SGU was good SF (and I eventually grew to kinda like it) but it wasn’t SG, and lacked the humor which made SG beloved. If I want dark SF (not my usual preference) I’ll rewatch BSG reboot which they tried to copy.
While cancelling SG: U was a mistake I wouldn't cry about it. But cancellation of"Firefly" and "Terminator: Sarah Chronicles" definitely *was* a crime against humanity.
Farscape's cancellation was a sudden emotional gut punch that still hurts today. That was such a fun and unique show that they could've done a great deal more with it for at least a few more seasons. And it should also serve as the original cautionary tale for writers and producers working for SyFy. NEVER end your seasons on cliffhangers, no matter how big your show may seem to be for the network. Back when SyFy was the SciFi Channel (still a stupid name change), Farscape was their OG original series and it was their biggest, at least until they picked up Stargate SG-1 from syndication and decided to focus most of their originals budget on that franchise instead. And even that show and it's two spinoffs were all eventually cut short by SyFy rather than allow the writers to give their stories proper conclusions. In fact, I don't think SyFy has ever allowed one of their originals to last more than five seasons on their network (I know SG-1 has 10 seasons overall but only 6 through 10 were made by SyFy). No wonder Ronald D Moore decided to give his Battlestar Galactica reboot a definitive ending with season 4. He probably realized that SyFy would kill it regardless if he dragged it out much longer. For a network that's supposed to be all about science fiction and its adjacent genres, SyFy really has a knack for spitting in the faces of science fiction fans.
Yes. Farscape is my favorite SciFi show. I watched the original airing. And I still screamed at my TV at the season 4 cliffhanger even though i knew it was coming. Thank God for the Peacekeeper Wars.
Anyone here remember the petition to keep Farscape on the air? I do! 😢 I still don't watch the Scifi channel over their nasty habit of canceling shows without ending them!
Fox cancelled Dark Angel because the didn't want to pay for two sci fi shows at the same time and then show the replace with was firefly and we all know what happen then
I heard that they cancelled it because of 9/11, since the premise of the show was that the U.S. had become a third world country due to a terrorist attack, and Fox thought that would reflect poorly on their network.
Still can’t forgive how my mother happily introduced me to Firefly as her favorite show and gave me her dvd box set to watch. Happily I came back to her for season 2 in which she informed there was none, that the show had been cancelled after season 1 for YEARS, and instead handed me Serenity
They did do some movies to tie up the storyline. Especially the nagging question, "Why didn't the aliens send anyone to find out what happened to the slave ship?"
The best TV series ever was EUReKA. It had sci-fi, real science, romance, mystery, humor, and so much more. They were given the go-ahead for a 6th season, but when they finished filming season 5, Syfy (the network of wormholes) cancelled EUReKA. They did give them 1 more episode to wrap up the series, and the exec producer (in only 3 days) wrote an excellent episode, using the ideas that he had planned for the 6th season.

Absolutely loved Flash Forward. I was very excited for the premier; I still remember being disappointed when I heard about it's cancellation. Damn to get nostalgic for "appointment TV" from time to time.
You missed Caprica, the one and a half season Prequel to Battlestar Galactica. I think they had a problem holding onto BSG viewers because there weren't any space battles. It was 80% SciFi Thriller and 20% SciFi Action Flick, which was about opposite of BSG.
Firefly, quite an obvious choice, based on quality of the work and how poorly Fox Network handled the promotion and scheduling of the show. This is a Gem!
You did my favourite Sci Fi show justice by making it number 1, I watched it when it was broadcast and it was amazing. I still love it, watching it again every 3 or 4 years. Not as good, but an honourable mention certainly would have been Andromeda!
I want to give a shout out to _Odyssey 5,_ which should definitely also be on this list. It's a little too obscure to really make it onto any of these lists, but anyone who's seen even a couple of episodes usually gets hooked... and then it's just over, and on a cliffhanger to boot. But the premise of 5 astronauts, who watch the Earth get destroyed, then get shot back five years in the past, and given a second chance to prevent it from happening... just too delicious to resist. Would have loved to see it get the ending it deserved.
If you saw the cliffhanger ending of season 4 of Farscape, you will get it. Them wrapping it up with a mini series a few years later, does make it debatable though. I watched both, and both were good choices for number 1.
Usual Suspects and Flash Forward were outstanding. Sawyer's novel of Flash Forward doesn't give insight into how the series might have gone, even though he was involved. I'd love to know what was planned. Also a recent one, Debris, had a great premise (based on Roadside Picnic, a Russian Sci-Fi novel).
I loved the Dark Angel series, but it was stopped just as every episode was becoming a "why can't we all just get along" trope. Better to stop it when they did, than to drag it out
Of all the series I've watched (and often rewatched), the cancellations of Firefly and Farscape caught me off-guard the most. Other shows that come to mind are indeed SG-U, Space Above and Beyond, Jericho and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. However, I am also missing a couple of titles here; Earth 2 for instance left me wanting for more, as did Revolution, Touch and Believe.

