It’s good to see someone finally dissecting Housers playing. I’ve been waiting for this for 25 years. Such a unique player that does not get any respect from the mainstream guitar community.
Excellent! Thank you for that. Please keep the Houser Panic coming. I don't know what is better, hearing you explain everything or seeing how much you enjoy listening to it. No music has ever moved me more deeply than Houser era Widespread Panic.

WSMFP!! Awesome...thank you, Michael. From their first album, and still one of their best, in my opinion. I first saw them in July 1989 at The Nick in Birmingham with Col. Bruce and & ARU opening. They officially released the Space Wrangler album shortly after that. Then I saw them a couple months later at The Nick again; then again at The Nick; then a couple months later in Tallahassee; Montgomery; Panama City; and so on and so on haha ... and countless times since! RIP Brother Mikey🎸
Great video. My buddy and I used to sit up all night watching Panic and breaking down Mikey’s amazing work. I saw them in Memphis in ‘92 for the first time. I’ve traveled the country and made lots of lasting friends seeing about 114 shows! Their music has been a big part of my life. Thanks!
Wow, this is so great seeing someone respond to WSP "technically speaking". It's like, "wait, what did he just play?!! Was that a D? Wait, did he come in on the f? They are starting on G!!! Haha! I don't know the technicalities of music scales, but I know Hauser & WSP touched me deeply with this "irregular" music, over 350 times. NOBODY played like Hauser. And nobody played With Hauser like JB and the boys. Bet you never heard such fans in all your life either!
That moment at 13:40 is what EVERY Mikey era Panic fan loved about this band. From the twang to the absolute rocking funky groove that carries out the rest of the song. Chill bumps everywhere when he hits that final bend. Dave just killing it the entire time.
Great work Michael. Love the content and inspiration you create for us viewers. Panic brings the jam and the soul. Love JBs voice,so sweet and pure all while being gritty and dirty. Jb sounds like he's gargling a glass full of dirt right after he ate a piece of 30 year old beef jerky soaked in whiskey. Truly one of a kind.
I just joined this channel and I love the content. I love how you look at all sorts of genres of music and even add some theory in there. Love it and keep up the good work
@@Guitargate In reference to your volume pedal comment, it was a HUGE part of his sound. But one of those things that works far better in a large arena or outdoor setting. Sounds different here; most likely due to this being on Austin City Limits and maybe the sounds were more direct and it doesn't quite have the same effect. However, he used to stand up while playing; but used that volume pedal so much he injured his other leg. From that point forward he never playing standing up again.
Keep the Panic coming my friend. Request "The Waker" and "Ain't Life Grand" You made my day. One word for you Sir, Professor. You are the Professor. Panic has never been the same since Mikey's passing, and you helped me put into words, why.........they didn't get in each others way. Been struggling for years how to put that to words. Wow. Thanks
Great video! I’m a long time panic fan and always enjoyed both Jimmy and Mikeys playing. Interesting to hear your analysis on what he is doing. Keep the channel rockin!
You just explained what I feel when I listen to this song. I love it and will definitely listen to more reviews. I think Houser is way better and deeper than anyone even realized. Thanks for the video.
Panic is one of my favorite bands to work on pushing and pulling time. Schools is so pronounced in their mix it makes it fun to play along with that monster groove! 🔥🎧🎸🎶#WSMFP!
It’s interesting to hear you describe this music from a teachers standpoint when Houser didn’t even know scales or theory. He just played. He made his own sound. He may have been playing scales, jumping from mixo to Dorian, minors and majors, flats and fifths, but I promise you he wouldn’t be able to tell what the heck you’re talking about. That my friend is a musician on another level that can’t be taught. It can be dissected, but never replicated. He was one of a kind.
Love the show Michael I’m a 70 year old beginner to guitar, I love your format and help in understanding guitar , I’m an expat from London JJ , keep up the good work/ play.
Michael, u asked once why he sits and plays. Well its because of his use of the volume pedal, his leg/foot would go numb during the show. They had a run of semi aocustic shows back in the where they all sat and played. He found that sitting helped with the numbness so he continued to sit for all their gigs after that.
This is my favorite band i fallowed them in the early 90's they are amazing I'm so glad you got turned on to them Mikey and JB they just flew together and there's no other sound like Mikey the way he used his pedals with his feet the whole band I still listen to them to this day ✌️
Great videos. They used to say it felt like getting sucked into a blackhole backwards when Panic got chugging. The fluttering of the volume pedal was likely a big part of that along with the almighty lingering lead.

As for the Volume acting as a wah pedal ... yep that and an actual Wah pedal used in conjunction with another. Mike is the only one I've ever known to use this method exclusively. You can't really find a copy on TH-cam, but you can on Panicstream. www.panicstream.com/vault/widespread-panic-09081995-raleigh-nc/ Listen to the Travelin' Light. In the middle where Houser gets to do his "constructed" jams, right before JoJo comes in with the keys... listen to how Houser uses Wah and Volume in conjunction with another. It is by far the most intense best example of this... thus making this version of Travelin' Light my all time favorite. All of Mike's jams, intros, signature licks and jams were always tight, and the listener was always able to anticipate when he was going back into his construction. It's when he really put the gas down and you'd be anticipating him letting off and didn't... There were numerous times back in the late 90s to 2002 that I had to turn off the track I was listening to as it simply got too intense for my ear to follow. Thanks for posting this. I really love that you got back to Mikey. I don't subscribe to channels on TH-cam. I just clicked subscribe to yours.
Great pick, Michael! I’m guessing Herring is a bit more fun for the classically trained musician in you to dig into, but what a great tune. I’m always blown away by how much emotion Mikey could pull out of very minimal scale runs. Watching him almost looks like he’s moving slower than the rest of the band’s energy sometimes. The sitting allowed him to set up camp on that volume pedal and get that organic trem effect, as he was well known for. These guys are such magicians at filling up the sound spectrum and transitioning grooves/times within a song. Thank you!
Few things: 1) there is no acoustic guitar in that song. The lead singer, John Bell does set up his sound where it's somewhere between an acoustic and an electric The Semi hollow body, Washburn guitars, and Line six amp that he's known for. He does a lot of strumming that Mikey indeed works his magic around. It's a duo sound that came from there dual act back in college in Athens. It's a chemistry that simply cannot be bought or sold and you can't put a price on grinding all those hours playing together Before they built the band. 2) Mikey is known widely as the master of the volume pedal. He began using one even with an acoustic set up back in his early college days or even perhaps high school. He plays the volume pedal on every single song that he's ever played on and does use it like a wall, which is completely unique to him. Mikey was a genius, and I am convinced that he wanted to create a sound that nobody could Duplicate his own unique pentatonic scale, and a couple of unique petals that are hard to find and are not manufactured any longer. Dave Schools was real critical about Mikey never branching out his playing style and technique to encompass those adopted by many players. I do not agree with Dave Schools. I believe it being the best at what you do individually and not trying to be a jack of all trades, and I also believe that Mikey encompass that same thought. And he was the very best at being only him and his unique wonderful sound.
