I first came across sherds/shards as a kid watching "What in the World" on early 50's TV. So glad I just ran across your sherdnerds videos, and now I will say "sherds" and not "shards" after all these years of reading and not hearing the vocabulary of the archaeologist. For over 50 years I've been a potter specializing in miniature replicas of traditional and ancient pottery and have enjoyed my informal research on the subject. I feel as if I have now excavated my own archaeological treasures since discovering sherdnerds. Thanks so much! (And has everyone seen the old recordings of the "What in the World" programs? They were a product of Penn as well- and my first encounter with archaeology! )

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am a sherd nerd myself. I live in the Southeast very near the Savannah river. I have collect many of Stalling Island Punctate sherds and i was very excited to see them featured in your video. Many have been decorated by pressing a fingernail into the wet clay. I find absolutely thrilling to press my own finger nail into the decoration. In connects me to humans living in my neighborhood 6,000 years ago. SHERDS RULE !!!

Excellent introduction to the science of sherds (and shards!). The variety is interesting. Sherds that I have acquired may have no design, a painted design, a carved design, or a sculpted design (of a figure, e.g.). Pre-Columbian sherds (generally from Mayan regions, but occasionally from Mexico) more often are sculpted or painted. The sculpted sherds usually depict the head broken off a figure or the torso of the figure. These are apparently from some sort of magic curse put on an effigy of someone, and then the effigy's head is broken off in the ritual. Some of these objects are large and ornate, as opposed to the more common ritual sherds. Some are quite unusual and rare in sculptural form. It should be noted that there are a wealth of sherds from the ancient Mediterranean and Asia. Greek ostraca are particularly interesting, as they are often inscribed, and sometimes indicating who was to be ostracized.

Using the abbreviation, instead of the full term, is deeply offensive. Archeo-fascism.
    Great presentation!

in the field, everyone calls them sherds. there's actually an interesting etymology of each word, and it turns out, they come from the same root word. but yeah, they're sherds not shards.
