Bad management hurt the team well into the '80s. In his book, Phil Esposito claims that Gulf Western (who owned the team in the '70s and '80s) had no real interest in competing and thwarted deals he could have made for Wayne Gretzky and others who could have helped them contend. They also made a ton of terrible trades (Middleton for Hodge, Ridley and Miller for Carpenter, who was then stupidly flipped for Marcel Dionne, etc.).
The rangers curse lasted 53 seasons. However since 1967 at least one of the three teams representing the New York metro area has been in the playoffs. This streak surpassed the length of the team’s cup drought this past summer, and we are well overdue for situation when all three of the New York area hockey teams will miss the playoffs in a single season. That has not happened since 1966.
Just imagine what the Canadian NHL franchises would have looked like if that 50-mile territorial rights rule had continued: - The Leafs still may have missed out Gretzky (Brantford ON is a bit too far from Toronto) but would have remained a perennial powerhouse and regular Cup winner - Mario Lemieux would have played for the Habs, as would have Roberto Luongo and and Martin Brodeur - Patrick Roy would have played for the Nordiques - Jonathan Toews would have played for the Jets - Joe Sakic and Paul Kariya would have played for the Canucks - A 25 year Canadian Cupless run would have been unthinkable
The 1940’s NHL is very interesting seeing as teams are much, much different considering that WW2 was going on. Really looking forward to seeing some analysis on the NHL in 1950s seeing as it’s probably my favourite time period in the NHL.
Since the Senators Stanley Cup drought only counts as 31 years because they had the small disadvantage of not playing for 60 years, the Rangers have the longest drought in NHL history at 54 years, the way things are going in Buffalo and Vancouver, and knowing the history of the St. Louis Blues, the Rangers won't keep that record for much longer
Here are the season's all-star teams: 1st Team: C Milt Schmidt (Bruins) LW Toe Blake (Canadiens) RW Bryan Hextall (Rangers) D Dit Clapper (Bruins) D Ebbie Goodfellow (Red Wings) G Dave Kerr (Rangers) Coach: Paul Thompson (Black Hawks) 2nd Team: C Neil Colville (Rangers) LW Woody Dumart (Bruins) RW Bobby Bauer (Bruins) D Art Coulter (Rangers) D Earl Seibert (Black Hawks) G Frank Brimsek (Bruins) Coach: Frank Boucher (Rangers)
There had to be something between the Americans and the Rangers. The Americans were first in NY. I had read that there was an agreement between MSG and the Americans that another team would not come in. MSG evidently broke it. Then the Rangers early success on the ice took all of the thunder from the Americans.
What would NHL expansion have looked like if the Americans moved to a arena in Brooklyn instead of suspending operations and what if the Maroons moved to Philadelphia?
Richie Martínez well, I don’t think at this time Philly can support a team. So you probably just have the Philly Maroons folding a little later on. Just my opinion though
Rangers. Had the gag line and bruins...flyers...montr...Chicago all were as good and they won...but nyr didn't. 1974 vs flyers game 7...nyr played scared....wow. rod Gilbert was afraid schuktz would smack him. ..1940 rangers noxfighters. Then isles wonx4 cups ..hate this team forever.
Devils 3 cups . Isles 4. Nyr 1. Messier the gay piece crap. .that got zubov traded. Messier elbows. .awful cheap shot artist. Too bad dornhoffer wasn't playing vs him and takexstick and make jomxeat it
With territorial rights highly favouring 3 of the 6 teams no wonder it took so long until the NHL had a draft compared to the NFL who implemented the draft in 1936 and NBA who had a draft since their first season
no. I just think if a region is producing talent, then they should get first shot at it. It makes sense and would encourage youth hockey. I think its sad that Nashville has some of the best talent on their team despite the Nashville area producing exactly ZERO NHL players. (And dont blame it on climate. St Louis has a similar climate and has produced tons of NHL players.) And players like to play for their hometowns (ask John Tavares).
smithryansmith how long have the blues and professional hockey in general for St Louis existed as opposed to Nashville? It’s a growing market and as it grows the sport will grow down there.
Nashville for over twenty years so its not "new'. I still don't see what wrong with giving locals the chance to play for their home tams while they are young rather than the random mercenary style we have now. This would motivate places like Nashville to actually develop talent rather than just buy it. Still don't get why anyone would be opposed to having local talent play for local teams.
smithryansmith that’s just not how sports should work. That gives teams unfair Advantages. It’d just go back to canadian teams winning every stanley cup. It’s about building a team from the ground up, not just claiming all the best players because your team has an area where lots of good players are created

This one DID last a lifetime
Trey Rich I am now sad
Boston Bruin’s Bobby Bauer bagged back to back Bings
Freddy Dunning-Kruger lmao it's the NHL's woodchuck joke
*Byngs
Can you please do a video about the NHL players who served in WW2?
These videos are just going to get better and better. Also, you are silly and everybody loves it.
The effort you put into your videos is so impressive.

Chicago isn't within 50 miles of Canada - Michigan is in the way. Probably why as you said the Hawks also had a bad time during the Original 6 era.
Also the James E. Norris turning the Hawks into a Wings B team and basically crippling the team

Boston Bruin’s Bobby Bauer thing was way too funny.
From all those teams on the board the Leafs are at 52 years and counting wooow wtf

As of the end of the 2020-21 season the Leafs have gone 54 years/seasons without winning the Cup.
This was New York's final time of beating a Canadian team until 1982 when The New York Islanders sweep The Vancouver Canucks in 4 games.
Can't wait to see jerseys 20-1

1940 lives on ....and on....and on.... tonight grown adults wearing ranger jerseys....wow....man love huh. ....
Whose gone longer without a cup? Isles won cups when players still worked part time jobs and smoked darts in the back. 🥔 head
What happened to 1939?
Shoutout to My great uncle Dave Kerr!
Love this series
Art Ross trying to arm the players with a scalpel disguised as a hockey stick in the era before helmets.....how could this possibly go wrong?
All i know when u do the 1984 one its going to be oppening day off school
You should rank all the AHL jerseys

The Atlanta Falcons of the NFL. In existence since 1966 (52 years) ....two Super Bowl appearances and zero wins.
Chris Coulter oh god don’t remind me :(

Are the circuses in Madison Square Garden still a thing today?
I think they just call it the "New York Knicks" now
Sidwyth this guy lmao
Who gave you that shiner?
That's ok. Rangers fans have a few for the islanders fans...
1983, last cup you'll ever see
DP FIFTEEN DP FIFTEEN
Ryan Branigan JOHN TA-VA-RES! Will be the new chant
jasonfire34 haha i like it
1994, you won’t win a single more. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
Ryan Branigan one cup since ww2

Oh how I miss that 1940 chant. Hopefully we can keep chanting 1994 for the next several decades.
If only this had gone in: th-cam.com/video/enZRLXV_8P8/w-d-xo.html
The 1940 chant might have lived on.

The terrirtorial rights was BS. How many cups would've the Leafs or Habs win if it wasn't a thing. They prob wouldn't even have 10 each
With territorial rights highly favouring 3 of the 6 teams no wonder it took so long until the NHL had a draft compared to the NFL who implemented the draft in 1936 and NBA who had a draft since their first season
☺
Bettman cursed the rangers again..
And then as soon as he took over they won so problem solved
I wish they would reinstitute the 50 mile rule. Teams like Nashville and Florida would truly represent their fan base and thereby be talent shy.
smithryansmith spot the Canadian hockey purist
