Completed using infinite energy and high jumps. I wouldn't try it without and risk seizures/brain damage/stroke, etc...
Well, what do I say about this? It's an "environmentally-friendly" game that looks like it was made by a bunch of spaced-out people on magic mushrooms while being inspired by Rainbow Islands.
Initially, it starts off as a bit of mindless fun, if you can figure out what is what from the total clusterf*** graphics.
What I could make out is that you're this little guy who looks like a doll. You have to climb the ledges up to the very top to complete the level while shooting pretty much anything that moves.
One touch by any of these things will knock you down a couple of ledges. Some can't be killed, like the acid droplets, skulls, and killer whales. Stationary things like the telephones and what looks like the pod out of 2001: A Space Odyssey can knock you down also but can be shot to give you higher jumps or better weapons. If you shoot the blue flowers, they expand and create moving platforms to help you up.
Some killed baddies leave a heart which changes colour. Collect these to fill in your hearts in the status panel. When you have all of them... I don't know, I think you get an extra life or something. Don't get the grey one at the end of the colour-shift or you lose them all.
This was voted one of the worse games on LemonAmiga, though I've seen much worse, as some heart seems to have gone into it, in spite of how all-over-the-place it is.

The game's box art claims the game to have edible graphics. I believe that they WERE edible, because NOW, they look digested.

I like to think they took rainbow islands, ate it, got sick, and diarrhea'd on the floor and puked on said diarrhea, and this is what the mess looked like.

Okay, but it takes TALENT to make graphics that look this cursed. I would've lost sleep had I seen this as a kid. I simply cannot fathom how somebody conjured up these psychedelic batshit insane graphics & sound effects inside their head without assistance from Lucifer himself. These ungodly sights & sound would rock anyone under the age of ten to the very core. I'm just positively baffled.
Lots of psychedelics- this game has a lot of ties to rave and club culture, and the story involves you going to a "temple of the mind" then in the last world literally being in the "mind-scape", I wouldnt be surprised if the graphics in this game took from real life experience

Here’s my analysis: Top Banana at its heart is a game about environmentalism. The manual claims that your goal is to spread enough love to stop global warming. The game starts off in a forest and as it goes on, you witness the world becoming increasingly distorted and hellish over time until the end of the game where we see the world crumble apart. I didn’t think the laughing has any significance as that’s what you hear when you lose, but that’s when I realized: your character’s journey was futile. As the world ends, we see an image of a smiling face as if to sarcastically say “at least he’s happy”. The way I see it, no matter how much love you spread, the world will still change unless we actually do something about it. All the main character was willing to do to stop her demise was “spread love” in a situation that required much more than that. Thus, she died.

Some games try to go for that whole "fever dream" look as an aesthetic thing, and they all fail to capture it.

Mother 3 is better than top banana. Mother 3 graphics look great for a gba game, but top banana’s graphics are like setting a trash can on fire, then throwing a cup full of 💩 into the fire.
Jesus Christ this is the most horrifying fucking video game I've ever seen; bar none.
Right off the bat, we've got an unsettling intro of a terrible techno song with bizarre flashing and inverted visuals (not shown here, mercifully). Now on to the game proper: there's the dissonant and scrambled ambient "music", the massively unfitting sound effects, the creepy doll-ish player character, the garbled and messy environments, the enemies with graphics of wildly different origins, the spooky message at the end of levels (e.g. BEWARE BEHAVE"), and the frightening inversion/slowdown mechanic in later levels... all topped off with that "ending" consisting of a creepy fucking clown picture.
This is literally like somebody tore a video game straight out of a creepypasta.

This game isn’t even a horror game yet it’s the most horrifying game I’ve seen!
The only way I can explain the ending is that the big after the final boss is a fall into Hell. The laughing at the end of the stage is the final boss laughing at how it tricked you thinking you had won. The weird ball patterned creature is Satan, taking on the form of some kind of twisted mockery of a clown. The final laugh is Satan himself, as he has claimed yet another soul for his collection.
This is why you should play with a cross and holy water.

