Dude, I can't believe how FAST your content has grown. I remember literally a couple months ago you were only at 3000 subs, and now you're at 111K, congratulations my bro! I'm so glad to be part of your subscriber base.
This is exactly how I ended up in prison at 22 but instead of continuing this line of thinking I studied self help, business, religion, philosophy, the universe ext. I read any book i could find that was none fiction and literally went through every believe i had one at a time and contemplated where and who they came from. Now i am 36 with my own business, home, and an amazing girl. Overthinking and even feeling guilt for things i couldn't control and not taking action almost killed me.
18:53 one interesting thing to point out, classical stoics believed emotions to be rational. Emotions are born from judgements and judgements are made with reason (both properly and improperly). When something occurs we get a gut reaction (first movement) that is then followed by a judgement and the subsequent emotions
Never thought I would find myself doing all of these at this point of my life, I always thought that life owed me and I was some special person and here I was exhibiting everything anti-stoic
I had to pause and finally say this, now that I'm a few videos in-- your sense of humor slaps. Your sarcasm is the brand of sarcasm where I flourish. And I deeply appreciate learning with that kind of banter charm going alongside the narrative. Thanks for what you do. I'm really enjoying your videos. I'm a millenial white poor creative queer autistic farmer activist, actively decolonizing my life and staying regulated. Cheers 🩵✌️
This is brilliant, we are now into the domain of psychology. And what to do to ensure misery. I love it. It seems to go deeper than just stoicism, it goes right into the heart of life, and what it is to be a person, how to sabotage your life, another in the series of how to throw your life away. Sometimes it's easier to recognize your mistakes and correct them. A brilliant expose of what not to do, and well, basically, throw your life away, I don't know how else to put it.
"The kind of person who knows what they should do to make themselves happier but never gets up and does it" I will make sure not to reflect on that one as reflection is the enemy of despair. Great video once again, Thank you.
Didn't expect to find myself in some topics of this video, especially the actionless thoughts part, but here I am. Stoicism never interested me beyond shallow waters, but after this I feel like giving it a chance, good work!
Thank you! And I think Stoicism can be a mixed bag just because there is so much written about it and this either ends up really watering it down to the point it becomes really uninteresting or we get lost in this sea of interpretations
Don't read/watch too much of the popular new Stoic things. Better to read the original stuff from Seneca, Aurelius and Epictetus. It's not hard to read.
@@unsolicitedadvice9198Sea of interpretations? Sounds like Judaism. Orthodox Jewish rabbi's have a philosophy similar to the Greeks, Christians, Ancient Middle Eastern civilizations (that are all extinct because of Muslims, but they were known for being very moral and focused on discipline like the Zoroastrians for an example of a group that still sort of exists). Jews influenced all Christian and Muslim philosophy for the past 2000 years and are a good example of how society would look if we still followed philosophers. Study Orthodox Jewish philosophy and maybe start with a sample by looking at the varying philosophies of every individual in the Talmud and early commentators on it (the Zugot from 200BCE-10CE, the Tannaim from 10CE to 220 CE, and the Amoraim by 500 CE) and the later rishonim (1000-1500CE). The Rishonim are largely influenced by Babylonian Jewish scholars in Babylon and Israel, called the Geonim, from ~600-1000CE. They also have many ideologies unique to themselves while reviewing past Jewish scholars and sages. It's very esoteric and hard to research on your own without spending a ton of time on it, but our sages really covered almost every topic in philosophy and debated them. Good key word searches are "Musar מוסר (discipline) and Hashkafa השקפה (philosophy)” Also Rabbi Maimonides as an example of an influential rabbi to the nonjews, but his critics are only read by us religious Jews, critics (who often agreed) such as Raavad, Ramban.
This is the right way to explain stoicism. When we read the text written by those wise people, we read hoe it should be but that’s almost abstract relative to our current lives. in your explanation, we can better relate to many of our behaviors and therefore see where we can go relative to our present situation. Well done!
The lines "We must pin everything on other people. Our fingers should become tired from singling out the world, or our parents, or God, as the author of our suffering." are a multidimensional mirror. They are like the mantra of the narcissist, but in the context of this video it becomes clear that the narcissist can be pitied upon. Since they are the creators of their own despair, lacking the ability to hold themselves responsible for what they truly can control.
This is a practice in nihilism/existentialism. The tearing down of stoicism to see what you're left with. It's extremely dark and a decent anolog of modern thought. If anything, it simply highlights the current state of our nihilistic society and the need for a collective direction and reastablishment of objective truth.

