The only thing I don’t like about winter running (western Canada) is the ground conditions. Hard black ice, slippery snow pack, clear dry pavement and slippery loose sand and gravel. And that’s all in the first few kilometers! Cleats are an option but hate them on dry pavement so I take smaller steps, and always be ready to fall so when I do it’s more gracefully and not straight down on my tailbone or wrist.
Great informative video Ben! Awesome tips for winter, thanks for putting this one together:) always love watching and seeing you sprinkle your fun positivity on everything that’s running 👍 hopefully get back to my long runs soon as they’re my favs!
It cannot be raining when it's cold. In winter running best option is to wear cross-country skiing clothes. I have done long runs in snow on frozen Baltic Sea in -25C in windy conditions and been perfectly fine in skiing clothes. The most problematic issue is with gloves. even when you wear thick gloves, fingers can get cold at some point of the run. So basically one should carry one extra pair of gloves.
Thanks for another excellent video Ben. Re the head torches, as a glasses wearer I've found that a head torch can reflect on my glasses, especially when wet. I decided to try a chest mounted torch which has a red light at the rear and it's brilliant. I run in some quite dark areas so do need it to see as well as being seen. Not sure if any other viewers experience the same as me. Keep up the great work Ben :-)
Annoyingly I did write down to mention the chest strap torches, but forgot to mention it.. as although I've never used one, people that do use then really like them! Glad you enjoyed the video Richard!
Normally bathrooms have heated floor. That is where running shoes get dry very quick. I always take insoles out and shoes are dry next morning. Some shoes, especially older once I wash in machine. My washing machine has a 30 minute sneaker program.
I'm coming into my first London winter as an Aussie and I am terrified 😅this is super helpful advice thanks Ben! I just signed up to the Vitality Big Half to motivate me to keep up the miles over winter, we'll see how successful that it
Weather does look a little frightening in the UK! In the Blue Mountains (Australia) we have been having beautiful sunny days and I have been running most mornings in glorious dry, coolish weather. Mind you the upcoming Australian summer always presents a few issues :). And a big 'thanks' for showing all of this running kit!
Some tips from me because nobody asked :D (UK based, coldest we've seen this winter is -5c so far, but I've lived in the Canadian Rockies in -30c as well) - You're probably going to get wet, EMBRACE IT! If you try and fight it you'll lose and end up having a bad time. You'll start to have a lot more fun when you realise you can stay warm & comfortable no matter how wet you get, as long as you dress right. - Even with the most expensive waterproofs you can find you will still get wet, even just from sweating, so maybe save those for a less intense activity when staying dry is more important. - AVOID COTTON (it get's cold when wet and stays cold) but try not to get caught up in the hype of Nike/Adidas etc materials. Ronhill is a great option amongst others: Asics, North Ridge, Higher State - Combine 2/3 thin layers (Jacket counts as a layer on rough days) they trap warmth efficiently and are easy to shed/re-apply through varying conditions. - Wind chill will bite you on the ass, literally. Wind will be a key factor for feeling chilly, especially if you're wet, so try and keep an eye out for light "windproof" clothing (most polyester tops have a natural windproof-ness I've found) plus the accessories Ben pointed out, covering ears is crucial for me! - 2 or 3 pairs of good socks to rotate. These will be the first thing to get wet alongside your shoes & they'll stay wet. Materials like Merino or Coolmax/Polyester blends are great for this. They should have low friction on your skin & they'll retain your body heat, similar to a surfer in a wetsuit! Like Ben said, heat will be lost via your head, hands & feet. I have been using some mid weight Bridgedale hiking socks in the absence of running socks, they're toasty but breathable & are very durable! Hope this can help some nervous runners, as long as you're dressed right you'll have a great time :) keep adventuring & stay safe out there!
@@andresgduarte thanks mate! Glad it could help someone a bit, what are your questions about shoes? It'll be rainy in Vancouver but you won't get cold spells for too long at a time. I lived on Main St & 18th, so used to enjoy running up around queen Elizabeth park, nice view from there towards the mountains over downtown & good for hill sprints 👍
Actually I use that 5 ºC threshold myself too. That's my limit to run without proper cold weather clothing, specially trousers, a buff, and a beanie. My cycling gloves are also welcoming at that temperature for sure. Where I live, Northeastern Portugal, things can easily drop to around -5 ºC during the Winter.
