Wow! So good to listen to these songs again, blaring out across my farmhouse kitchen here in south-west England! Since the so-called 'special operation' began back in February I've been struggling a bit to enjoy Russian culture in its widest sense, but hearing these songs transported right back to St Pete's Kamchatka cellar where I love listening to covers of my favourite Tsoi songs. I just wish my Russian was good enough to sing along with not just the choruses! The music of Kino lives on!

It's the same movement of protestant (or not) english new-wave bands of the 80 like The Cure or The Stranglers and Post Punk one like Joy Division and not really US Grunge and heavy bands of the 90's. Still same tragic lives... car accident at 28 it's worse than anything

After that, however, when Lithuania "declared independance" and started relying on the West, the education system was restructured and English replaced Russian. I never grew up in Lithuania despite being born there. But I do want to learn Russian, just as a way to understand the history of Russia and as a way to converse with people in both countries better. And to understand the music.

I came across Gruppa Kino songs via my initial interest for the Soviet-Afghan war. I was looking at a playlist of those songs from the war and eventually the songs started popping up in my recommended. It helped me with a lot of things, it got me more interested in music from Russia, it helped me to think about scenarios for my writing, which I do as a hobby, and some of their music, like the first one in this video, is my go-to smoking song. It also helped appreciate Russia as a country. Yes, I am not on their side of the current ongoing conflict, but I am sensible enough to still respect Russian culture, I am even considering to start learning Russian. We shouldn’t let the bigotry of a small selection of loudmouths on the internet or the bitterness of old men in power disapprove a country’s culture or antagonize it’s people. On both sides.

Also, I have been to Moscow and Penza twice, travelled via air, rail and road and saw a good portion of Russia and loved it, especially the architecture, most beautiful buildings in the world are in Moscow. I found Kino from a friend, tbh its probably been the best thing for me. Helped a lot when I was getting through a period of depression, made me feel less lonely and feel that other people was suffering the same things as I did. Even after said period I still listen to Kino just because of how much good music they made. Probably one of the best things to come out of the USSR.