This is the third video I've watched from your channel after youtube through it into my feed this morning and I'm hooked, someone is finally bringing the questions and perspectives people should be asking and contemplating to light. I've been desperately seeking this kind of content, so much so I even started diving into ancient stuff like Alchemy and Gnosticism to try and understand how old possibly unquestioned/untested beliefs are influencing society today and I hadn't even considered Stoicism in a kind of photo negative version as something wreaking havoc on society. I can tell that if this is how you approach your content I will be a very long time supporter so thank you for this brain food I so desperately desired.

I remember seeing a video just like this but it was about how to be depressed. It's cool and all but I'd really love to see the opposite, positive side of this. Like another video but just flipped the right way. Thank you.
oh jeez i needed the section that talks about focusing on too many self-perceived strengths. i am very into fitness and making music. these are two things i have held as cornerstones of my own well being but also areas that i get validation from. i am 23 and have so much trouble figuring out a career. every 3 months it is a new idea. i have gotten certified to work in cyber security, but bailed because i wanted something more meaningful in psychology. college feels too boring, so now i want to do construction. i feel like ill be surrounded by a lot of assholes in construction so i just get frozen in fear. this has been really tough for me recently. and it sounds like a pretension that is holding me back but it really is a deep fear of the world chewing me up. i need to courageously jump into something. i decided recently to get a simple part time job and take a couple trade school construction classes. not attach my ego to career anymore, as we are often taught to in america, but to still move forward.
Sometimes it seems that people (for instance in the poor countries) who have no choise but to do anything which helps them to feed themselves and their families have much more easy lifes. Never spoiled for choise 😉
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way... I think to a lot of Americans that famous Pink Floyd line describes stoicism, which couldn't be further from the truth. It's about understanding what you're feeling, embracing it, then putting it past you. Something I still need a lot of work on. This video helped quite a bit. Ty good sir, cheers...
7:17 I do this crap all the time. I think about all the things I need to do to get in shape, calorie restrict, workout, but the thoughts don't turn into actions.
I love the concept that you lay two concepts, one is where you suggest the practice of philosophy done right, and the other - its counterpart; where there's no practice to improve at all.
I am honestly a very big admirer of your videos, explanations, and your breakdowns of such ideas. It all seems so solacing. I have a request to you however, could you try out Rabindranath Tagore's works. Originally he's a bengali author and we have grown up reading his works all of the time. He's a noble prize winner as well. It'd be absolutely amazing to see a video if you break down his philosophy or any of his works like you usually do. Of course this is just a request and nothing else and I'm not forcing you to. But honestly I'd want you to try it out and if you find it intriguing enough, you could make a break down video. Thank you if you this comment. ❤
Ah thank you so much! And I will add him to the list of thinkers I need to look into. I tend to hesitate to gear too much outside Western and Buddhist philosophy just because I don't have the background knowledge to say much about them, but I'll certainly check him out
"Reflection should be the enemy, and blame shall be the name of the game". Terrifying So what I'm going to stick with is "Reflection should be the hobby, and responsibility shall be the mode of my code". Thanks for pointing out a different perspective!
5:00 what about when people get upset about something outside their sphere of influence, then do things within their sphere of influence to expand their influence, and then once they have enough influence address their original complaint? it seems like worries, complaints, and gripes against things outside our influence can also motivate us to expand our influence.
I like Nietzsche’s critique of Stoicism: it’s for emperors & slaves, those with bounded freedom. The rare & truly noble, will live beyond enduring suffering & duty of a camel.
Thank you! I need to get a stand for the backlight so I can keep it out of shot, but it has certainly made filming a lot less stressful (I used to have to wait until the Sun was at the right angle, and then just try and record everything as quickly as humanly possible)
Thank you for this unsolicited advice. Stoicism is quite nice actually... Sadly it is being co-opted by self help gurus, muscular alpha males and neoliberals who think we're all just not working hard enough to be competitive... Oh, and of course men who think about the Roman empire too often!
Joe! A new mic! Hands free! and hence an expressive masterpiece! A great concept for this episode indeed! The poetic phrasing and entertaining tone is one of your finest moments, out of many fine moments, dear eloquent sir :)
Dude, you just described how I lived my past few months, no wonder I almost took my life. Even from the exterior it seems like a suffocating way to live.
