    Thank you! been racking my brain for hours. No one said leave off the partition number IE sdc vs sdc1. Could not figure out why i was not getting a new partition. TY!

      Yes, sdc is the drive, sdc1 is the first partition.
      You're welcome.

    hello, I'm running into a problem on my laptop which is dual booted with linux mint 20.2 cinnamon and windows 10, when I type sudo fdisk -l my main partition for linux which is dev/nvme0n1p4 shows up as Microsoft basic data even though it is an ext4 partition, could you tell me how to change it to a linux main partition using fdisk? I've been searching for how but can't find it anywhere, if you could tell me how, it would be greatly appreciated as I can't use linux unless I boot from recovery mode, thanks

    Good tut. I ran into a permissions problem though. I don't know if using sudo to create the partition, or to mount the disk made root the owner. Solved with chown but is there a way to set the permissions during the creation of partitions or during mounting?

    You use the cd command to open a terminal in a different location. What command do you use to open a terminal in a different partition?

    How to delete /dev/sdb3? For create it anew because I've created it incorrectly (I wanted to make my Linux to boot in encrypted persistence mode and now I don't know how to do this but /dev/sdb3 has already been created and it doesn't save files after each shutting down)

    after deleting the first partition I found it helpful to enter "w" to write so that it updates your files. I didnt do that the first time, and the old partition somehow magically came back after it was deleted.

    I know this is a old video but, but have you ever had a problem of a hard drive not unmounting? Linux keeps saying its a CDROM when it is clearly a Hard Drive. I am trying to install Mint on a laptop.

    hey, at the last sector stage i type +10G for a 10 GB partition, but it tells me Values out of range. My main hard drive which is the one i am trying to partition is a TB, but i've only used 254.4 GB (properties on computer says so). Why can I not do this? Ive been trying for months. Great vid by the way

    I've got a bunch of /dev/ramdisk, i guess are I/O partitions, i've inserted an sd card, resulted /dev/sda1 a small vfat win 95, i suppose is a prebootable win95, and a /dev/sda2, a linux ext, i suppose an image of a linux OS i've installed recentrly, Can i destroy the win95 the linux and retry to setup a new partition, to prepare the sd card??

    Hey.. Nice video. I had a small question. Just wanted to know why do we format the partition ? Sorry if this is a silly Q.

    • @DigitalMetal
      @DigitalMetal  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simple answer, the formatting decides how files are written to the drive. It also contains a table of contents so we know where the files are on the drive. Without it, we would just be writing things randomly to the drive, never knowing if we are writing over existing files or how to file the files after they are written. Formatting does more then just that, but that's a big part of it.

  • @DigitalMetal
    @DigitalMetal  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @GhePeaTh: someone else had the same problem. I tested it, and it worked for me, but it took a while for the email to show up. If you are still having this problem let me know again and I'll look into it.

  • @roserobertson4395
    @roserobertson4395 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    as you were doing what you were doing i noticed a " WARNING, rereading the partition table failed with error 16: Device or resource busy. " At this point I would be lost, wondering where I messed up and I'm sure newbies would have given up at this point. That's why and I've tried but it seems too complicated. I just use G parted at least I can understand that.
    Well that's me, maybe every one else can understand . But good try.

      If you have questions why not ask them. I explain each command. Being new should not matter. If you don't understand something people can help, but you need to ask questions. Do you not understand the concept of drives and partitions, or what formatting is, that can be explained. As far as the programs and commands in the video go, I don't know what else I can explain, I feel like I explained each step pretty clearly, but if I missed something let me know.
