First want to say thank you. Bringing back memories of my youth. I remember Kearny. and Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips On Belleville Turnpike between Argyle PL and Beech St. Before my family left Kearny, I can recall that Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips became a pizzeria. I am so old that I can recall there was a Shoprite on the corner of Stewart Ave and Beech St many, many, many, years ago. Torn down in the 80's I believe. Parking lot was on Magnolia Ave. I can even remember that Shoprite delivered your groceries if you did not have a car. I do miss Kearny very much. It was my childhood town for many many years. Since I was like 3 when my family moved to Kearny from Harrison. I would like to know if anyone has pictures of that Shoprite that was on Stewart AVE and Beech St? So many things have changed since I was a young lad in Kearny. My first job was the Shoprite on Passaic AVE. My siblings worked in the Burger King. My mother worked in Two Guys in Kearny. I hope I can get to Kearny, NJ one day.
I was born in West Hudson Hospital on Bergen Avenue. K H S Class of 1975. Went to “Saints “for grammar school Married at St. Cecilia’s church. I remember going to the store Youth World on Kearny Ave. for the official school uniform. Mandee also on Kearny Avenue. Drug Fair for all prescriptions Ben Franklins was a 5&10 for anything else that you needed. Johns Bargain Store The A&P was a few doors away Hygrade bakery was on the corner of Wilson Avenue and Kearny Ave. Phil’s Fish & Chips Two Guys on Passaic Avenue. Does anyone else remember when they had a Merry Go Round? My sister met her husband there. I remember Boys Town on Belgrove Dr. Please do a part 2.
Nice video. Grew up in kearny, moved there in 1970 from Newark. Thought I died and went to heaven. Great town to grow up in. Good memories. I was 9 years old. St Stephen's to one year to Q . P . TO KEARNY HIGH. IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE. ❤
Thank you so much for a pleasant journey. Very enjoyable for me. Born there in 1939 I lived in Kearny and have many fond memories of my youth spent there. Cultural shock seeing the dramatic structural changes, quite dramatic for me. We retired North Jersey for South Jersey some 20 + years ago and have not visited or been back to Kearny in that time. Also lived on Devon Street as well, near Bell Playground ( playground was a dirt field when I was a youngster.) I cast a vote for part two as well.
I lived at 23 Devon St., also the second floor apartment on the other side of the Irish American and the apartment house across the street from Western Auto/Satriale's, thank you for the trip down memory lane
Chicken 🐔 Galore. Gunnel Oval. Kearny High School (Can't ever forget the view of New York City). Old NJ Transit station on Elm St (played stick ball in elm psrk). Dead Man's Curve. Trestle to Newark. 👍
Loved the walk down memory lane. I too was born in 1965 and lived a few doors down from your Dad on Devon St. We left in 1974 but your Dad and I were best buds in our early years. Say hi for me! PS Ed Halicki threw his no hitter in 1975. Would love to see part 2!
@@MrJhoops5 great to hear there will be a part 2. I was on the edge of my seat when you guys were at the Brother's (formerly Bober's) Bakery, wondering if you were going to say anything about Tony's market just a few doors down. A quarter meant Friday night treat at Tony's :D Great father/son production - bravo.
@@geriwittig4939 @JimHooper yes good old Tony's. I'm sure some of our other favorites are long gone by now but remember Aroma's Pizza, the Modern Deli and walking all over town trying to find a store that had Wacky Packages so we could fill out our collection? It would be great to see Kearny High School and St Stephen's in Part 2!
Really enjoyed this. Like your Dad I grew up in Devon Street too but born in 1964. I left in 1990 and while am nostalgic for what Kearny used to be, I enjoy the changes. Life is change. It was a great place to grow up. My adult kids roll their eyes when we visit family in New Jersey, I sound just like your Dad but he’s lucky, you seem to care. Lol. Yes please do a part two, go to the local neighborhoods around the schools.
Awesome job, Bill and Jim!!! Kearny has changed so much, I left there 50 years ago next month! Next you need to do Ocean Gate, post Sandy! I will come along and fill you in on everything!
My parents opened Scotland Yard, Liza and Bobby Wetherbee. We lived above it, I was 5. I'm in Utah now, thank you for the video! Loved showing my kids and hubby my parents old bar. Inside looks about the same ❤
Please do a part 2. Show the schools, parks, and the rest of the avenue. I was born in Kearny 1969. Lived in Kearny until 2007. The town was getting bad so we left. Thanks for the video!
@Bern McVey that's great. I guess all the schools around town must've participated. I have something in there from our St. Stephen's class also. Would love to see what we all put in there. :)
Big Stash's best in town and better than any of the chains. Grew up with those sandwiches. Also, further down just crossing the street to next corner there's a Mexican restaurant I believe. That use to be Kearny Liquor & Deli. My dad Victoriano Roca was the owner of that corner deli. The kids from St. Cecilia's would go there during lunch. My parents would treat the corner deli as a Peruvian restaurant. They'd sell rotisserie chicken on the weekends and a bunch of other Peruvian food. I'd say my dad was one of the pioneers of Peruvian cuisine in Kearny. I love this video. Loved reminiscing. Love Kearny. Graduating class of 2004 at Kearny High School :) God bless. Thanks Bill and your dad for this.
How about EAGENS hot dogs and French iegravy and ROY the greatest taking your order including beer to drink in your car in parking lot.Do not recall ID being big deal and onion rings were stellar!Aware was on other side of the pike making it in N.Arlington.To most however a Kearny institutION.,
I lived in Kearny from 3rd grade 1968 and left when I joined the Navy in 79. Donnegals (spelling) used to be Scotland Yard and the Yorkshire Pub before that. It was connected to Kearny Fish and Chips. Tasty on Friday nights when we were slamming 25 cent Schaefers. I went to Saint Cecilia’s School 3rd thru 8th grade and then to KHS. Loved this! Lets have a part 2