The weird thing is, the laughing at the end of the game is the same laugh as the Game Over laughing, implying that even after beating the game you still die

As a "kids" platformer game made to be "environmentally-friendly", this game is god awful and is an assault on the eyes and brain.
Now as a horror game, this is fucking genius and is so disturbed, it works. I mean, you have disturbing sound design, monsters with the skull head looking things, the red pole things that look like they have weird pus on them which makes that shit look fleshy as and the 3rd boss with the scarab looking thing that honestly looks like a skull to me, and the whole "circus" level and how it all just looks like a meaty, fleshy hellscape, aswell as that ending with the laughing and such. Its insane and its crazy this was all mad by a small team of drugged out of their mind dudes.
Honestly I kinda dig the vibes. An amazing work of unintentional surreal horror That "eh" sounds like something out of LISA

This game has an indiscernibly evil feeling to it. It feels like the developers accidently opened some portal to a Lovecraftian type phenomenon/being.
Out of the several hundred Amiga games I played back in the day this one always stood out. Stood out as maybe the only game that was viscerally bad, I am talking about on a physical level. I can feel this one in my bones and it fills me with real revulsion. I can think of worse games, that are conventionally less fun or just plain broken. like Superman 64. This game is definitely more playable but it is REPULSIVE. I have to admit that all these years later I kind of admire it, it transcends being merely a bad game and attains a level of concentrated ugliness visually, aurally and conceptually that is rarely attained on any game on any system.
Is rather play superman 64 or the st game for Atari then play this.

Okay, so after looking over this game and its history there are a few things that kinda bothers me. First, this game has the audacity of being quoting of being better than Mario and Sonic according to a quote on the front cover art. Secondly, this game apparently has some relations to environmentalism as others pointed out, which make me wonder if the graphical style is meant to be a deconstructions of that notions of being helplessness. Third, the attempt of parallax scrolling is actually hurting my eyes very bad from the indescribable amount of color palates. Oh yeah, I also found out some positive reviews from magazines such as Datormagazin. Also what is those sound effects?

At the time I bought this seizure-inducing game original with its pretty (recycled) box and all.
I will not defend it of course, since it is pretty "heavy", as a game, but its concept was not bad. Technically everything was random, and the graphic tiles could be replaced with your own and saved - the game would simply replace the original ones with your own, thus being really the first 100% user-customisable game.
Dunno if the sound samples could be replaced as well but still, hey, the intro-random (as in totally random) techno video was pretty cool with upbeat tempo and phat tunes :D as bad as it was, it shouldn't be forgotten.

This looks like the unholy lovechild of Animal Crossing and Rainbow Islands if they decided to hang out with Raoul Duke and Al Gore beforehand. And somehow I can't stop being fascinated by it.
Coming back to this video after 3 years, and I’ve got to say I have an odd appreciation for this game. It’s so unsettling, but it reminds of an experimental film or project one may find on the internet.
The gameplay is not great, and the textures make my eyes hurt, but it’s somewhat impressive they were able to make the textures look like that. The stages getting progressively distorted especially in context of the game’s “story” is also interesting too. I like the music that plays at 25:38, it sounds like something that would play in Yume Nikki or another RPGMaker horror game. If this game was released back in the early 2010’s, I have no doubt the internet would’ve been all over it.
This really looks like a game that AVGN should try sometime. It'd be interesting to hear his thoughts on it.

No need to romhack, the game's assets are all replaceable files, and there's even instructions on how to replace them

Honestly, as someone who grew up with playing bootleg games before getting my 2ds, this game gives me an odd sense of nostalgia. I can't help but feel something familiar when seeing games with eye melting visuals, because the fake games I used to play looked really similar.

In the final level, the little hopping enemy looks like Charlotte from Puella Magi.
Same big pink "candy wrapper" head shape. Given Charlotte's hellish vibe, it's pretty appropriate here.

My theory is that the developers were forced into making this game and gave the middle finger to their superiors by making the game extremely unsettling, ugly, and unplayable.
I found it quite playable. Stylistic even.

I dont blame you for hacking in infinite HP, but dear god, what happens when you do get hurt is just as disturbing. That face down there is your HP bar. When you get hit in normal play, parts of the top and bottom get cropped out. When the face is completely gone, the ending laugh plays and you get sent back to the start of the first world. Yep, this game has zero checkpoints.

I always look back on this "game" every now and then and feel some sort of strange, unknown emotion that is hard to describe. Like this game was never meant to exist in this reality and we were never meant to see it with our own eyes.

Heheh, I played a demo of this when I was a kid, I wasn't hugely impressed, a good thing as the full game would probably have given me seizures! However, I did "borrow" some of the sound effects which I still use today!

There's a freeware one on the Amiga (forget the name) that is drawn in squiggles. Even worse. The problem with this is that it hurts your eyes.
When I look at this game I see nothing but a deconstruction of classic euro platformers. Ask yourself if this is really any weirder than James Pond or Jet Set Willy. It just hasn't bothered to cover up the absurdity at all. Great stuff.