This was super helpful, thank you! Have been looking for a decent but not too expensive headtorch for the city, so I’ll look into the ones you’ve recommended! Greetings from rainy Berlin :)
Great video Ben, I've been looking at some s lab gear but it is very expensive so might keep an eye on it for future offers. Just joined both yours and Sarah's channels.
Thanks very much for the support Dave! Most appreciated. The S/Lab gear is quite pricy for sure. I found my wind proof jacket on Centurion Running store for £80, vs £130RRP.. so not bad. With a water proof you can usually fine a GORE-tex jacket on offer now and then.. that's what I'd look out for when the time is right for you. All the very best with your running! :-)
Love the honestly around what you use, what is over priced and what people should keep in mind. Great tips too! I think I need some of that sports wash, my trainers stink 🤣
Come to Hawaii when it’s pretty much never cooler than 20°C unless you are running at altitude, and where the shortest day is only about 11 hours. (Maybe after COVID-19 though)
Agree on the gore tex point, especially in the north. Gore tex or not, all shoes have a rather large hole in them that will let water in when you end up in a bog. Better to have shoes that drain said bog water rather than retain it.
Yes.. I've found that once water is inside a gore-tex shoe, it stays there.. but regular shoes drain and get back to being ok again quicker. Gore-tex maybe good for a walk on a rainy day etc, but have never found them to be good running shoes
Great vid Ben! I find a simply compression legging & thermal long sleeve under layer is pretty effective after the first 1-2km. I'll defiantly add you tips to my arsenal!
Hi Ben, great video. I've been following you for months now and have both your buffs which are great. Just an observation/ criticism with your filming. I don't know if you realise or it's deliberate, but you seem to cut yourself off when you're moving on to another topic and then the music overlay is quite loud. It would be better production wise to fade the music in slowly as you're above to move topic so you don't get cut off. It's quite annoying. Great content as always keep it up. 👍🏻
Like many I enjoy colder weather...but icy winds/road conditions not so much. If I run outside I'll warmup on my indoor bike for 10-15 minutes then head out loose. I "HATE" treadmill workouts but when necessary I'll try and do my normal easy runs (must have music).

I agree, Boot Buddy’s are fab. I’ve been using one for a couple of weeks (soI can’t comment in longevity) but it’s so much easier than a puddle and a washing up brush that I was using! I got mine from Sports Direct too. It was £12.99 I think. Will be buying two more for Christmas presents 👍🏻
Thanks Ben, have been running in Ron Hill tracksters during the cold weather for over 30 years....Best Buy ever ! 👍😉......I also like the long sleeve Runderwear Base layer and usually wear a gilet by proviz rather than a jacket.....👍
I hate saying this because I hate treadmills but, when the weather is too cold or too bad what workouts would you recommend on the treadmill? Or could you do a video in the future about treadmill workouts for speed, endurance, hill workouts etc.
As someone who likes the treadmill (yes really lol) I'd say just do your regular workouts and use an incline of 1% when running faster than 7 min/mile. If you get bored easily pyramid sessions are a great option because pressing buttons often makes the time go by more quickly. My favourite session is 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1 @ 3k - 10k effort with 2 min recovery after each interval. The "Even Steven Workout" is a good one too, just google it.
Hi ben, crep protect - crep cure is amazing for cleaning shoes, especially a knitted upper! They do a little kit with a brush and its amazing! They’re available in most jd sports shop, places like that and online. Love the vids pal, keep them up
I'm looking for a reasonably priced WP running jacket. How good exactly is Sarah's Montane jacket ? As for cleaning my shoes (NEVER in a washing machine or near a heat source) I have always left them to dry off, bang off any loose dirt and then use baby wipes. Yes, baby wipes. Gets the grime out of the upper, midsole and outsole and leaves them smelling a bit better !!
What would you suggest for cold weather running and by cold I mean minus 30 to minus 40 which is quite normal where I live in Canada. You didn't mention handwarmers that go inside gloves and can keep hands warm for up to 8 hours
When it's really cold, running slowly and slowly breathing out air at mouth helps me keep my head/neck warm. I have a problem with sweat getting into my ears. I put little papers in ears but it doesn't seem to help.
