Andy Weir is a wonderful contemporary revival of hard science fiction. It's almost like a fun science class. His Project Hail Mary doesn't disappoint either.

Great list! The expanse series was some of the most fun reading I've had in a long time! And of course Enders Game is fantastic as well. :) I've never read station 11 or red rising but am found to go grab a copy now to check out - so ty for the suggestion! Of all of these, I think Martian is the only one that I'm not super excited about. So many people love it but for some reason it was a miss for me. I didn't hate it, but just found it a little too grounded for my taste I think. It's always interesting to see how tastes can overlap and diverge :)
I understand The Martian not being everyone's cup of tea. It is a fairly basic sci-fi story. I thought it was charming though! Hope you enjoy Station Eleven and Red Rising when you get to them!

I usually don’t do this because there are so many books and series to choose from in this genre and narrowing it down to 5 can be a daunting task… But how Hyperion by Dan Simmons doesn’t make either the Classic or Modern Top 5 SciFi books you must read or you will die lists is absolutely criminal and not just in my mind…I mean every reviewer worth their salt lists Hyperion in their Top 10 SciFi of all time if not in the Top 5 so I really don’t know how you could overlook this book and series from what amounts to a Top 10 SciFi books list you must read…but you can somehow choose Station Eleven over Hyperion which is an absolute and profound insult to everyone in the world of SciFi fandom… If you or anyone reading this hasn’t read Hyperion put down and stop what you are reading now and go pick it up and start reading it or at least put it at the very top of your TBR list…to me and many others it’s only 2nd to Dune All-Time in the SciFi book genre… I am a subscriber and do enjoy your channel and your videos just totally shocked at this major oversight on your part…Keep up the good works…👍🏻

Enders Game was my first sci-fi (minus 1984 in HS) and first audio book. It started a life long love affair with both audio books and sci-fi. Glad to see it show up in one of these lists. Red Rising blew my mind away, the series is going great, looking forward to the next installment. Looking for something modern. Finished all of Dune. Finished all of Hyperion. Waiting for A Fire Upon the Deep, but I know I’ll tear through that series too. I need to buy ahead of time. Because when I finish something and have nothing to pick up immediately after, I have withdrawal symptoms.
I liked Red Risi g but good god the main character spends a LOT of time lamenting. Just page after page after page of "oh things are so bad for me. Why can't things just be easy and nice for a change? Why must life be so painful?" If you can get past all that (and he does it all through the story for various reasons) it's a really cool story.
Cixin Liu's Three Body Problem trilogy and Hyperion by Dan Simmons. It is older but it is still modern. I agree with your list and liked and aktivated an abo because of it.
Sorry to disagree with your list but, my list is way better books. 1. House of Suns 2. Children of Time 3. Chasm City 4. Old Man's War 5. Roadside Picnic All of these are considered modern.
Great video. I didn't realize Ender's Game was 1985, but I love the story, as well as Red Rising and The Martian. I need to read Station Eleven and the Expanse series. I just recently got the full expanse series in the mail, so that should help me get to it at some point this year.
It's a judgment call, but I probably wouldn't include Ender's Game as "modern" (although I'd recommend it a just a great SF book). On the other hand, I'd probably replace it with Children of Time, one of favorite books of recent years.

The Dune series and Iain M Banks culture series are the best sci-fi I've read. Terry Pratchett has a couple of Sci-fi very readable Strata and The Dark side of the Sun. Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain have Sci-fi elements, but are perhaps considered contemporary? I read Foundation a long time ago and remember finding it boring compared to Dune, but I'd played the early Dune video games before reading which may have motivated me to continue through the heavy writing. I found Ursula K LeGuin interesting, but I'm not hooked enough to read more books of hers. William Gibson's Sprawl series was great when I read it, it's really Cyberpunk. I read Snow Crash much later and it never gelled with me. I'd like to find more sci-fi with writing as enjoyable as Terry Pratchett and Dianna Wynne Jones writing.

Dick, Ursula LeGuin, Bob Silverberg, Robert Holdstock, Christopher Priest, Harlan Ellison, George Martin, Thomas Burnett Swann, Bruce Sterling ["The Artificial Kid"], Olaf Stapledon, John Varley, Jack Williamson ["Darker Than You Think"], Anna Kavan ["Ice"] or John Crowley?
Ooof I was on the struggle us for Station Eleven and I didn’t enjoy it. I would replace that with something like Dark Matter, Old Man’s War or The Humans (though not as popular). But I absolutely agree with the other selections. Nice job!
To modern sci-fi you should add, James L Cambias” a darkling sea and arkad,s world. Also W Michael Gear, the Donovan series, outpost, abandoned, pariah and unreconciled
I'm really not sure what qualifies as modern, especially since you included Enders Game. Anyway, one of my favorite stories is by Kim Stanley Robinson and the first in series was published in '92. The trilogy is: Red Mars Green Mars Blue Mars It is basically terraforming story, but way more. The state of Earth is very much changed by climate shift; flooding, desertification and poisoning. Overpopulation and resulting starvation ... so much more. Earthbound political and corporate issues as well as class issues. Many of these last issues are brought to Mars with the "pioneers" and original crews. The story progresses and we see many evolutions. Physical evolutions, mental evolutions, technological and medical evolutions. Political,social, and religious evolutions. Even from the start we see that everyone involved has a common dedication to making Mars a livable world, yet they all have their own visions of what it should become and their own priorities and morals that they each believe to be "right". This is an epic story with character developments that in some cases span many lifetimes. Plenty of action, intrigue, sacrifice, soul searching, and a touch of murder as well. 😄 To me this series is most definitely a must read. I'm not sure though if it fits in with your "category".
Still trying to find a series that will make me feel anything close to what the Red Rising trilogy did to me. Did you enjoy the two books released of the second trilogy? I’ve yet to read them because I’m afraid they will disappoint.
They are spectacular. They do, however, take some getting used to since you're not going to be with the characters you know and love as much. But it's def worth it!