00:04 To destroy ourselves, we must focus on what is outside our control. 02:07 Rejecting responsibility and dwelling on things beyond our control leads to self-destruction. 04:05 Anti-Stoic worldview reflects reality 06:00 Choose to act without thinking for an easier path to destruction. 07:51 Act without thought and never learn from mistakes 09:51 Reject wisdom, distance from knowledgeable people 11:49 Justice is treating people honestly and considering how you would like to be treated. 13:44 We should behave like my dog and get overly attached to everything. 15:42 Complaining about life being unfair leads to self-victimization and paralysis of action. 17:33 Understanding and addressing our emotions is crucial for avoiding despair. 19:27 Avoid suppressing emotions to prevent self-destruction
Your work has been great. Before finding your channel my favorite and sort of only “philosopher” I ever listened to or read about was Alan Watts. Your videos have made me look into De Sade and others that I never heard of prior.
I haven't even gotten to one minute in this video, after about the same amount of time on your "The Argument Atheists Always Get Wrong" video and as an Atheist currently working out the actual math to Pascal's wager, that's all I needed to know to hit subscribe.
Thank you! I am a little tired but I am in talks with video editors so I should soon just have to research, write, and record, which I will be very grateful for
Thanks, I really love these videos. Ive been very interested in the broader philosophy. I particularly enjoy the fact that different, sometimes contradictory views are presented without bias and judgement. One bit I'd be very interested in, coming in from a Physics background, is ideas about different philosophies of related to science, including classical scientific views promoted by the Greek, logical positivism, the modern scientific method, etc. In interpreting the results of quantum mechanics some folks still promote the classical interpretation, while some promote the "shut up and calculate" view because people argue that scientific views cannot answer those questions anyway. But those are the two views I know of, so it'd be quite interesting to know what other views there are.
Its a little confusing whenu make videos about ruining ur life. Some ppl like to listen to your videos as if they were podcasts. But with this kind of videos its a little hard for the listeners to understand and comprehend. Please make more stoicism videos and talk about different philosophys like taoism and and individualism and ur informative videos shall be appreciated
Well. I went into this thinking it was just going to be a critique of Broicism and mistaking it for Stoicism. But this was a refreshing way to explain how Stoicisms view the concept of falling into Oiêsis. I was ready to light the torch and hold up the pitchfork, but I overreacted. I see how foolish I was, violating the Cardinal Virtue of Wisdom/Phronêsis. That turned out to be a beautiful lesson. I apologize for my overreaction.
Not at all! I am glad you enjoyed it! I really ought to do a video on Broicism at some point though and what I take to be are its misinterpretations. That’s an awesome term by the way! Did you come up with that?
Wow, that approach was a nice thing! It showed me that I'm unconsciously improving my life more and more from quite some time 🤔 Damn! I need to get myself up and maximize misery as soon as possible!
I think people who aren't able to grasp the very dangerous slope of stoicism taking over your life should just view it as "It is what it is : the philosophy." I've had friends who became very depressed because of that.
Make a video about: discuss the entertainment media (such as Drake and Jay-Z) who is supported by government intelligence agencies and the justification of using a technology called v2k on citizens ignoring all privacy and human rights laws whilst facilitating their profit and propogandising and weaponising their self-imposed authority? For example - why is a bookmaker allowed to influence the brain of their customers? Isn't that quite dangerous? The question is - to what extent can a commercial company influence the public? Should they be allowed access to someone's physiology and brain wiring?
neat style choice. reminds me of that famous "if i were the devil" monologue, except this video makes sense. that monologue confuses internal with external objects and is psychotic because it uses bad arguments to convince people internal objects exist outside.

5:00 what about when people get upset about something outside their sphere of influence, then do things within their sphere of influence to expand their influence, and then once they have enough influence address their original complaint?
it seems like worries, complaints, and gripes against things outside our influence can also motivate us to expand our influence.
Oh yeah that would be influencing the world through focusing on behaviour - Epictetus gives some examples of this
Brilliant channel, keep up the great content!
Thank you!
I like Nietzsche’s critique of Stoicism: it’s for emperors & slaves, those with bounded freedom. The rare & truly noble, will live beyond enduring suffering & duty of a camel.
been watching for a while now, and you're amazing! love the new setup too!
Thank you! I need to get a stand for the backlight so I can keep it out of shot, but it has certainly made filming a lot less stressful (I used to have to wait until the Sun was at the right angle, and then just try and record everything as quickly as humanly possible)
Wonderfully whimsical yet humorous and profound review😊
Loving the new mic. Can definitely hear the subtle difference in sound quality
Thank you!
I try to follow stoicism in my life and think it's a great philosophy. This video will be interesting.
