Track song 1 sounds more natural "tube" sound on my medium priced computer speaker. More open. And #2 sounds more flat. So number 1 is better with my ears.

#1 has more spatial feeling, deeper stage. #2 sounds more accurate but flat, maybe more detailed but I think the frequency response has more in the highs so that helps with details too.

  • @jukingeo

I agree with those that say track #2. The soundstage is more open and it is overall smoother sounding. The difference is apparent even listening through my computer speakers (but I do have a very good speaker system on my computer). So I am curious as to which amp was which now. So was the second amp the push pull one?

  • @julesmeuffels

The vid clearly shows when either amp is turned on or off, multiple times. In this test I preferred #1 the PP, much more detail, punch and air in the vocals. To better show/tell the difference you could use the same pre tubes and a stereo recording.

Thanks for super interesting site, Mr Ahn! I think no2 sounds flat and uninteresting compared to no1. It lacks most of the overall sense of spatial presense and life to voices and brass that is present in no1. Based on my own experiences of SE, a Reisong A10, SE Class A, EL34:s, which has the life and presense, while my solid state push-pull, NAD 317, does not, I guess no2 is Push-Pull.
By the way, is it possible to get the schematics of no1, since I am planning to build a 300b-based SET amp soon?

2nd immediately felt closed in and more "accurate", but first was smoother and a more relaxing vibe with a big midrange. The different pre-stage tubes radically change things here. PP depends on good feedback components and values. It can sound very bad, and there are improvements over Williamson that have been made. Often the circuit is overly complicated, so it's not done well. But if it's a DHT, I would use single ended with no feedback.

All 3 tube amps I have are SE. The only 'PP' I have are the McIntosh MC60's and MC240. I must say I love them all but the Macs are what they call unity coupled and not really PP or ultralinears. These days I listen to SE. They save me money on tubes, sound more airy, pretty good bass even at 3.5w per channel. Source is important, you need to have a good CD transport and DAC playing well recorded/produced CD's. No matter CD's, records or streaming sources, I really like SE amps for the details especially on very low volumes. Whether 300B, EL34, 6550 or KT88 and even EL84 tube amps, they sound so real and seductive that changed my opinion on SE's.

For many years I was a fan of push-pull designs influenced by the measurements and the big manufacturers of audio machines, and I even made fun of the audiophiles for their obsession with single ended with phrases like: remind me of some unfortunate one-handed people trying to do things that require two hands .... Until one day of my visit to a sound exhibition in a hotel in Athens, I heard for the first time a well-made single ended set with D.H.T.'s and I was stunned! Since then of course I drastically changed the opinion I had about S.E. and as it turned out afterwards from my own constructions, SO, YES, S.E. SOUNDS MUCH BETTER THAN ANY PUSH-PULL SCHEMATIC. If you search carefully to internet, you'll probably find the opinion from the legend of the push-pull design -Williamson- who noticed that :
