Basenji. The barkless Basenji is a smart and mischievous ancient African breed. Here are top 10 interesting facts about the Basenjis.

Number 1. Ancient History. The Basenji is probably one of the oldest dog breeds of all. The Basenji are probably depicted on ancient Egyptian and libyan artifacts which are more than 5000 years old. It's believed that they were transported to these regions from Central africa as gift to pharaohs.
Number 2. No Barking. The Basenji is best known as the barkless breed but they make different sounds. They are especially good at yodeling and they like to growl as well. But don't worry they are not using the growling and yodeling very often.
Number 3. No dog odor. The Basenjis do not possess the typical doggy odor and overall they are very clean dogs. They groom themselves just like cats do.
Number 4. Good hunters. The Basenjis are hunters by nature. They have extraordinary sight and are well developed. Their hunting instinct is just as great as their intelligence and courage.
Number 5. Independent dogs. Just like many other hunting breeds. Basenjis are extremely independent. They're also quite aloof, alert and not trusting around strangers. On the other hand, they are very loyal, loving and friendly towards their owners and their family.
Number 6. Hard to train. The Basenjis are smart but independent dogs. They just like to do things on their own and they make their own decisions because of their independent personality. The obedience training is pretty hard and you must be an extremely patient trainer.
Number 7. Speed. The Basenjis are fast, like really, really, really fast. It's believed that they can run up to 35 MPH. For comparison, the fastest dog in the world, the greyhound can run up to 45 MPH. They are definitely fast enough to steal our sandwich and run away so no one can catch them.
Number 8. Scared of night. The Basenjis were bred to spend their time outside during the day and for some reason they still feel that way. It's common that these dogs are very nervous when you take them on a night walk. Sometimes they completely refused to do it.
Number 9. Lion Hunter. The Basenjis were used to lure lions out of their caves in Kenya. They would use Basenjis to find lions and get them out to the open space once they are there, the hunters had much bigger chance to hunt down the lion. But of course, Basenjis could never hunt lions by themselves.
Number 10. Affectionate Dogs. This breed is so particular and so uptight when it comes to cleanliness and its efforts. And it loves attention. In fact, this breed loves its family, loves to cuddle and loves when it is shown attention and affection. And it’s willing to give it right back to you, as well.
