Ephemera: Fallen Leaves [EP1]

  • An exploration of ephemera through treasures found between the pages of an old book.
This may serve as the first in a series covering all manner of vulnerable media - with a tone and scope that starts out quite personal with this entry, but will not stay strictly so. It should be noted that for the purpose of this series, I am not defining ephemera as strictly paper ephemera - though this episode focuses largely on that. My view on ephemera is as a somewhat broader subject than most would expect, and likely not one accepted in library sciences. To me, whether I consider something ephemera has more to do with how likely it is to survive the press of time than what it’s made of, or whether it was hoped to be long lived. If there’s something that scarce few people have interest in keeping around, it’s probably not going to last long, even if it’s of tremendous importance to one or two individuals.
By the same token, even if something is broadly viewed as important, if it was built on a foundation of shifting sand it’s going to be swept up in the dune soon anyway.
These episodes, should they come to fruition at all, will not be frequent. Still, I’ve had a tentative outline in mind for a while, and hope to complete it.

Thanks! Honestly, it would be much more tedious (all though less pressure) to do if I weren't invested in the subject matter. It's better for me this way too.

Your lexicon, attention to detail and overall fascination with this 'dissection' was very infectious. This brief glimpse into another's life was an interesting journey, so thank you for taking us with you on it.

I'm glad you felt it worthwhile! Yeah, this sort of stuff stirs my imagination. There's something wonderful about an object with history, especially when it seems so eager to share it with you.

Glad you enjoy these on each of those levels, regardless of one being a weird side effect.

Appreciate your deliberation on the contents of these old books and the stories they hold. I believe the pressed plant in the book is a fern of some kind, not a yarrow. The dark dots on the leaflets are sporangia, the spots where spores are stored.

I'm glad it's of interest. Poring through this book's contents kind of enthralled me, so I immediately got attached to the idea of making this. The next part in this project will be very different, but still something I'm excited to tackle. It will also be a while before I get to it, with other videos between now and then. Some of those may also be adjacent to the main thread of this conversation though, because it's a topic lodged in my mind right now.
