    I have not tried it myself but i have been told a way to correct clay soil if you cant get your hands on cheap compost is to plant every 10 or 20cm apart a daikon radish. Saturate the garden in daikon radishes. Those grow deep and break the clay up. Then when grown kill them off and they all turn into compost. You could rotavate them in. You end up with a lot of organic material in the soil and the soil breaks up deep

    Really great demo video - mostly because it really shows how it really is in most gardens. Far superior in production value too compared to many pro commercial videos - with good cutaways and close up details of relevant elements. Simple concise and informative narration too. But regardless it really did the job - it really did help! I have watched so many videos and been so disappointed but this was excellent. Thank you :-)

    Woodchips in your backyard may help with flooding. The fungi will consume the the wood chips and break up the compaction in the soil creating soil structure that will act as a sponge when it rains.

    i have the same type of soil, and the same tiller, to get the tines of the tiller to go deeper i took off the wheel/wheels, and made the drag bar longer to go deeper and that brought the handles back up also, i still have to make 2 and sometimes 3 passes to break up my heavy compacted soil. all organic, no chems at all, compost only, bumper crops. canning, drying, and freeze drying most everything.

      In the UK, you can pick up 60 litre bags for the equivalent of $2 each at this time of year (mid October) at all the supermarkets, I don't know how that compares to a truckload for $17 exactly but it's still pretty cheap. Is it not the same in the USA? (They even come with a small amount of added plant fertilisers mixed in to give an extra boost).

    We have very similar soil. When we first got our house, the soil in the back was so bad that when I tried wetting the soil down (hot dry summer in Utah), the water ran right off.
    To amend even deeper, we've also been using a broadfork. That gets us at least a foot down. Then I turn in organic matter and mineral amendments, especially sulfur. We've gone to our municipal dump for compost too.
    After a few years, all the work has really made a difference.

  • @armanflint
    @armanflint 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This is okay for quick crops. I like that you used the sources around you instead of buying big box store amendments.
    The 8" depth is okay + a 8" rise, It's plenty of room to grow what you want.
    Where the tiller comes in handy, is breaking up the hardpan that is a few inches deeper than you tilled in the video. It is packed full of minerals and keeps water from draining deeper into the earth. It is probably best to hit that with fork before you till. (If you decide to go deeper).

    • @BenHuttash
      @BenHuttash  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the advice. I'll go deeper next time. Now a few years after this video was made the yard has a much faster absorption rate of water. It still floods but only says flooded for a day and a half instead of the two weeks it used to.

      maz 90 I am not in the uk, but I know a bunch of horse people that have piles and piles of horse manure that's sat a long time naturally composting. I usually can stop by and fire up their tractor and load my pickup. I'm sure there are livestock farmers there willing to hook you up. compost is just a combo of carbon and green. this horse bedding is mostly saw dust mixed with horse poo which is the green. good quality stuff. chicken farms would be good as well. I use my small amount of home made compost in my planter boxes and the manure in my garden beds.

Perhaps next time you would consider getting a truckload of manure from local horse stables or similar. It's excellent stuff and would give your project 5 stars. Best to be eco... becuase it's healthier and better for you, the birds/bees and gives less to 'the man'.

    I'd make raised beds with the bottom at ground level as the trench you are digging with the rototiller will fill up with water during the next flood and because the surrounding soil is still solid, it will not drain away, or the water on the surrounding ground will drain into you newly composted trench making the slightest rain another root rotting flood in the trench!
