    If there is a robot that will dust my house or clean the bathroom, I will mortgage my house to pay for it. If not, I will wait.

      LOL! Don't mortgage the house Kara!

      I live in New Mexico so between the wind and my slacker dogs tracking dust into the house the chore is endless. We get so much dust that most of us don't really bother dusting,we just tolerate it. I might not mortgage the house, maybe a couple of the dogs.

    As before, always choose local control over cloud where possible.
    There will always be issues in the smart home space with companies and products shifting focus or disappearing.

    They should incorporate alexa /google into overhead lights, ceiling mounts. Same for speakers. Create a clean space. Also smart home devices need to function off grid. No internet needed. More secure.

      There were a few speaker/light combos actually! They didn't go so well, but I thought it was a good idea too

    Great insights, Brian. I hope to see a transformation to Matter/Thread, but think this will be multi-year and vendor by vendor. With the latest release of SmartThings firmware and app updates, most of the things that were broken or inconsistent are working again! Plus, finally a hub backup system. So SmartThings is out of my doghouse. I agree that there will be a lot of winners and losers due to Matter/Thread and lots more consumer adoption if/when it rolls out. One of the things that slows down every smart home purchase I make is searching for its compatibility with SmartThings and Amazon. If the consumers can simply buy an item without wondering WHAT it will work (and having to hunt down the Z-wave/Zigbee or proprietary communication) with because it (via Matter/Thread) will work with everything, that will remove a huge point of resistance to people buying "smart" stuff. And if the lightbulb or the light switch prices comes down to something closer to a regular bulb or light switch, that will help too. Keep up the good work!

      @AutomateYourLife  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm glad to hear ST's working for you! You're right on the transformation of Matter/Thread too. Multi-year, and by company in a lot of cases (which...wasn't supposed to be the case)

    Thanks for sharing your projections on 2024 automation. I always appreciate your insightful videos. How did you set up the ChatGPT to interact with you at the beginning? That was an excellent demo and I think worth doing a longer video explanation on. I did it with a Siri shortcut, but it was nowhere near as good as what you showed.

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Jay, I could do a quick demo of that if folks are interested! It's really just the Chat GPT app downloaded and then I hit the little headset button on the right before I get into that chat with the assistant! You could do it in a matter of minutes!

    Loved the video Bri as always. Always look forward to seeing what “may” become available to us all. Looking forward to having my very own voice assistant modelled upon my wife, in the fact that in its own mind will always be right with the introduction of AI assistance. Just hoping that the bigger platforms such as Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings etc don’t decide to simply do their own thing but make compatibility easier with less errors within routines and that devices don’t simply disappear.
    Keep up the great work, you always supply enthusiasm in abundance which really helps within the smart home scene.

    Nice and thoughtful post, Brian. I think you'll be more right than wrong in the coming year. I think Matter is way overhyped and for me, it hasn't done a single thing I really needed, even though I have a number of Matter devices. Give me the likes of Lutron and Aqara that already work with almost everything. Video is interesting. High (4K+) video requires large file sizes and higher streaming bandwidth than many have. 1080 is a good compromise for speed, but of course, isn't enough for some details (license plates). A camera that stores locally at 4K+ and streams at 1080 would work well for my needs. I want Aqara to come out with a good outdoor cordless/solar camera that works with the same services as their indoor cameras. I think many of us are getting a bit of "smart home fatigue" and it will be a challenge for folks like you to keep it interesting and fun. I know you can do it and will do it. Once again, Happy New Year!

Also, I would love to see that improved Zigbee thing they were talking about come to fruition. Maybe they'll make it a priority now that Matter is having some problems.

    The funny thing about saying every year there are changes, it always looks like there are changes, but in reality often the changes are barely incremental. I think AI is a big change for the home. AI is also an area that needs very careful consideration as it could be dangerous if left to get out of hand.

    Brian, where do things stand on Local Voice Control with Alexa and/or Eero? Recently, we had our new fiber internet setup go down for a number of hours. I thought from googling that Alexa and Eero had provided a method to switch to Local Voice Control via the zigbee hubs built-in, but I found the online info to not match my experiences. I am not interested in the M3 Hub if it's already included in what I already have. What did you learn about Alexa and/or Eero's Local Voice Control? Can you do a video on it?

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They don't really stand anywhere...
      Voice based local control has never come together. You could potentially do local control with the ZigBee hub, but not by voice!
      Does that help??

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Early! I wasn't sure it was happening till more recently.
      I don't think much will separate brands, that's the thing. Like basic bulbs...that will turn into the listing that makes the most sense for the Walmarts of the world.

    A more conversational voice assistant experience has been prophesied for some time now, but it feels within reach now with the rise in functionality of GPT & large language models, I think that will bring more people into the smart home community.
    However I don’t think most smart home users continue to use their voice assistants as their primary control method when they get deeper into smart home building
    For those users (of which I consider myself one), I think AI is more likely to be utilised to make increasingly contextual automation suggestions based upon a users behaviours & use of their home

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You usually have a good read on how people will use this stuff! I am still hoping that the contextual nature of it leads us to a place of it being easy to control our homes. Then I think people will rely on complex automation less, and that would be just fine with me!

    For Amazon, I hope they layer it as don't need a LLM to tell the time and it passes those (here is what I found on the web) responses to the LLM instead. However, given current money grabs and loss in some divisions, Alexa may be moved from a loss leader and offer the LLM experience as a bolt-on for few more of those precious dollars onto Prime, like advert-free bolt-on's coming.
    It is the local open-source voice experience I and many are after, cutting the chains of service dependence as much as possible.

    • @kielhawkins9529
      @kielhawkins9529 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Honestly I’d be willing to fork over a few bucks a month if the experience was good enough.
      What I want is Alexa to use local control for smart home stuff. Local home assistant connection and control would be amazing and then cloud for other inquiries that are more complex.

    I agree matter does not matter! I didn't realize anything was broken Z wave has worked for years for me with zero issues. I buy a Z wave device. I pair it with my hub. I'm done. Personally, I avoid anything that's wifi connected, clogging up my router. That's why I have Z wave. I recently made the jump from smart things to home assistant, built my own raspberry pi 4 Installed the software, and I have had zero issues! I'm currently looking for a replacement for my Amazon thermostat, Because it does not work with smart things or any other ecosystem for that matter. If anybody has any suggestions for a good looking and responsive Z wave thermostat, I would love to hear it. I'm actually looking into building my own because I've been unable to find one.

    Some very good insights. Some other things that might be worth discussing in 2024:
    How do companies reconcile subscription fatigue with the need for recurring revenue?
    Is there a path for Thread to succeed even if Matter fails?