X Bionic - The Trick. Simply fantastic base layer. I use the long sleeve one and is good from -5oc through to 8oc outside temperature. Really rate the product and best to wait / look out for a sale. Had it for 3 years and still going strong.
What do you consider being bad in using your pink gloves?....and what would you recommend in general when buying running gloves? And also what do you call that thing at 2:37 ? :D
I don't know if anyone else is like me, but I don't tend to have a problem with cold temperatures - my body turns into a nuclear reactor after a couple of kms and I can strip down to a singlet even on the coldest of days. When it comes around to summer, that's when I start to struggle 😅
Top tip for washing your clothes. Use white vinegar instead of conditioner. It's good for the clothes and the machine as well ! Plus it's it's dead cheap.
Hey Ben, a few people in the running world I follow are talking about scaling back on the more intense, speed based training and using the "off" winter season to build an aerobic base with plenty of easy runs, tempo runs, long runs and maybe with the odd hills sessions thrown in or something. What kind of training in the colder months do you recommend?
Hey Jon! I recommend people doing what they want to do at the end of the day. Should try do plan training based on what you want to get out of running, rather than doing something just because someone else is doing it. But it's always great to see what others are planning though and for me I'll spend a lot of time doing easier base building work as well! Just think ahead 1, 2 or 3 months and see what goals you might have (not easy right now I know) then you can start to put together a plan of how you want to get there.. All the best with your winter of training Jon!!
@@BenParkes Thanks Ben! Appreciate your reply and advice. I'm mostly taking it easy at the moment, coming back from a couple of minor injuries and doing plenty of strength work and easy/tempo runs. Ideally my goals would be to work my way up the distances to a sub 1:30 half-marathon as a big goal for next year (been looking at your training plans!). At the moment though just taking it mostly really easy and itching to get back to speedier running.
As they say there is no bad weather just bad clothing - for me apart from the usual stuff - under armour base layer/moisture wicking beanie & gloves/Accubuddy reflective armbands & head torch if you find it annoying like me on your head!! Wear it around your waist 😉
Hi Ben, is it just me or do you ever had problems with the wind blowing your cap off? I run by the sea when winds can be pretty high! I often end up carrying it in my hand. Any suggestions? I don’t have as much hair as you! 😈
Ben Parkes I should make it clear that my old baseball cap isn’t one of your super high quality ones so maybe I need to order one. I like the green one! 😎🏃♂️
Running in winter for me was both good and bad experience. It was cooler so it made my running easier, bad side is that it burns up my lungs. Results are that I make my runs shorter. Prior to this pandemic, how can I run in cooler seasons?
😂😂 your a brave boy washing your dirty shoes in the bath, my Mrs would skin me alive!!! You mentioned Decathlon a few times. I've been before and went for a few items the other day, good quality stuff, loads of choice and the prices are fantastic👍
I live in Alberta and I am trying to get adjusted to winter running. Not to be crude but how do you prevent your genitals from freezing? After a run the tip is like an ice cube.
Bad weather what’s that? Here in Murcia Spain we only get about 5 days of rain a year😁! I don’t have a phone that I can pay with so I put 20euros between phone and case with some ID just in case!

Yeah, You feel like a snowman 'cause all the clothes you must wear. My advice always has been not to run below -25°C. It is a serious asthma risk if you inhale too cold air into your system.
Depends on the humidy. In the UK, I reckon about 6 degrees. I ran in minus 10 in shorts (parkrun) in Poland but humidity was less. It's also pace dependant - quality runs will keep you warm. Recovery runs bring slower so you might want to wrap up.
Maybe not waterproof shoes, but waterproof socks - now you're talking. Sealskinz are ace, get them on your Xmas list. Or just get them. You're welcome.
I really don't like to hear gore tex dies not with it I love my gore tex terrex , just been out in massive snow plus snowing run into a pothole kicking wet watery snow etc and came home with dry feet after a 10k. If you have submerged situations coming up maybe not but i went out in uk London winter and rain with these gore tex shoes and dry feet is a guarantee

But far too many adverts thanks TH-cam
I've been thinking of the Alpkit Gravitas waterproof running jacket. Welsh company with B credentials. Seeing what come up in the sales through
Hey Ben, a few people in the running world I follow are talking about scaling back on the more intense, speed based training and using the "off" winter season to build an aerobic base with plenty of easy runs, tempo runs, long runs and maybe with the odd hills sessions thrown in or something.
