    I work for VIPKID, please don't take this job as an "easy job"
    Respect the fact that parents pay money for this service, and that children are very dedicated.
    Go into this with the heart to teach, not to travel the world easily

    • @tryingcake101
      @tryingcake101 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I also work for VIPKID. Yes, it can be looked at as easy if you don't take it seriously. Prepping and props are serious business. Developing these kids language skills affects their futures. This is to be taken seriously. Fun, yes. Serious? Absolutely!

      @PhilSmithBonkers 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just started looking into this VIPKID program and I thought a lot of videos talk too much about travel and all the neat stuff a teacher can do, and didn't emphasize the benefits of helping the kids. Thanks, Jesus!

    • @tryingcake101
      @tryingcake101 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phil - I love working with the kids. You develop a personal relationship with them. And I get so much in return. I had a kid just last week tell me, "I love you, teacher!" Melted my heart!! Monday a kid started class by holding a crudely written sign that said, "Thanksgivday!" I didn't tell him he totally screwed that up. I clapped and said, "Thank you!!!! That is wonderful!! Thank you!" He was only 6. He tried so hard and it meant something to him to celebrate with me.I love my kids!!

    • @tryingcake101
      @tryingcake101 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh - and the schedule is NOT as flexible as they would have you believe. If you can't pull all nighters - you won't earn enough to matter. It's flexible in that you can work or not work, But they have limited daytime hours

    • @PhilSmithBonkers
      @PhilSmithBonkers 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the reply, Jump On My Wagon, it is good to hear what others say about this program! At this point I'm in the dark and I'm trying to learn enough to make a plan in order to move forward with this. I'm retired so I have a lot of flexibility regarding hours, and I think I might be a good "grandfather" image for them (I hope, lol).

    I've done some online teaching for a company based in South Korea called Carrot Global. This online teaching thing is a big deal right now...but when it comes to tax time, you pay them as if you have your own business in the States.

    • @KrisD007
      @KrisD007 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Angelwriter Creations you pay the US IRS as if you didn’t pay any taxes that a small business pays every year to operate because YOU are a small business. You could pay quarterly. You need an accountant so you know what you can deduct.

    what if you don't have a 4 year degree? Are their other ways?

  • @Shadow72eapers
    @Shadow72eapers 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Chris I really need your opinion, I'm taking my exams for TEFL right now and I'm excited to make the move for Shanghai in a few months but one thing I really want to do is become a digital nomad and I'm currently learning skills on the side like coding and Chinese (my girlfriend is Chinese so it's a huge help). I'm doing this as a sideline because I want to create my own business and create my own loophole to not doing college but one thing I'm noticing is how everything requires a bachelors degree, every opportunity that you could use as a foundation to get you to that "loophole" of creating your own way needs a bachelors degree. If I'm teaching in Shanghai for a couple years and become a great teacher for example I don't get why I need a bachelors to do something like this which would've been perfect, idk Chris I'm really curious on your input.Every digital nomad I see inevitably mentions they're freshly graduated from university, I'm 23 years old right now if that helps.

    • @nicolecooper1569
      @nicolecooper1569 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cambly is another online ESL platform that doesn't require a degree; however it doesn't pay as much as VIPKid, so it's only sustainable in low-cost countries.

    • @Shadow72eapers
      @Shadow72eapers 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Nicole! I think the best way to go about it is when I'm actually in Shanghai see what options there are, I'm sure they're out there I just need to be there and network to find them.

    • @nicolecooper1569
      @nicolecooper1569 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem. It's doable to teach without a degree. Some employers value the certification over the degree. Good luck!

    • @ChristheFreelancer
      @ChristheFreelancer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isaiah Santiago. It is a shame that they don't consider you without a degree but I would shop around and look for other opportunities. I know that as a freelancer working for small to medium size business clients for example, a degree doesn't really mean anything.

    Great interview. I looked into doing this since I live here in Chiang Mai and I was informed that to do this from Thailand that you must have a work permit. So I went to several places online and none of them will do what is needed for a person to get a work permit. Then I found out, that if I had my own company, then I would be able to obtain a work permit and teach online in Thailand. Do you know anything more on this that might help?

    • @ChristheFreelancer
      @ChristheFreelancer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No idea sorry

    • @NeihuDog
      @NeihuDog 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      May I ask who informed you that you need a work permit in Thailand to do this on-line teaching in Thailand?

    • @lifeinchiangmai3072
      @lifeinchiangmai3072 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lawyer told me, if you signed up outside Thailand to teach online, then came to Thailand then it was considered a home country job and you only paid taxes to your home country. But if you are living in Thailand and you signed up to teach online, then you have to obtain a work permit and pay Thai taxes on your income. And this goes for any job. The lawyer said Thailand is looking more into the internet world, as right now it's a big grey area. But bottom line, Thailand says, if you work and make money in Thailand you must have a work permit and pay taxes. I found out recently, since I have a home country company, that I can run my online teaching thru them and do it. The funny thing is, I know people that have work permits and are doing it and I know people that don't have work permits and are doing it. Both have been doing it for years. So if you don't go around and brag about doing it, since it is online, then how would someone find out.

    • @tim2knowhim
      @tim2knowhim 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I taught for VIPKID from Phuket, Thailand for 4 months last year. I didn't do anything as far as taxes in Thailand, but I did have to pay US taxes (including Social Security) on all my earnings. Last year, I taught from the USA, Thailand, and Taiwan (all for VIPKID) and this year I've taught from Taiwan, Turkey, Spain, the USA and now Colombia (still for VIPKID). It's a great job if you like flexibility, good pay, and the option to live pretty much anywhere in the world (with a good internet connection, of course).

    So, Stephen Fry or a professor with a PHD in English Language teaching at Oxford/Cambridge or the Queen of England need not apply. Seems weird but I have friends in Chiang Mai who are Thai and send there kids to a school which specifically teaches American English. Must be the movies.

    • @wasabiwitt2876
      @wasabiwitt2876 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its a business. I teach in China, the kids market is basically a horse and pony show. The parents want their kids to sound like Americans when they speak English, and sadly the course consultants in every single ESL company here reinforces this bogus misguided belief for money. If you are North American and female the schools here will pay you thousands of dollars a month to teach ages 3-10 because of outdated sexist beliefs.

    • @wasabiwitt2876
      @wasabiwitt2876 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They don't want Stephen Fry, they want someone whose going to baby their child, and never do anything overly harsh or questionable in their presence. In the online format this is only doubly so because your interaction is limited to a screen with audio.

    Is it so easy? You should be properly qualified. After all there are 44 sounds to English, which native English speakers aren't aware of. There is stress, intonation, which changes meaning and an unqualified native speaker can't teach it.
