Liah Yoo I wish I had exposure to knowledge about careers like this when I was a teen. I’m interested in cosmetic chemistry now but it’s far too late for me to change fields now. My career path would have been so different if I saw more interviews with successful women in stem jobs earlier. So glad the next gen won’t have the same problem. This was a great idea, liah.

This is such an incredible video. You have no idea how helpful this is right now. I'm an undergrad and I've been trying to figure out what I've been wanting to do. I'm registered as a biochemistry major and I'm not so sure if I wanted to continue with that. Rather I wasn't sure if biochemistry would be the right fit for what I wanted to do. This helped me have what I wanted to do articulated and tangible. This is SO cool and awesome!

Ok im hyped. I thought i wanted ecology but i started hate my biology classes and i started to take interest in chemistry. For a while ive been wanting to create things and although im in introductory to chemistry im really loving it but hate that i also have to split my attention to biology too. I cant switch to physical sciences because then it would be longer to graduate, like 3 classes more, so im going to stick with my degree plan and get into chemistry when i graduate

Being a cometic formulator is my dream job since young but couldnt get in as i dont much much experience n didnt graduate from chemistry major. I wonder if its really necessary to get a degree in chemistry or masters cert. I promise myself i will take this advise n work hard. Seeing people buy products n they see good results using products that i formulate makes me really happy.
pretty sure you need technical knowledge in the field of biology/chemistry/material science and or engineering. If science is not your forte, maybe you could consider a role more on the creative side, for example, beauty creative directors often determine the direction of products to be formulated.

I think depends on what kind of company you work for. Sometimes I feel that most of the formulation chemist is not appreciated. This is one of the reason that I give up and remain my role as supplier.

@@annisanm1389 consider the online course from institute of personal care science. They have a TH-cam video too. Additionally you can apply for internship/jobs that aren't necessarily related to being a formulator For e.g. working for a supplier either in the technical team or the marketing/sales team or even be a product developer. In general, apply for jobs in the industry and work your way up to be a formulator 😊

리아쌤 안녕하세요! 전 한국에 살고 있는 중학생인데요 여드름이 많아서 피부과도 다니고 여드름 약도 바르고 그러고 있어요. 그런데 제가 프리메라 알파인 베리 워터리 젤 크림 과 리더스 메디유 아미노 에이치에이 클렌저를 같이 사용하게 되었는데 무엇 때문인지 피부가 몰라보게 좋아졌어요! 그래서 무엇 때문일지 너무 궁금해요🤔 크림은 원래 젤 크림이 아닌 그냥 프리메라 알파인 베리 워터리 크림을 사용했었는데 젤 크림을 사용하면 번들거림이 사라진다고 하길래 젤 크림을 사용하게 되었어요. 그리고 클렌저는 AHA, BHA, PHA가 들어있다고 그래서 사용하게 되었는데 사용 후 살짝의 당김이랑 따가움이 있었어요ㅠ 세안하고 스킨을 바르면 따갑더라고요.. 클렌저는 하루에 한 번씩 일주일 정도 사용했어요! 피부가 좋아져서 클렌저 사용을 그만해야 하는 것인지 아닌지 너무 고민되네요😭

thank you so much for making this video Liah! I am interesting in pursuing a career as a cosmetic formulator, but what discourages me is the lack of "relevant" work experience (e.g.: formulating in general). I'm amazed that Debra worked for these cosmetic companies with a background in material science engineering. I was under the impression that a background in chemistry or biology is more preferred (and of course experience in formulation). How do someone like me with lab experience get my foot in the door at a company that specialize in cosmetics? At the end of the day does it all boil down to networking?
As she said, Materials Science is really broad and closely related to Chemistry, Chemical & Mechanical Engineering, etc. So I can see how her experience in the field might have contributed to her getting an opportunity to work in cosmetics
she also graduated from MIT and cornell with a PHD. that definitely looks good too lmao

Am sure networking helps a lot too. And I think people from pharmacy backgrounds get into this field too. It's all very interesting.
big cosmetic companies tend to like phd's and masters. like because it looks good, and since her schooling being MIT and cornell? definitely looked amazing on paper.
