- With tens of thousands of customers still without power this morning, there is a growing feeling from some that rural Ireland was left abandoned in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn.
Marie Sherlock (Labour), Shane Moynihan (Fianna Fáil), and Christina Finn (The Journal), join Pat Kenny in studio to discuss the topic.

Goverment not interested in looking after our own anymore
More money out of d invaders
We're the wrong nationality now in our own country, don't depend on this govt to help if at all possible
@@davekenna9669 wow. able to twist literally ANY topic into mouthing off about immigrants.
If you vote for clowns, don't be surprised when you end up at the circus...
The government were shouting at each other in the dail for two days and the whole world knew that there was a type category 3 hurricane heading towards ireland 5 days before it hit.
Ireland has been abandoned a long time ago never mind rual ireland
Clicked in to say this exactly.
It feels like the government actively hates people living outside Dublin. Nothing works.
You said it.
Kenny a mouthpiece for government
Lame Stream Media is a mouthpiece for the Gov.
The bike shed and the wall hold their own when thousands are without electricity. Theres no debate. Its abandonment.
Maybe the solution for rural Ireland is to change building requirements to allow new houses to have a backup fireplace to heat their homes if the power is cut for long periods of time. This storm and its effects have proven that the new regulations to not allow a fireplace in a home is ridiculous in rural Ireland as some poor people have been living with no electricity during the coldest time of the year and left vulnerable. Shame on the government for not allowing something as simple as a fireplace to be put into a home to help heat the residents. We live in a damp climate and it doesn't make sense to not allow a fire to heat and dry out a house. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that fireplaces are essential in the climate and landscape of Ireland. They have been heating homes this way for thousands of years on this Island why change it and leave people vulnerable like this. A disgrace
It may be necessary to build, bunker type living space, with steel and concrete, as winds may exceed 200 km. as was experience in North Atlantic. The Solid Oxide Fuel Cell creates electricity at source and could be funded similar to heat pumps and other technology as part of sustainability. The Solid Oxide Fuel Cell uses natural gas and is efficient. A basic kiln using waste wood can produce gas if in isolated areas, also Bio char that enriches the soil.
Of course they were abandoned. They were left alone to suffer while the idiots in the Dail ran off on holidays for 2 weeks.
meanwhile our foreign friend need new jackets pat
Dont forget a hotel room paid by the state for them to keep there nice new jackets safe
Government got plenty of notice , they did nothing , nobody cares if it doesn't effect them , all towns villages outside County Dublin , they do not care . That was always the way.
Sit back there lads & lassies enjoy you're comforts while it lasts , nobody will come to help any of us .
Infrastructure is a joke , no councils out clearing out ground drains , tree cutting , power lines the wooden poles some are rotten . Country areas always left behind .
Disgraceful .
@@dawnburke2756 out of curiosity, what do you propose they could have done to prepare in the timeframe the storm was first predicted?
@@dawnburke2756 down in Cobh, the Tidy Town volunteers do a lot of the work even clearing up town around the drains.
@annacournane5442 did ever hear of prevention being better than a cure. Drain clearing and tree removal/ maintenance should just be done as a matter of course. Common sense should be used. Plenty of money in the country for it. Use it to look after our own people, not the fakugees. We are paying 1st World taxes and getting 3rd World services, we shouldn't be accepting it as hardworking taxpayers
Are you serious? The world has been aware of global warming for the past 60/70 years. @@annacournane5442
Thats right, Pat, dont you dare blame those politicians you are paid well by them to stand up for all the loonies in the Dail.
Rural Ireland was forgotten. This government was not prepared and cared little about the rural person,
The government isn't responsible for everything in your life but if they mandate that new builds can't have wood stoves, fireplaces or natural gas and everything is on electricity and then tell you to work it out when the power fails, they should have to answer. I live in Mayo in a house that fits their plan as well as solar panels but without electricity the invertor doesn't work so no lights, heat or use of water for four days. We also do not have cable or internet infrastructure in this are yet so hard to keep in contact when the cell towers are out and I can hear the planes from Knock coming and going so I am not in the hinterlands.
Absolutely yes it was and still is failing rural Ireland! A week on and still no power here nor have i seen any leadership from the so called government off on their holidays
Maybe Pat Kenny wouldn't mind donating a generator for everyone in the audience out his own pocket if there so cheap
Rural Ireland voted for them in their droves.
Why,is the real question.
@ianmcgauley8460 NO WE DIDN'T, everybody is asking how the same rogue government got in, AGAIN, was it RIGGED???? We did NOT vote for this ROGUE GOVERNMENT, please get your facts straight, please!
💯. You ask why??? Lol. No why. You have you're answer. Ignorance trying to be cool and green and virtuous lol🙄😂😂😂😂
Misinformstion : MET Eireann have NOT said that storms would increase by 20%. I have reported this but no action has been taken strangely enough.
The Irish tax payer funded the purchase of 11 massive Diesel powered generators in 2023, from what I understand they are in storage at Dublin port as they are to heavy to be transported on the M50 ? Did any of our overpaid engineers devise a plan to move the generators yet ??
