about what happened to EXO and why did Luhan & Tao & Kris left the group.
kris : He was the first person who leave EXO and SM entertainment, He was the main rapper and leader of EXO-M, he left in 2014 after Overdose, he filled a lawsuit against SM to terminate his contract, stating "Violation of human rights" as the main reason, he said that SM treated them as products, and expected them to do a lot, (and even baekhyun said in 2019 that even after debut even after growl's success SM didn't feed them well)
Luhan : He was the second member to leave, he was viasul, dancer and Main vocalist of EXO-M, he filled his own lawsuit against SM and said that it's because of health issues and that SM treated chinese members different than Korean members, he also left in 2014 after overdose
Tao : He was the last member to leave, he left after call me baby in 2015 he was lead rapper and dancer of EXO-M, he filled a lawsuit against SM and actually his father posted a letter on Weibo and said that Tao has received injuries but SM doesn't give him proper treatment (he even was seen on wheelchairs ... and went to america for treatment)
also SM filled their own counter lawsuit against all three members, SM won against Tao and came to a agreement with kris and Luhan, both will remain under SM till 2022, and the money they make will be splitted between them and Sm

Actually tao won all the lawsuits in China! Which is where it matters the most, since he works in China~ so the courts concluded that Tao doesnt have to pay anything to SM and SM cant do anything to "touch" Tao and his works at all, unless he were to promote in Korea and Japan. But since he doesn't so~ yesss Tao hasn't paid a cent to SM and yess this was all because he was able to show all proofs and yes SM won in korea which is logical, if you think about it. But not that matters really...

When EXO debuted they are just the monster rookies!!!! EXO really changed the industry of kpop. 1st kpop group to have a million physical album sold out after the 12 year drought. They broke the drought!!!! EXO is really powerful group of 12

Compared to other Chinese idols in other groups the reason why Lay can't actively promote in Korea with EXO is because he is a Youth Ambassador in China, meaning he has some political power in China, hence why he can't promote in Korea because of the political tension between the two countries.
As an SM Stan, and I'm pretty sure a lot of veteran kpop fans can back me up on this, EXO IS the original super group. Kpop was in chaos while SM was releasing all the EXO teasers.
History, one of the other song that made me break that replay button.
Kris left first in 2014, Luhan left later in 2014, Tao left in 2015. They all sued SM due to unfair contracts and circumstances. Kris was diagnosed with a heart condition I believe and Tao had an ankle injury that wasnt healing properly because they kept him on schedules. Everything beyond that is a mixture of facts and fan speculation that have been neither confirmed or denied by any parties involved.
At some point I'm gonna have to throw some KrisLuTao stuff into a stream for you though
Let's not forget Luhan was getting sick too with constant migraines that left him unable to perform. I still remember his last stage with EXO and Lay clinging to him all the time 😭

Kris and Tao had to go and see him just so he can have the courage cos it's M.U!!..he's an absolute fan he'll definitely regret it if he won't go.. he already cancelled 3 flights (his and all his staffs) prior to that. thanks to his brothers.. he is so happy in that trip. ^_^
What you said is the truest thing ever. EXO is the original super group. SM really hit the jackpot when they combined all of these 12 amazingly talented individuals into one group. It was a game changer.

I'm an nctzen and I agree with you. I also think that if SM promoted EXO properly (in Korea and abroad) they could get the huge popularity. People forgot how popular they were when they debuted, lot of k-popers that I met in real that time were their fans and it kinda annoyed me, I was not their fan, but now the same happened with BTS. But for EXO now I feel only respect and know they deserve a lot. But they don't get much attention, it's really surprising. Just how?!?!?!?! People, how can you sleep on EXO?

Umm, why are you making it seem like just because BTS is popular that EXO is no longer popular as well? They are still the #2 Kpop boy band. And they did come to America and have concerts. Not as much as in Asian countries, but those are easier for the members to get to. They are very busy as individuals so promoting is hard. And I don't know that EXO will be under SM forever. They sound like they have given some thought of striking out on their own. Or maybe they will be able to do their own thing at SM, like Suju does. Just because they aren't the top of the Kpop world doesn't make them any less talented or lovable. They are still the pride of EXO-L's and Korea. EXO will always be kings, and they have more than made their mark on history. They don't care about records, awards, or being busier than they already are. They just want to perform together, and for their fans. So just love them for what and who they are, and don't think they are washed up. I absolutely agree!!!!! SM really, really messed up with EXO 12. Unfortunately, looking at what's happened with NCT in the past, the agency still hasn't fully learned! Very frustrating.
SuperM, I think, is SM trying to patch up the way they mess up, especially with non Korean members. It's only my opinion of course!

Lay isn't promoting with EXO actively right now (and hasn't really been since Lotto) bc of political tension between South Korea and China. He's a Ambassador for the Communist Youth League of China for the region he is from (Changsha), and thus represents the country in a way.
There have been severe clashes between the two governments, especially in 2017 (you can look further into the THAAD issue if you want to), and there even was a ban on anything Korea-related in Chinese television for a while. So in an effort to keep both his own as well as EXO's image and not get attacked by the general public, he is absent from promotions at the moment. He also is focusing on solo work in both China and the US.
It was really big news to EXO-Ls when he was a part of the Tempo MV, with some lines in the Chinese Version. There have been numerous rumors about Lay leaving EXO, but he stated multiple times that 1) he really cherishes the members and has no intention to leave and 2) he wants to preserve the good reputation Chinese members of K-Pop groups have and doesn't want to bring his home country into a bad light, especially since the other three members that previously left EXO were the other members from China.
Kris and Luhan left in 2014, Tao in 2015, and all of them had filed lawsuits against SM Entertainment, claiming unfair treatment in comparison to the Korean members, unfair profit distribution and health problems. There is a lot of speculation about the real reasons for them leaving, many focusing on artistic freedom.
They all have solo careers now, with Kris being more focused on the American market, Luhan focused on both music and television and Tao mainly pursuing acting and television.
There is not a lot of official talk regarding the relationship those three have with the current EXO members, though Lay und Luhan have been seen leaving an awards ceremony together, and the three of them appear to be friends, mentioning each other in videos occasionally. As they are still under an exclusive contract with SM Entertainment until 2022 (Tao having failed his lawsuit, Luhan and Kris both having reached a settlement), there's quite the possibility that things are being kept quiet on purpose.
tl;dr: Lay can not promote with the rest of EXO because of difficult political relations between China and Korea; Kris, Luhan and Tao left in 2014/2015 due to various reasons.

