Do You Like Analogue Hardware With Digital Recall?

  • In this video I discuss my thoughts on analogue hardware that incorporates digital recall via a plugin. I wish more companies adopted this kind of advancements in technology. I understand it's a whole new side to a company but the industry is crying out for more companies to follow in the footsteps of companies like Wes Audio, Bettermaker, Freqport and McDSP.

    Well said! People who say analog hardware's "outdated" have no idea about gear like this. I'm a huge fan of WesAudio for these reasons.

      I'm literally buying every 19 inch mastering unit they make. I'll gradually replace my entire chain with all digital recall hardware. The stuff of dreams.

      I got my Wes Audio ngTubeEQ last week. You will not be disappointed. I think they should think about doing what McDSP did though and put the conversion into the unit. So you just load a plugin and the audio passes through the Thunderbolt cable. A complete rack like that would be insane

      @simeonmatthews4584 I think a few companies will go down this route. Off the top of my head freqport and mcdsp are doing this. It is good. However, it has a few flaws. If the tube EQ only had thunderbolt connection, there would be an issue of the tube EQ only being able to be position before you leave the box or once back in. You could not incorporate it into the analogue mastering chain. If you had both this wouldn't be an option. You'd just be paying for something that could add a good chunk of money onto the price and not want or need it. Additionally you'd need to use wes audio converters rather than your prestine mastering converters. Wes audio not really known for their conversion. Again adding a big price to the unit. Another issue would be let's say you had 10 mastering units all running in this way. You'd end up with 10x unnessosary conversion as well as a tone of latency. Also to transfer 10 units in this way You'd need more thunderbolt ports than currently needed. It's a brilliant concept that'll sure be implemented into some products. But I do still feel hardware needs analogue io. An option of both is cool. Maybe you could buy one or the other to keep price down.

    Hi Paul, you are right about the future of EQs and Compressors. I did returned a Goly without even opening the box for the Wes audio Eq. Just thinking of Five years from now how will the Analog gears be. Good video.

      It's 100% the future for the bigger companies. Imagine SSL bringing out a new version of the Fusion with digital recall. It's doable for them. They already have the plugin team in place. I can almost guarantee this is being worked on.

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @thisguy5611 I certainly won't be removing mine. I agree the Goly is a very special EQ. Totally different to every other EQ I own. However I think if you had one EQ, the Wes Audio Tube EQ is an EQ that does it all.

      I respect the Goly very much but playing around with the Wesaudio for a while at a friend’s studio there is a lot that it brings to the table. I mean this is a gear that can give you a tone of the Goly and other EQs . I wish I could keep the Goly but like Paul said I needed something that is all rounder. Also it does complement a lot with my Buzz eq.

      Me too, the logical thing to do is have digital recall in all their 19" rack versions. I predict SSL will be the next big company to join the digital recall family.

    I own one Wes Audio Outboard and I have Flock Patch bays in my studio. The digital side is very useful with regard to recall. But my concern is if the manufacturer stopped supporting the software or they went out of business for some reason. My non recall outboard can continue working well beyond the end of the company which built it.

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, this is the concern I think we all have. This is why companies like Wes Audio are doing the right thing. Keeping full control of the unit on the unit and never rely on the plugin. The only thing you will lose if there is no longer compatibility with the unit is recall. Companies like mcdsp heavily rely on software, which is the concern. I guess it's a case of choosing gear from companies you think will be around for years to come. I feel Flock and wes audio are ones that will be. One thing you can do with Flock is use an old external computer to run the Flock. The patch app works with computers now and let's say 10 years no longer worked with newer computers. Because it's an app outside the session you could use an old iPad or old computer to power it. These are all the things we need to think about when buying certain pieces of gear.

    Oh fun! Could you please do one video discussing your choices if you were compiling a digitally recallable mastering chain or hybrid mix chain? Thank You 🙏

    TEGELER makes also digitaly recallable hardware, tegeler schwerkraftmaschine is a vari mu mastering compressor, creme RC is pultec style EQ/SSL compressor combo.

      Yes no chance I'm getting rid of them. Yeah they have just moved to another rack as I'm installing the Wes Audio Tube EQ and Cranborne Audio HE2 in those slots. To the right I have the Hendy Amps Michelangelo XL EQ going in any day/week now.

      @AudioAnimalsStudio  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @CT-ho6si because the carnaby HE2, wes audio comp and EQ all have digital recall, I will be using them over the mix bus when mixing. Mixing always requires a lot more revisions than mastering. So it is important for me to have instant recall for mixing.

      @Synthetic-lt4ed digital recall is a relatively new concept. I wouldn't say it's oldskool. It's bridging the gap for people who like using plugins for the convenience of recall with the superior sound of analogue.