Agree 💯% regarding Dark Angel: it had a good premise and a likable heroine in Jessica Alba's Max. It deserved a longer run. Fave Sci Fi series- Classic Star Trek 🖖.
Hard to beat Babylon 5 when considering great sci-fi series. I would have to add The Mandalorian, Space: Above and Beyond, and Stargate SG-1. Too many of the so-called sci-fi series and movies are more horror stories than actual sci-fi. For me, FarScape and Lexx started out strong and then devolved into silly, weird episodes. And Asoka, for all the hype, seemed to consist of characters standing around with deep introspective looks leading to the worst ending since GOT. Why couldn't they have brought the energy and interest we saw when Asoka was reintroduced in the Mandalorian?
We actually *do* know where Dark Angel's story went after the show ended, because the show designers hired an author to write novels to wrap up the storylines. Dark Angel is my favorite TV show of all time, so I read those books a long time ago. They did a great job at describing the characters and using dialogue that they would have used if it were more show, but they still managed to end in a cliffhanger and clearly intended to write at least one more book than was actually written.
More accurately described as Speculative Fiction than as Science Fiction, Wonderfalls and it's spiritual sibling Pushing Daisies each featured a protagonist trying to live her/his life, rather than being used as a precision tool of the universe using their mysterious and unexplained powers to right wrongs often against their will and always at considerable risk to themselves. Wonderfalls was a one and done, but the writers had synopses for about 100 episodes according to the DVD commentary. Pushing Daisies was apparently a victim of a writers strike which caused them to air two half seasons in the winter/spring of two consecutive years.
Dark Matter, Killjoys, Earth 2, Jake 2.0, APB, and there were a few instances of TV pilots that weren't greenlit but wound up as TV movies instead, hinting at the lost potential: Borealis, Rewind and Virtuality.
Jericho might be my favorite TV series. The realistic perspective, plausible scenario, smoldering intensity throughout, with a wonderful attention to detail with character and story development made it huge! *Nuts* to CBS for its cancelation!
I am afraid to watch sci-fi shows anymore. 40 years of watching one, falling in love with it, and being cancelled, often after a season ending cliffhanger, has left me not wanting to suffer that anymore. Now I wait for a show to end, and watch the entire series, if it ended well.
My personal list would have included firefly, dark angel, space above and beyond, and Sarah Connor. Glad they are all recognized now for how good they were.
Journeyman (2007), with just one season, should definitely be on this list. As well as Dark Matter (2015), three seasons but ending on a cliffhanger. Both had so much more potential than some of the crap that had too many seasons.
So many series I loved, ended too soon. Firefly, Dark Angel, Space, Above and Beyond, Sarah Connor, SGU, Jericho, Farscape. I start to fear liking a series.
My favorites in this vid: Terminator: TSCC Space: Above and Beyond Dark Angel Firefly Despite being a huge Stargate (SG1 & SGA) fan, I couldn't quite get behind SGU, as I didn't like the departure from the norm, even if I did try. It was too weird and dark for me, and lacked the small team goodness I loved so much from the other shows.
Firefly cancellation was a gut punch when it got cancelled. I would also add Revolution to the list, it was getting really interesting towards the end of the second season but got cancelled without any explanation of how the power got cut off. As a stretch I'd also throw in Manifest, although it had 4 seasons they dragged it out to explain the disappearance then got cancelled.
The cancellation of Stargate Universe and Firefly are crimes against the humanity!
SGU was good SF (and I eventually grew to kinda like it) but it wasn’t SG, and lacked the humor which made SG beloved. If I want dark SF (not my usual preference) I’ll rewatch BSG reboot which they tried to copy.

And Asoka, for all the hype, seemed to consist of characters standing around with deep introspective looks leading to the worst ending since GOT. Why couldn't they have brought the energy and interest we saw when Asoka was reintroduced in the Mandalorian?
The Dark Angel video game was EVERYTHING to me.
Please bring back Raised by Wolves Ridley. Her story must have an ending.
Dark Angel was an amazing show, my fucking childhood. Still watch the first two seasons every now and than
Putting anything above Firefly almost makes your list worthless. That being said, you did a great job putting this together. Thank you!
When Dark Angel was taken off the air, I gave up on TV and never went back. Dvd sets are a different animal.....
How on earth have you missed Quantum Leap (the original) from this list?! 🙄😒
It had 5 full seasons
but no ending
@@marcinkusmierzak991 that's a different category.
The Alliance conspired to have Firefly canceled. They didn't want the signal to get out...
If you know, you know.
Dark Matter, Killjoys, Earth 2, Jake 2.0, APB, and there were a few instances of TV pilots that weren't greenlit but wound up as TV movies instead, hinting at the lost potential: Borealis, Rewind and Virtuality.
You forgot one. Terra Nova. It starred Jason O'Mara and Stephen Lang.
My favorite eries was 7 Days. Another series cut to soon was Terra Nova.
Jericho might be my favorite TV series. The realistic perspective, plausible scenario, smoldering intensity throughout, with a wonderful attention to detail with character and story development made it huge! *Nuts* to CBS for its cancelation!
Thanks For this ❤❤❤
Probe (1988 TV series) was one of my absolute favorites. There were only eight episodes. I would have included on this list
Dollhouse ‘ dark angel firefly’
I absolutely hate TV companies that cancel shows without a resolving episode. Thank you Joss Wheedon for making Serenity. 👍
Journeyman (2007), with just one season, should definitely be on this list. As well as Dark Matter (2015), three seasons but ending on a cliffhanger. Both had so much more potential than some of the crap that had too many seasons.
How about Day 5? *Great* psy-fi thriller!!
So many series I loved, ended too soon. Firefly, Dark Angel, Space, Above and Beyond, Sarah Connor, SGU, Jericho, Farscape. I start to fear liking a series.
My favorites in this vid:
Terminator: TSCC
Space: Above and Beyond
Dark Angel
Firefly
Despite being a huge Stargate (SG1 & SGA) fan, I couldn't quite get behind SGU, as I didn't like the departure from the norm, even if I did try.
Three shows Id want to come back are:
Farscape
Stargate Universe
Sanctuary
I love all three of these shows and wish they continued on for longer