Basically because exo-m promoted a lot in china and had a majority of chinese members, the group got huuuuge in china and those members got really popular really fast over there. Especially Kris and Luhan. Also China has money money. So their career could go much bigger by just being a solo artist/actor in china, seems like they also had some solid backups there. All three chinese members that left are now huge stars in china. Also if exo-ls would be honest, the connection between the members is much more solid now between the current members, whereas a lot of people could notice that there were some tensions when all 12 members were still in the group. So no, I can't say I miss those times. The 3 members that left have solid careers in their country, while the current exo members flourished under the current group formation, it's a win win situation. About Lay, he's the loyal type, so altough he has a better career in China, i guess he didn't want to create another scandal for the group, so he's still officially in the group but is focusing on his chinese solo promotions, and I really respect him for it. Seems like he has a really good relationship with the other members and hopefully he gets to promote with the guys now and then because the fans miss him a lot.
That's why I love EXO, Ben, their amazing , you know how long Suho waited this stars completed, 7 years.

The fact that they were 12 before and only 9 members remaining, made the entire EXO-L sad. I know how it felt as baby EXO-L especially.
Oh fyi, Xiumin is the most popular member in Korea actually. Almost everytime he did something, he made trend. He once bought bread (or beer ?) with a certain brand and fans made the product ran out in all stores. So that's why he got a nickname as trending fairy.

As you said, History" is a pre-debut track for EXO. It came out in 2012, a few weeks before "Mama," so it's more than 7 years old. It is their second pre-debut song. So, their "History" MV was supposed to be an introduction for EXO and it was meant to begin to establish their storyline and concept as a group. As aliens from Planet EXO, the members are about to be sent to Earth on a mission. "History" is thought to be about how EXO are still on Planet Exo and they are preparing to be sent to Earth. So that is why it has a very futuristic look and feel to it. There isn't a whole lot of story because it s pre-debut MV so this was meant to just introduce the members and establish their concept.
As you noticed in the EXO-K version of "History" you only saw the EXO-K members singing and in the middle of the song you see them flash to the EXO-M members, however, in the EXO-M version you see that the EXO-M members are the main characters in the story and they only show the EXO-K members briefly. This establishes how the two groups are separate and yet still are all part of one group which is EXO. Both versions of their MV may look the same on the surface, but the story is slightly different because it is being told from a different angle or different perspective in each version.
To understand the story in their "History" MV this is one time where it is helpful to look up the lyrics. The song is called "History" and in the lyrics they talk about making history. It's about failing at something and trying again to make it right. So, the theory is that in this part of the story EXO made some sort of unknown "big mistake" on their planet, so they have been sent to Earth to try and right their wrongs by trying to prevent the Red Force from causing a "big mistake" or prevent humanity from allowing a "big mistake" to happen on Earth. They are trying to prevent "History" from repeating itself. And they want to make "History" here on Earth. It establishes the whole reason why EXO are fighting against the Red Force and why they need to find the Tree of Life and restore peace. They can't let whatever happened on their planet happen again on Earth, etc.
However, just so you know, we didn't fully understand that was what the MV and song was trying to tell us, until several years later, after we had more context to go on after we had several other MV stories and more information. But that is why we say, if you want to try and follow EXO's story you have to pay attention to everything and you have to remember as much detail about everything you have ever seen and heard from EXO. Because although you might think you understand one piece of EXO's story, with every new release from EXO, we get a little more information, and, sometimes it helps to confirm what we thought to be true and sometimes it turns the whole theory on its head and makes us realize what was happening wasn't what we thought after all.
To see their dancing better, check out the dance practice for "History" the choreography is very unique. They have an EXO-K dance practice and an EXO-M dance practice. And it's one of their few choroegrpahies where the two groups are not combined because they were completely separate groups in this MV. The part of the dance where they put their hands in their pockets and shake their pants, I interpret as the nervousness and uncertainty that they are feeling as they are about to embark on this new journey as they prepare to go to Earth and also as a representation of the nerves and excitement they are feeling as they are about to debut. As you can see, even the choreography is designed to tell the story.

This song is what got me and my best friend into kpop. She showed me this song randomly and I went home and watched interviews and watched every MV they had out at the time. I loved the dancing and how great their vocals are. I've been into kpop nearly 5 years now.

I find EXO so fascinating, what I mean is that over time they have lost band members and even so each comeback their never disappointed us, they worked so hard for their fans and I am very grateful for that, thank you for reacting to their older videos I can´t wait for you to keep reacting to their music

Lay is an Ambassador in China and their laws have a Hallyu [Korean Wave] ban. and because of his political role it makes it extraordinarily dificult for him to participate in the group, which is an issue neither Jackson, Lucas or any of the other Chinese Idols, have.
LuHan & Kris sued for mistreatment, lesser pay, and other things. Tao's father sued for mistreatment [the company pushed him so hard the doctors said he may not be able to even walk anymore. he recovered]. All three are active artists in China under new labels.