Nice video Ben! How old are you?
Marino wool is my default for base layers and underwear at this time of year.
Much more comfortable when you sweaty and it's chilly.
As they say there is no bad weather just bad clothing - for me apart from the usual stuff - under armour base layer/moisture wicking beanie & gloves/Accubuddy reflective armbands & head torch if you find it annoying like me on your head!! Wear it around your waist 😉
Agree about Gortex, once wet your feet stay wet
Hi mate what would you carry your water in when doing a mix terrain marathon/ultra ?. Ive got race 1st November and want to race quite quick. Thanks
I have a Salomon adv 12 set that I use for longer races. Works well for me! Good luck in your race 🙌
Hey queen hey! Just breezing by to give your page some FABlife support!
What is newspaper? Is that an app?
Would you do a review on “on running” shoes. I see lots of people buying them recently.
Trash shoe
Hi Ben, is it just me or do you ever had problems with the wind blowing your cap off? I run by the sea when winds can be pretty high! I often end up carrying it in my hand. Any suggestions? I don’t have as much hair as you! 😈
I've never had one of my hats blow off.. I just tighten it up a little and it stays on really well.
Ben Parkes I should make it clear that my old baseball cap isn’t one of your super high quality ones so maybe I need to order one. I like the green one! 😎🏃♂️
Do you use the Montane Prisms to fend off dogs and zombies, or was it from your short lived skateboard days?
Came here after slogging through my run today in the icy rain in London, time to embrace the leggings
Hi Ben, what do you recommend using to hold 4 energy gels during a marathon? I've discovered my back pocket on shorts isn't really suitable
I have a Naked Band that works really well. Or you could look for a spi belt, some of the ones they make have gel holders in. All the best!
Yes, we really like Decathlon. Good honest kit without breaking the bank!
Pls reduce plastic by finding more environmentally friendly alternate to your washing fluid.
Otherwise great stuff
If you have some suggestions then that would be great?
@@BenParkes i was afraid you where going to ask that (hehe), living in Denmark we have some local products, but I have found some similar products online you can check out :) I have noticed you are vegan + use good packages for your merch, so I’m I felt confident you would be interested in reducing plastic as well

It is not only the container that is plastic in normal washing fluid, but also within the fluid it selves.lots if micro-plastic comes out in the ocean. If you haven’t red into it yet it’s a new world of knowledge, I discovered it not to long ago but so glad I did. My clothes are just as clean.
Have a great Sunday night.
Nevermind all that...since when was there a red version of the hoodie? That is my Christmas present sorted.
Ha! It’s only been out a week Kev. Glad you like the look of it!! 😀
Watching this in the 2 weeks we call the British summer 😂😅
Rewatching this in the usual British Winter 😂😂
Come to Russia and try to run in winter time. When it's -25, -30 °C 😁
Yeah, You feel like a snowman 'cause all the clothes you must wear. My advice always has been not to run below -25°C. It is a serious asthma risk if you inhale too cold air into your system.
@@goommenter when I served in the army, noone gave a damn about it😁😁 the order was - move! You scumbags! Keep running
@@spideysammy9095 try Canada 😂
@@landyncb8751 help me to get to Canada and I'll do it with pleasure)))) or come to Russia. My house is your house😌
Hell yeah. I would love to do that. Something on the bucket list right!?
whats the minimum temperature for wearing shorts? I want to wear them as long as i can because i dont really like leggings
Depends on the humidy. In the UK, I reckon about 6 degrees. I ran in minus 10 in shorts (parkrun) in Poland but humidity was less. It's also pace dependant - quality runs will keep you warm. Recovery runs bring slower so you might want to wrap up.
Neck wraps sold out 😭😭😭
Will be back in stock very soon!
Maybe not waterproof shoes, but waterproof socks - now you're talking. Sealskinz are ace, get them on your Xmas list. Or just get them. You're welcome.
Who knew that washing running shoes was a thing... 🤷
LOL! As a Londoner what do you know about winter?)))
#anotherqualityvid
Running in the rain is fine but... running in the rain with glasses sucks !!!!
You really need to spend 20 bucks on a boot dryer.
First
Yup
Nice job, I was 2 seconds behind
have to disagree i got a terrex trail running goretex and got caught in a bad rain / the only thing that was dry by the end of it was my feet
