    Thank you soooooo much. I am determined to be accepted into Stanford. You have been so helpful and hopeful, even if I might not get in, who knows, what matters is where my heart and mind is, the rest will take care if itself. I will work hard, whatever happens. You're the best!

      TBH my school and other inter-city public schools don't talk about getting into college beyond 'hey- for those who are thinking about going to college - take the sat's, and there is a thing called the common app that exists that you should probably check out' - I did my own research online and talked with people via the internet and various internships, conferences, symposiums, and hackathons to learn the things that I mentioned in this video so that I knew what to highlight in my app to be accepted into colleges that lied beyond the expectations of my community..... I was hoping through this video that I might help make this path to a competitive app less tumultuous for those coming from communities like mine that don't have a lot of college preparatory resources.

    I would love to get into Stanford I'm currently a freshman I have been playing football for most of my life sports in general just like basketball and baseball but football is my true passion of course getting into the NFL is a very narrow chance but I'll try my hardest I have great grades honors classes my school only offers two AP classes as a freshman a computer science class and a history class which I am currently taking my semester is about to end in a week or two and I have all A's except for my Computer science class which is an Ap course so it's technically an A

    • @destiny236231
      @destiny236231 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't worry if your school doesn't offer that many AP classes, my school only offers 1 (it's a weird school, but it's still a good school). What matters is that you challenge yourself with the curriculum your school provides. So if you take the two AP classes and the honors classes the admissions people will see you challenged yourself in the way you could.

    How do you find out the value of the school for the year (like how you said volunteering)? Or is it just a commonly carried on value?

    • @shituck4963
      @shituck4963  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Typically it's just a commonly carried value - although you could always ask uperclassmen (ie, current freshmen and sophmores) what they highlight to get a general trend because I don't think it differs TOO much year to year (I think), and look on forums on the internet

  • @DarkRevos

      @shituck4963  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks :) and I took Algebra 2 Freshman Year, Pre-Calc/Trig Sophmore Year, AB Calculus Junior Year, and BC Calculus Senior Year (Honors or AP for all of the classes - I also took Algebra 1 in 7th grade and Geometry in 8th grade as a part of my district's gifted program)

    Thank you for making this video! I do debate too :) Just curious, what events did you compete in, and did you go to nationals and/or the TOC?

    • @shituck4963
      @shituck4963  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So I did the program through the National Speech and Debate Association (formerly the National Forensics League) so the big thing was nationals which I qualified for when I was an upperclassman but was never able to actually go because of cost + internship. But I did basically all of the events offered in Indiana at some point. My main was probably Public Forum, but I also did a lot of Lincoln Douglass, Congress, and on the speech side Extemp and Impromptu.

      In the nation? No, I never ended up even going to nationals because of my internships (but probably wouldn't have ever cracked top 10 anyway) - however I did add national tournament qualifier to my application :)

    Hey Shi,
    Thank you so much for this helpful video. I am currently a sophomore in High school. My grades are ok, I got around 10 B's and 2 A's my freshman year, and last semester as a sophomore, I got 5 A's and 2 B's, and this semester I am on track for straight A's. I have been taking all honors/AP. I'm kind of worried my freshmen year will mess up my chances, because my EC's are really good(Just published a psychology paper & National recognition for poetry and numerous publications & Captain of table tennis team & President of Anthropology Club & Co-chairman of a teen help program). So my question is, do you think my grades will be the reason that I don't get into Stanford, even if I continue to get straight A's. My GPA after first semester senior year will be 3.7 UW and 4.4 W
    Thanks for the help.

      I know you commented this months ago, but from what I've heard, colleges don't pay as much attention to your freshman year as they do to your sophomore and junior year. So just go all in for junior year and strive for all A's if you can! Keep up your extracurriculars too, those are very very important!! :)

    • @remiakindele489
      @remiakindele489 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If anything, your growth from freshman to junior year is a REALLY good sign and as long as the rest of your application shapes out to be unique and impressive, you can definitely have a chance! While the majority may have better grades, remember that this isn't everybody and admissions officers look at everything to round out an applicant.

    well, its interesting for me to see a space enthusiast becoming a part of Stanford. I took a look at the Astrophysics department of the university, and it turns out that they do not provide an option for doing a major in Astrophysics! I don't know, I felt a little disappointed seeing one of the world's top ranked university NOT providing a major in a subject as obvious as Astrophysics! Can you please elaborate a little bit about your interests, because, interpreting from your background, your fields of interests seem really similar to mine, but still, you somehow convinced yourself to become a part of a unit which does not, obviously, has much interest in the field that you aspire.

      I'm actually an astronomy/astrophysics minor, I was an engineering physics major and can speak insanely highly about the stanford physics program (granted now I've switched to electrical engineering for a major but the sentiment is still there) - I think the reasoning is so u don't get pigeonholed in undergrad and don't get to explore the many sides of physics before choosing specifically astrophysics (but they do have quite a few well taught astro and observatory classes) also I can't speak highly enough about the stanford student space initiative (basically completely student run) where as a sophomore I'm a team lead of their satellites team, which is actually launching one if our satellites next year which has an onboard optical communication experiment, and we're delving into star tracking as a part of our next mission, and all of this involves heavy physics and astrophysics, its just more on the applied side (Altho again stanford classes and labs [which are really easy to get research in - like I worked in Stanford's branch of ligo last year] are fantastic and offer a lot of theory options if u get into that)

    • @marybob6947

      Slytherclaw Gal yes and it'll look good but it takes up a lot of time. and some times it gets in the way of other extracurriclers

    • @kailia9912
      @kailia9912 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As someone who did band and sports, it is a large time commitment. If you are just going to do it for an extracurricular don't do it. You should join a sport or at least try, usually at the beginning of a season practice is open and you can try the sport out. There are usually tons of girls in the same place as you who know nothing about the sport so you won't be the only new player. As a waterpolo player I personally think you should join waterpolo because it is an awesome and amazing sport.

    • @remiakindele489
      @remiakindele489 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can do anything, but if it's going to take up a lot of time, make sure that time counts for something. That means going out for leadership positions in band or taking advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Even incorporating different extracurriculars with band can make your high school band experience stand out! And that's what a lot of these colleges are looking for, someone who stands out, no matter what their niche is

    • @ananyaupadhya1974
      @ananyaupadhya1974 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I've seen, unless your band is in a very high position in competitions or some such, bands or any sports for that matter, done at only school level, don't mean anything unless YOU as an individual have done something unique within as a leader.

    • @shituck4963

      I know quite a few students - especially international students - who are starting freshman year and are anywhere between 19-21, and apparently there are freshmen who are veterans too, so I don't think age is a barrier

      I joined my high school team and went to competitions - if you're in high school and you're interested you should look into the National Speech and Debate Association and maybe start a team with the support of an English teacher #showLeadership or there's also students who compete without a school sometimes too (ie, homeschool kids)

      yeah, letters from teachers are required, but there are avenues to get around that, especially if you are homeschooled or something. everybody cannot get straight As in everything. some are just gifted and extremely smart. anybody cannot get As in all subjects even if they try very hard there's certain cources that people just cannot do well in for example, trig and calculus, physics AP calculus chemistry there are cources that are just very difficult that everyone can't do.

    I liked this video, but so far it seems that "normal" (and getting in to top schools) requires being from another country, of color, gay/bisexual, or perhaps rich enough to build a new library at the school?