I loathe this lists I just read "the three body problem" ITS AWFUL! Because someone made it into a list. that book is naive badly written and silly.I hope this time I get better luck with your list thanks. Enders game is good but "speaker for the dead" is really good.
Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth are amazing. Granted, Gideon is more reminiscent of fantasy, but the second one is a very cool sci-fi world. And the characters and their voices that author does are just magnificent. The atmosphere is there from start to finish, and the things Munier does in the second book.... Almost as cool as Quantum Thief. And Quantum Thief is just the best modern sci-fi book period
Sci fi fans are the most picky and fickle. I enjoyed the movie a lot. Movies never can be as good as the book. So you need to reasonably adjust your perspective.

I like the classics, Frankenstein--also for its back story--The Time Traveller, Olaf Stapleton First & Last Men etc. More recent "Tiger, Tiger' also named 'The Stars my Destination'. 'The Cultural' books by I think Banks and the Sci Fi sagas of Alister Reynolds. I'll try your suggests. Jack London long ago wrote the short story 'The Purple Plague. about a disease wiping out civilisation. It's pretty good. You might consider his 'The Iron Heel' as Sci Fi, it certainly was a feed in book for 1984 along with 'We' Also his 'Before Adam'. I like the river series Sci Fi fantasy whose name escapes me. There are The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury with others. I guess th series on teenagers and children set to fight each other to death is Sci Fi only closer to realistic dystopia. A good background book to read on diseases and plague as a source book is 'The Coming Plague' by Laurie Garrett published 1994. Pinned the lastest post from Laurie at the head of my Facebook timeline. If you do not know all these books you are another ill-read yank who has no thical right to be putting up videos on You Tube. There needs to be licenses for these things.
loved enders game, it was one of my first sci fi books that i read. i do recommend though that people buy it used since the author is adamantly homophobic. thiftbooks is a good site for this!

A few series that might interest you: Red Rising, The Chronicles of St Mary's, The Conqueror's Saga, and The Band. Some favorites.

Added to my list (Leviathan Wakes is the only one I've read). Just finished Dark Matter and it is a top 5 for me.
For me it was Stranger in a strange land - Orson Scott Card that pulled me into sci fi.

I just read Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion for the first time. Definitely saw the interest many people have with that series.

I give Ender's Game a 7/10, quite an overrated book. But great read for teenagers.

Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth are amazing. Granted, Gideon is more reminiscent of fantasy, but the second one is a very cool sci-fi world. And the characters and their voices that author does are just magnificent. The atmosphere is there from start to finish, and the things Munier does in the second book.... Almost as cool as Quantum Thief. And Quantum Thief is just the best modern sci-fi book period
I've heard really good things about Gideon and Harrow. Doesn't the author do some weird POV shifts? At least in the sequel?

Sci fi fans are the most picky and fickle. I enjoyed the movie a lot. Movies never can be as good as the book. So you need to reasonably adjust your perspective.
Great list, but modern? I don't think so. Nothing less than 10 years old.

Modern sci fi is terrible. Also does every hero in these books have to be a woman? I read sci fi from the 50’s and 60’s.
Red Rising is an incredibly terrible book.
I like the classics, Frankenstein--also for its back story--The Time Traveller, Olaf Stapleton First & Last Men etc. More recent "Tiger, Tiger' also named 'The Stars my Destination'. 'The Cultural' books by I think Banks and the Sci Fi sagas of Alister Reynolds. I'll try your suggests. Jack London long ago wrote the short story 'The Purple Plague. about a disease wiping out civilisation. It's pretty good. You might consider his 'The Iron Heel' as Sci Fi, it certainly was a feed in book for 1984 along with 'We' Also his 'Before Adam'. I like the river series Sci Fi fantasy whose name escapes me. There are The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury with others. I guess th series on teenagers and children set to fight each other to death is Sci Fi only closer to realistic dystopia. A good background book to read on diseases and plague as a source book is 'The Coming Plague' by Laurie Garrett published 1994. Pinned the lastest post from Laurie at the head of my Facebook timeline. If you do not know all these books you are another ill-read yank who has no thical right to be putting up videos on You Tube. There needs to be licenses for these things.
loved enders game, it was one of my first sci fi books that i read. i do recommend though that people buy it used since the author is adamantly homophobic. thiftbooks is a good site for this!
