  • Here I put the selvans directly up against the MOD knife, the full video of this weekend camp is available to my members, fire , axe and food plus extra bloopers.
    l get asked about my clothing sometimes, i'm wearing a bison bushcraft Ykon vest over a denim cheque swamdri shirt which has been modified with shorter collars and G1000 shoulder pads.

    Alot have tried and alot have failed, as it takes time to understand a Wilky. The real ones or still not major money and a custom leather sheath is around a £100 made. I have and the past dug out bricks and stones out of walls with mine, when having to look through a wall and it withstands nearly everything you can throw at it. I have filled the rivet holes with two pack resin which makes it a lot more comfortable to handle. In 35 plus years of use, still holds an edge and overall still as solid as the day it was made, but Army tested you can expect no more. But one of those like Marmite, you like it or hate it, but they do grow on you.

    Rob , a really great comparison video. Just one tale to tell your viewers about the MOD knife. As you said, the handle on the wooden handled version is very "proud" of the metal bit of the handle/tang. This, I'm told, was to prevent bare skin hands, touching the metal in Artic conditions, and sticking to the metal. Would suggest that anyone who owns one files/sands the butt end down to the metal as I've seen two wooden handles cleanly split when using the butt to drive in a tent peg,or similar . Not a big problem ,with tape and super glue, to resolve , but prevention is always better than cure ! Hope you had a good Christmas and wishing you the best for Hogmany!

    I'm a new one on your channel, I'm from Italy. Very good and honest review! Terävä Skrama teaches! For that money I rather like a custom knife built of a high carbon steel, much more indicated for big knifes in my opinion. I don't like so much ER N690 steel, honestly overpriced in 2023.

  • @sharamkh
    @sharamkh ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Nice side by side comparison, Rob! In the Selvans price range, I would consider Fällkniven A1X, TRC Apocalypse or Cold Steel Recon Scout better options (I have all three). Heck, for that kind of money you can get a custom made to your liking.

    • @RobEvansWoodsman

      @@RobEvansWoodsmanYeah, they are great knives. Difficult to see the appeal of the Selvans as a user. And I agree with your statement that the kukri is a great hard use option. I recently got my first kukri and have been liking it a lot. It sure has a lot of chopping power 😁

    • @HankSielski
      @HankSielski ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So if you could only choose one of these medium sized survival type knives (A1X, TRC, CS, or MOD) to take on a trip where your life may be on the line, which would it be?

    • @sharamkh
      @sharamkh ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HankSielski I’ll play the hypothetical game 😁 I don’t have the MOD, so I’ll eliminate that. Next I will eliminate the Recon Scout. It has a potential weakness in the transition to the tang. The rubber handle is warm to hold, but it will deteriorate faster than than plastic of the A1X and the Micarta of the Apocalypse. You can not baton the rubber. Also, the top finger guard can be in the way when batoning or doing finer work when you want your hand closer to the edge. The difficult choice is between the A1X and the Apocalypse. I think I would choose the A1X. The blade is thicker. It batons like a champ with a thicker spine, convex grind and lower blade height. The CoS steel is a little easier to maintain than the Elmax in Apocalypse. Both are stainless and virtually maintenance free. The A1X sheath has a locking mechanism, so close to impossible for the knife to accidentally come out of the sheath. There is also less chance for the A1X to freeze stuck in the sheath, because there is more wiggle room in the plastic sheath than in the Apocalypse kydex sheath. The A1X is also a more compact overall package to carry. A hypothetical weakness of the Apocalypse is the tang. The tang of the Apocalypse is skeletonized, whereas the tang of the A1X is solid. I do believe the tang of the Apocalypse is more than strong enough in most realistic situations, but I am imagining extreme scenarios here. Both of the knives have exposed tang at the pommel and the tang is protruding a little all the way around the handle scales. This allows you to hit the pommel and top and bottom of the handle without hitting and potentially damaging the scales. One last thing to consider is that the handle scales of the A1X is ease to take off and put on, making replacement easy. The micarta handle scales of the Apocalypse is permanently fastened with flared tubes. If you care about looks, the Apocalypse is definitely the better looking knife. With all that said, both are amazing knives when used to their strengths, and both have a permanent place in my collection. You can’t go wrong with either.
