Some years back when i started teaching in a school there was totally chaos in the class.students not only made lot of noise but they had habit of roaming in the class. As I was new to this experience .at first I had no clue how to handle the situation,I just stopped telling them to keep quiet, I calmly sat on the chair, gave a look at the class and quietly made eye contact with each student of the class.within few moments shouting turned into murmuring which resulted into pindrop silence.all were looking and whispering at each other to keep quiet. This formula worked very well and was 90% sucessful, you know there are exceptional cases also.
Great method. I imagine making direct eye contact that way made each of them realise that you were there for everyone as an individual not just as a class. I like it 😁 thanks for sharing ❤️
I don't aggree on this unfortunately, being noisy doesn't mean being unproductive at all cases, in this case you should understand and inspect the feedbacks coming from your student...as a novice teacher I can tell that unless they feel comfy enough, they don't learn and they get a tendency of being silent even though they have a question to ask ...
@@leanneusher1001 Have you ever heard of productive pollution? Noise is always distracted. You can put that definition for sound. Productive sound vs distracted sound.
I love the "hold it up" idea, a little bit of feedback, guiding them into their next little push (without ever asking for"quiet"). I use the radial timer, a nice visual. Call and response: "Waterfall, shhhhhh", "Flat tyre, shhhhhh". Thanks for sharing your ideas.
Thanks for the tips! Great confidence boost too. It's great to be reminded that noise is okay. Born in the 70s, I grew up with having to be silent in class, so it's still hard to get my head around the fact that learning noise is okay. I let it happen, but it still never comfortably 'sits' with me. A call and response I had success with on a Year 4 class last week, was (call) "Flat tyre!"......(response) Shhhhhhhhhhhh.
Yup yup yup. A must watch. Nothing to add. Really. As a young teacher I was looking for absolute silent. Now, I'm doing group work more often, but I'm still not satisfied/used to the noise that it creates. I'll try to make them practise whispers so that they can realize what it's like. PS: I think I might be getting the Australian accent.
Absolutely agree with the count down. During task I use a small kitchen timer which also beeps with 10 minutes and 5 minutes to go. I moved away from the online timer, because I found the kids were distracted by the screen. I really love 'focus on the positive' - I'm working hard to do this better. Our school reward system (bubble points) helps as Class Dojo would. Students see you putting up the points, and then it motivates them in the right direction. Call and response - Waterfall....ssshhhhhhh; Hocus Pocus..... Everybody Focus!

I am not a " school teacher" but an adult trainer and at first was about to click on out of the video when you got talking about your own noise level which grab my attention. As I listened more I can definitely subtract much good tips and use them in the adult training sector so thank you.
If my class is VERY noisy or I have multiple classes (e.g. at an assembly), I say "clap twice if you can hear me". I usually get at least half the kids who hear me and clap which gets the attention of the other kids. I say it again with a different number and that usually gets everyone. If I have to do it a third time I become "disappointed 😒" 😂
Great tips! And you reminded me that I need to go look and purchase a small xylophone for my class. I've gone to professional development sessions where the presenter would use it. I always loved the sound and said I would get one; but still haven't lol.

@@Dina-ds8jd Hi Dina 😀 it makes it difficult if the school doesn't take a whole-school approach to behaviour management. I start doing some Auslan (obviously they know some beforehand). They all stop doing what they're doing so they can figure out what I'm saying. My class this year have been the noisiest bunch I've ever met 😂
Hello. My main constructive feedback that I always receive from my mentor is my language is not being delivered effectively in a lesson when I am teaching the kids. I have year twos for internship. My delivery of my lesson, the verbal part of it is just not clear at times and I seem to pause a lot. Has this ever been a problem for teachers? I feel like I'm honestly alone in this part of teaching....
No of course you're not alone! And the tricky part is that what will work for one class won't always work for another. It takes time to get to know them and what they respond best to. It would be very hard on an internship to know that in your short time there. I would be asking you mentor for key phrases or language that would be best to use for that particular class. Perhaps note down language your mentor teacher uses and attempt to replicate it for similar lessons/activities. See if you can adapt it to suit the focus of what you are teaching. If you can observe some other teachers in the school it will provide you with more examples as well. Pausing is good! It allows reception and response time for the kids. Making sure they are paying attention and absorbing what's going on. Don't stress it takes time ❤️

We try to have story time during circle time and we’ve been having a difficult time Amy ideas? We use the bell but they continue to run around
Hi Andrea! Thanks for watching ❤️ I would expect kids that age to want to run around all day hehe. I'm keen to know how your storytime is organised. Is it after outdoor play time or before? Do you use cues to help settle kids down for circle time like visuals, songs or actions?
I have my pupils lined up quietly outside before we start. I let them in in my terms because if you let them in their terms, they would be probably still chatty from their last subject class. It puts them to lukewarm mode. Instead of saying, Mary, dont talk to Hannah. What did I said, no talking while in line. I will say, Helen thank you so much for cooperating, for lining up quietly. You may go inside now.
I’m 12, and I do not know how it works in your school but the principals are more scary then your teachers because they have higher authority. Is this the way it is at your school? Just curious...
Wow thats a very big class! I hope some of my suggestions help. Perhaps music would be a good option for a class that size. Put on a song for 20 seconds and teach them that by the end of the music they should be be quiet - maybe tell them they have to do a dance pose at the end and you will pick the best one 😀

So can you suggest something?
I’m a pre school teacher for children ages 2-3 and have a small group of children who do not like to follow the rules they are very noisy and like to run around the class.

Hi from Turkey ...
Hi from Australia 🇦🇺
I’m 12, and I do not know how it works in your school but the principals are more scary then your teachers because they have higher authority. Is this the way it is at your school? Just curious...
Why am I watching this

The clapping didn't work for me. They didn't even hear it. Other great ideas tho!
I know another teacher that uses a gong. An actual gong! It's so cool! Hehe thanks for the positive feedback I appreciate it ❤️

I have 60 pupils in each class...... how i can manage the noise in my classes...... help me please....
Wow thats a very big class! I hope some of my suggestions help. Perhaps music would be a good option for a class that size. Put on a song for 20 seconds and teach them that by the end of the music they should be be quiet - maybe tell them they have to do a dance pose at the end and you will pick the best one 😀
Farah Batata Rob Pelvin's channel is great saver. Also check on Smartatmath channel. She is a math teacher but also covers proven tips to classroom management
