I got one for Christmas and it sat in our Harrisburg, PA basement until about 1971. I lobbyed parents hard for the Jimmy Jet--surprised the original supermarket price was $7.77. I thought it cost $13.
My parents threw it out because I had taken it apart to see how it worked. So simple. A light bulb inside a rotating plastic cylinder painted with aerial map, the plastic plane positioned over cylinder steered by the wheel and covered by a screen.
Fascinating back in the 60s! Loved it!

Wow! Im 62 years old now.
I remember getting this for Christmas in the early 1960s. The best of gifts!
Serious fun, if not the root of my OCD disorder.

I still remember mine. Looking at toys today I think the best ones were made in the '60-'70s. I try to find good ones for my grandchildren and it's challenging.

I remember for one Christmas I got one of these it was the only gift I asked for when I unwrapped it I was so excited and played it for hours that day and then the unthinkable happened it broke. My dad was so mad at me he blamed me for breaking it took it out and smashed it. I was devastated to say the least. I eventually forgot about it but every Christmas even though I am 62 now on Christmas morning I still remember opening it and the fun but then the anguish. I kinda still on Christmas morning think Santa will deliver one to me. Sorry about the long comment, but good memories

I am sorry your cool toy broke, it was not your fault, you loved it. I am 57 and still remember with fondness how much fun
I had with it! Jimmy Jet and my first bike with the banana seat are my two favorite toys as a boy--thank you, Daddy.

Please don't feel bad. I had one too!!! I loved it but the lever to turn it on/off somehow easily broke off. My uncle replaced it with an wooden ice cream stick. The toy was a favorite of mine and my friend Mark . I used to let him hold on to it overnight. He said he needed to fly some undercover night missions. I hope his mother didn't catch him playing with Jimmy Jet when he was suppose to be sleeping!!! Lol!!!!!!!! Mark and I were both five years old and we really enjoyed Jimmy Jet. I don't remember how it finally broke down.

I had one as a kid. It is worth about 5 minutes of fun. The screen shows the same images over and over. You really don't "fly" the plane. You just move the shadow from left to right and from right to left. That's it. After a couple of days, my brother and I stopped playing with it... although my friends would play with it, for a little while, when they came over.

I googled this after seeing one in the background on an episode of Pawn Stars. It instantly brought back forgotten memories of something I played with for hours on end. Must have made an impact on me....I went on to be and fighter pilot, and then later, an airline pilot.

I was born in '63, so it was just slightly before my time. I don't remember how, but I got one that was broken. Probably a hand-me-down from a cousin. I had never seen one before (or since till I thought to look for a video!) Even though nothing on it worked, I still thought it was the coolest toy. My friends and I (and my younger sister) would play with it for hours!

My grandmother bought me one of those for Christmas, there are alot of old classic toys that I wished I kept and took care of. This is was good toy but not much to it and I liked to take everything apart. My brother got some sliver robot for Christmas 1961 with a flashing square dome on top of his head. All our childhood toys are long gone.

I had one for 3 months in 65- , BEING VERY SAFETY MINDED I ONLY FLEW IN CALM WEATHER. The F A A came & took it-without even a warning ! They said that people were complaining that i was flying too low-causing the window breakage throughout the county. I know it wasnt me as i never kicked in my afterburners near town. I knew who was responsible for the damages though,-it was my own brother ! He got his slingshot taken the next week . Pee Wee Herman had a whole fleet of em !

Wow! that's about $62.00 or more in today's money. This toy looks like junk too. It would keep the kids attention for like a half hour maybe. Play with it 2 or 3 times become bored and that's it. For $62 bucks, I'll pass. It does nothing to excite the kid, really. Now if that was a real TV screen and it had some real games or missions to complete, like video games today, then you just might have something.

I used to turn the bunk bed I shared with my brother into the command center of a submarine or a spaceship just by hanging a sheet from the top bunk and using my imagination. "It does nothing to excite the kid" ? We used our imaginations mostly.