@itzEmma20 😂😂 I remember that! There was a lady who yelled that in the front section for take out. The restaurant in the back was so nostalgic and odd with nautical stuff all over.

Well Done! Chicken Galore - The Greeks - Gunnel Oval - all could be in your part II!
Great ideas!
Loved Chicken Galore!
DEFINITELY The Greeks
Brothers had the best rolls 👍
Yes, visit the schools, the hospital, view of NYC, etc...do more!
Yes, the rolls from Brother's Bakery were good. We used to bring them to Point Pleasant Beach for a family who requested for them before our visit.
In the 80s and 90s I drove down that main road many times where Bill and his Dad showed us the stores, bars and restaurants
When Bober's was mentioned, it brought back a memory of 7th grade. I put a carpet tack on Mark Bober's chair. 😂 Lincoln School around 1982
I grew up in Kearny the same exact time as your dad. It's like we have the same memories from childhood - which is really cool!
That’s great to hear! I guess our paths never crossed. Thank you!

Lived in Belleville and ended up at boys town in the late 70s please take some pictures of that area
The home town of one of the FBI's Most Wanted; David Torea aka "Little Manolo" last seen in Oceanside, California!
Can you show Kearny High? Also the old Kearny KMart shopping center???
Great job from a great father and son team !! Looking forward to part 2 soon again great work !!

I grew up on Devon Street. Between Midland & Oakwood.
Part two should maybe list more parks?
Yep, Threw that no hitter in Aug of 1975
Film a part 2!!!!!!!
There is a very interesting WW 11 plaque dedicated to Two brothers on the chestnut st bridge . It is between Midland ave. And Columbia Ave.
Ironically there was another war hero who lived on that block next to the bridge who passed in Iraq. Initials EK

Yes, it was.
Do more of Kearny
We definitely will!
I am so sorry you can not get into the church but maybe you could get in if you call the church ahead of time?
Satriales would have been a better fit in North Arlington or Lyndhurst as there was a much larger Italian population . !!!

Halicki threw his gem in 1975.
Lived there for 42 years, I finally couldn't take it anymore and had to get out. Over run by illegals. Sad 😥😥😥 "The town I loved so well"