They sent them to Ukraine.
Probably cost a fortune in storage for some of their cronies
Wow, I would love to hear more about that.
Ireland has been abandoned full stop.
There has been no power for eight days now where we live in rural east mayo, seen no one out clearing the trees or fixing anything , zero. Used powercheck, and it said estimated time of 9 o clock when power restored last night, yet nothing still no power still in pitch black darkness.
Absolutely scandalous !!
The GAA clubhouse? Is she serious? What a disgrace when families have no power. Typical Irish nonsense.
It's a Club ..and the public are not in it
Why haven’t the army come in?
Exactly !
Has Ireland blamed this on England yet?
Trump for not supporting Climate Change, he may do soon.
Yes, they were abandoned. Rural Ireland will be treated badly now and in the future. They want their land.
There land for what people won't move out of Dublin to ghost estate with no infrastructure
Of course, it has been abandoned going back forever. There's not even a bus service once you leave Dublin, Galway, or Cork. The train service is too expensive for the majority of people to use. I live in Dublin 5 & there are people with no electricity since the storm who live 5 minutes away from me, but rural Ireland are always the last to get the tiniest bit of infrastructure, if any. The people should have the power to vote these baboons out of office, considering they are paid with our tax money.
Of course it was and it was the same here in roscommon a few weeks before Christmas for 2 weeks without power or water in the last 2 months some people have been 4 to 5 weeks without water or electricity
So even after people suffering last year, the government or councils still made no effort to have shelters and supplies and a plan to care for people this time..
All the young people gone away...there's no one to repair!
The government has failed rural communities.
The Irish government works for Dublin, rest get no say no support no funding.
Pat thinks the GAA should do the governments job 😂😂. Laughable. Supply generators. Wow.
As somebody that's currently without power, only 10km from Galway City, l think that it's unreasonable to expect that the state has redundant resources on standy at all times. Many of us have moved out of the area after developing colds and sore throats - but we are now a burden on others. However, the real hardships that are being faced are cold homes (due to the very low external temperatures, our house dropped to 8C even though it's a B rated house), the lack of water for cooking, cleaning and flushing loos.and the availability of medicines and GP contact. Water tankers and subsidised gas heaters would go a long way. We are expected to show up to work without showering for over a week - it's tough. A 50 year plan to put electricity lines underground, in a 1st world country, is needed.
All of this , ALL. Is because Irish people voted in these people. End of.!!!!!!!!?
The Government promptly took two weeks holiday commencing the day after they formed the Government.
The countries leadership was noteworthy for its absence in the aftermath of storm Eowyn. The question, will it make any difference to the nation when our woke leaders return from their sojourn? Will anybody notice?
There is a much bigger storm looming on the horizon from the USA, but our blind shepherds haven’t seen this one coming either!
The EU will replace all Foreign companies, the US is bankrupt by 1000K.Trillion $ the cost to rebuild Gaza, Iraq, Libya. Los Angeles.
The EU is ok, as is the EU Sector of Ireland. The Spanish upgrade the Shipyards in Northern Ireland & UK. There may also be a new bridge being built between NI. and Scotland.
The EU and all countries that support International Law will be ok,
When you have somebody with special needs and you depend on the electricity for that person you do notify the ESB and they have to endeavour to switch you back on as quickly as possible. My daughter had oxygen when she was younger and we were on a list with the ESB. Thankfully it was never an issue.
Almost a quarter of a million euros spent on humanitarian support? So less than half of what was spent on a wall in Dublin...🙄
Most of the political class in this country are utterly devoid of CRITICAL THINKING ability.
ALWAYS expect the UNEXPECTED. Thus, plan accordingly.
Anyone that expects our government could deal with a storm is delusional. They can’t even grit the roads when there is frost or snow forecast. To put yourself and family at the mercy of bureaucrats and their drive to rely on the electricity grid is pure folly. Think about it. Heating, lighting, cooking and with electric cars transport. All run on the same fuel source ! That’s madness ! ALWAYS have alternatives for heating, lighting, cooking & transport. There are gas and paraffin appliances that will do all of the above.
A listening to Kenny what did he ever do for Ireland.
lived here since 1994. Gas bottle. Stove. essential. Because electricity does go out.
Rural Ireland is a first to reach net zero.
Ignorant comments from pat.... its not people down boreens or half way up a mountain, sitting there with no mobile phone signal.... how patronising and utterly out of touch / pushing an agenda 😢
Just keep power line clear..... Don't point fingers.., it's action needed
Our country has been abandoned by these clowns not only rural communities..
This is not accurate. MET Eireann have NOT said that storms would increase by 20% specifically.
Of course they have but hey all them voters (fools) voted them back in
Lack of tree cutting around power lines.....
I live in Galway we have several power cuts from falling trees
Exactly same here they need to have a maintenance programme in place to cut down tree branches that are in danger of falling on lines. Eir also need to do similar work but unfortunately when things are back to normal all this will be forgotten about until the next big storm.