Textbook example of reverse psychology. Thanks man, I appreciate it.
00:04 To destroy ourselves, we must focus on what is outside our control.
02:07 Rejecting responsibility and dwelling on things beyond our control leads to self-destruction.
04:05 Anti-Stoic worldview reflects reality
06:00 Choose to act without thinking for an easier path to destruction.
07:51 Act without thought and never learn from mistakes
09:51 Reject wisdom, distance from knowledgeable people
11:49 Justice is treating people honestly and considering how you would like to be treated.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 good work man. Seems every video gets better than the last
I am glad you called this out.
Your work has been great. Before finding your channel my favorite and sort of only “philosopher” I ever listened to or read about was Alan Watts. Your videos have made me look into De Sade and others that I never heard of prior.
Your delivery is great, and now I want to see you play the part of a villain in a movie of show.
What a clever way to examine a doctrine!
Haha! Thank you!
My Gods, this is hysterical.
And the production has increased! Loving the changes and growth...props to you!
highly deserved
You’re such a mischievous fella 👌🏼 Excellent
Thank you!
I haven't even gotten to one minute in this video, after about the same amount of time on your "The Argument Atheists Always Get Wrong" video and as an Atheist currently working out the actual math to Pascal's wager, that's all I needed to know to hit subscribe.
NEW THUMBNAIL 🎉🎉
Haha! I worked out how to use Photoshop (with substantial help from a friend)!
Thanks for the inspiration to get off my couch and stop spiraling haha
Haha! Thank you for watching
I've been working on destroying my life. Thanks for the help!
This is brilliant.
Thank you!
Damn the output is crazy
Thank you! I am a little tired but I am in talks with video editors so I should soon just have to research, write, and record, which I will be very grateful for
@unsolicitedadvice9198 glad to hear that. Definitly looking forward for it
Thanks! This changed my life around!
I love how each sentiment or notion of evil is punctuated by the most animated eyebrows on youtube. Absolutely brilliant delivery
21st-century England needs more precious young souls like you if she is going to survive.
The "west" has already fallen, people are just too deluded and far gone morally to see it.
Bro, literally described how to be ME! ❤❤
Thanks for the guide! I wasn't really sure if I was doing it right! Much respect, and Please Come to Brazil.
7:50 that line just made me self reflect.
I quite enjoy how it ended, certainly "thinking to improve your life" this is.
Incredibly awesome video. It encompasses many things I have been speculating on for years. Thank you for this fine wine bitter sweet to the last drop.
damn you didn't have to go ahead and cover my entire thought process in a video
This kinda reminds me of CCP grey's video on how to max out misery
Its a little confusing whenu make videos about ruining ur life. Some ppl like to listen to your videos as if they were podcasts.
But with this kind of videos its a little hard for the listeners to understand and comprehend.
Please make more stoicism videos and talk about different philosophys like taoism and and individualism
and ur informative videos shall be appreciated
These guides to destroying your life are so much fun to watch XD
Great work as always!
Thank you!
you sir, are playing with fire in this one...
Parents are never innocent, BTW.
A fun perspective on a popular, yet practical philosophy. Well done!
It showed me that I'm unconsciously improving my life more and more from quite some time 🤔
Damn! I need to get myself up and maximize misery as soon as possible!
You never fail to teach and entertain
Thank you! That's very kind of you to say
😂😂 This actually explains stoicism better. I don't know how to explain it but I understand better now.
I think people who aren't able to grasp the very dangerous slope of stoicism taking over your life should just view it as "It is what it is : the philosophy." I've had friends who became very depressed because of that.
Did he really do Stoicism? Or, he's just suppressing his emotions? I might be wrong, but, how did he became depressed because of Stoicism?
bro your videos are so good but so less views and subscribers , full support keep going , love you bro
"Dangerous granuals of hope" 😀 Brilliant!
Make a video about:
discuss the entertainment media (such as Drake and Jay-Z) who is supported by government intelligence agencies and the justification of using a technology called v2k on citizens ignoring all privacy and human rights laws whilst facilitating their profit and propogandising and weaponising their self-imposed authority?
For example - why is a bookmaker allowed to influence the brain of their customers?
Isn't that quite dangerous? The question is - to what extent can a commercial company influence the public? Should they be allowed access to someone's physiology and brain wiring?
Most random suggestion
neat style choice. reminds me of that famous "if i were the devil" monologue, except this video makes sense. that monologue confuses internal with external objects and is psychotic because it uses bad arguments to convince people internal objects exist outside.
Self destruction > self improvement
