Oh my God, that companion ability mechanic was ripped straight from mass effect 1.
Personally i think the theory that it was painstakingly made to be as safe as possible may be right on the money. Characters dont have any controversial opinions, like being anti-mage or pro-mage like they would be back in the older games. The party members especially seem fine with each other. Sure there's 'arugements' but its all resolved very quickly and barely hangs over them for long enough for it to be considered a 'conflict'.
Everyone, including myself had thrown around a quote from SkillUp's review. But it does sort of encasulate the writing well. Every conversation feels like HR is in the room.
This safe approach to the game i think shows in thr combat as well. It feels very 'open world Ubisoft' like. The actual RPG mechanics aren't particularly deep and most of the skill tree abilities are passives. I've still played it and enjoy it mostly, but Veilguard feels like its a 'junk food' kind of game. When it REALLY shouldn't be.
The true ending spits in the the face of everything that was done in inquisition, and pretty much says “you know that trespasser dlc? , ye non of it mattered” and because of that it destroyed Solas as a character
oh that's always good to hear /s
And Morrigan. And Mythal. And probably a lot of people's Inquisitor too. And don't even get me started on the post credits scene. 😂 The whole game is a joke.
One major criticism from what I've seen also for the dialogue is not just the lack of emotion in the writing, but the writing consistently saying some random plot mcguffin every other sentence as the "important thing" from each character as if it's made for people with short term memory loss because they don't know how to emphasize the weight of said thing being important.
It shows that the writers didn't have faith in their audience's comprehension of the story and they feel the need to spoon feed them.
In a game series known for it's dialog, it's odd that that turns out to be the worst part of the game. Not in a good way. Glad I skipped it, don't want to soil my memories of the REAL Dragon Age.
It absolutely feels “sanitized” and it feels a bit off since you can’t have any real discourse.
I happened to stumble upon a short involving Davrin that played upon his Grey Warden status that felt so devoid of impact despite the context that it hurt to watch.
It's pretty telling that they just gave up on making any dlc at all
I love DA:Origins. DA2 was fine, and DA:I was pretty bad, in my opinion. I can't even remember anything from Inquisition, and I completed it more recently than the other 2, but I pretty vividly remember several scenes from both of them.
All that being said, I had no hope for this game even before the trailer. I've watched playthroughs for the lols, and I would say worse than your criticisms of the writing is that they talk down to the player and the other characters. It's like they're all trying to talk to children. I also can't stand modern lingo in medieval fantasy. It's fine to explore the themes they explore, but use a fantasy parallel instead of Twitter terms.
Yeah I get that feeling too, sometimes the dialogue does feel condescending and I don't know if it's intentional or they straight up don't know how to communicate outside of sounding like this, a lot of the dialogue is either bland and forgettable exposition dumps or at least since I kept playing after making this, becoming more and more just offputting
Origins peak, 2 utter trash, inquisition mid to just below average. At least imo. So yeah most of the series I've not enjoyed this
@@morriganrenfield8240 I'm pretty much with you Morrigan, the only one I really enjoyed a ton was Origins though I really liked the vibe of Inquisition, that game just got too grindy for me
@@morriganrenfield8240 I understand people who trash 2, I won't really defend it. I haven't played it since it released so it could just be the fact that I remember a couple of high points for story and characters as to way I just think it's fine.
My entire time playing Inquisition was spent asking myself "Why am I playing a single player MMO not called .Hack" Maybe I would be more forgiving now a days, but it's too bland for me to want to find out lol.
I'm more forgiving of Inquisition, but I can ABSOLUTELY see why people don't like it. It's really bloated and only about 25% of the game (not counting DLC) is actually necessary. It's just REALLY bloated for the sake of adding on playtime. Like, you can probably beat it in less than 30 hours (or even less) if you ignore all side content except for whatever influence points you need to grind to unlock plot quests.