GAA looking out for a hand out NO.
We are a gymnastics club we don't get hand outs.
Use the massive amounts you get from games for a non professional sport.
I got a generator but can’t use cos I can’t start it with osteoporosis in my arms.
Rural Ireland being ignored and you get TDs from Dublin in, unbelievable
If you want abandonment talk to the people in Mica houses. Gov should be taken to Eu court over this because in typical fashion gov is " looking into it " and inertia is the result.
Failed state
Rural Ireland is always for gotten about where's our fancy bike sheds or security huts 😂😂😂
Lousy Government
Solar panels that are connected to the grid, are cut off during power outages for safety reasons. If you had excess power, it would be fed back on the power lines, which could be in a dangerous state or effect those working to repair the lines. So solar panels are not a solution to the current situation.
We are not out of this winter yet !! Sudden Stratospheric Warming conditions are currently being observed in the Artic creating potential conditions similar to 2018...its almost identical in fact....the difference is 2018 was a southern oscilation El Nino which prevented high pressure continuing north as spring progressed...this year is a La Nina event which may not be as co-operative....Mid Feb to mid April could be the coldest on record if these conditions persist.....This broadcast is more suitable to the summer evenings in June when the snow is still on the ground ....
Thank you Christina Finn for at least showing some humanity. More then I can say for the rest of the panel.
Week without power now and counting.
No sign of anyone from the countryside that your discussing
Poor seniors freezing disgraceful left behind for filly folly rubbish 😢
Ah wind me hoop the east coast got hit to but the infrastructure in the east survived its quite clear what needs to happen and who decided what parts get electricity first
Listening to this hand wringing is painful and reminds me of the response to the recent fire event in Los Angeles. The authorities go from an under reaction to a massive influx of assets who then proceeded to sit on their thumbs.
24 hrs later wifi signal returns.
" You Are Coincidence Theorist " 😮
Rural abandoned always sure even Éamon De Valera Was at It.
Too many planes upsetting jet stream
How does the cables being placed underground increase cost to customers for up to 50 years this cost should 100 per cent covered by the government we pay tax's and electric to your house is public infrastructure....
The cost of putting thousands and thousands of miles of high voltage distribution power lines underground across fields bogs mountains ditches and rivers would be astronomical, not to mention the associated thousands of transformers and electrical switchgear etc. Its never going to happen, simple as that.
When motor ways are been dug and put in then the electric lines could be put in.
Use the Apple money
You have to spend thousands and jump through hoops to get planning for a house to shelter ourselves but the forestry company's can plant trees under high powered lines and up against peoples houses.
What happened to the irish the attitude and lack of empathy is embarrassing, all mouth and no action
Shane the old folks around me still don't know where the "humanitarian hub" is. I've found an email, but i'm not sure what an email is going to do for them.
The "humanitarian hub" closest to us ,here during the week, didn't have any water available......
Our power came back today after 7 days .
Yes, the answer to the question posed is yes, rural Ireland was abandoned
We're like a third world country begging for help every time we have a storm in this country. The foreign help even had to bring their own equipment with them.. yet this government can spend €336,000 on a bike shed, €1.4 million on a security hut, €2.5 billion (so far) on a hospital that was supposed to cost €600 million euros. We're hemorrhaging money all over the place and getting nothing of value in return for it.
More concerned about voting in women and men for being black ? While the west of Ireland has on person representing them in the dail
So according to climate events are we going to get a heatwave or is it going to b storm after storm
The before the storm they were more interested in their own positions in the Dail and fighting amongst themselves, instead of putting plans in place to help people on the aftermath of the storm ...They are disgraceful .
Yes the storm has gone. What is the Gov. plan going forward. independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice said 95% of the faults was fallen Trees beside Power Lines.
Surely it’s Trumps fault ?
Usual remedies more taxes and tariffs to pay for government incompetence
Pat talking about cost effective?😂😂😂😂😂😂 how much is that monstrosity of a children's hospital going to cost???? And I could go on and on and on.... newstalk pushing the government narrative yet again...
Yes abandoned and neglected due to Government policy, shame on the pups in office.
What about the 13 Billion free money from Apple ? That would easily pay for putting all are electric/communication infrastructure underground and safe from violent storms.
We have listening to this nonsense passing the book all these agencies somebody is not doing their job nonsense
The people in the west voted for these people, now get on with it!
What would better preparedness look like ?
Ireland is always looking for a handout
Yes
when you sign up to your supplier , one of the questions is do you have special requirements regarding loss of power..... p.s. the same people complaining about government not fixing everything are the same people who complained about masks etc... p.s. i had no power or mobile for 7 days ,
We're not ready for these weather s events
Go electric no way
All a waste of money no money how does the so called Toisheach no their is going to b more storms when he wasn't for this one ridiculous
Pat definitely getting paid ...🤨🤨🤨
Lists in the HSE! They are 40 years behind in ICT. They don't even have a National DBMS in place in 2025.
Complete BS!
