Installing a Sailing Rig onto my Cedar Strip Canoe. Solway Dory Expedition 25 Lug Sail.

  • In this video, I will be installing a sailing rig to my cedar strip canoe.
Canoe sailing gives the paddler an option to extend range on a canoe trip by harnessing the power of the wind to assist with the effort of paddling and increase speed if the conditions are right.
I have chosen to install the Expedition 25 Lugsail from the British sailing canoe manufacturer Solway Dory. This is a well designed and superbly well made sail rig, made by people who understand about sailing - genuine sail-cloth, cut and sewn beautifully and incorporating tell-tails, a mast and spars which hold the sail in shape using adjustable lines to keep the sail in shape, an Ash leeboard to help with stability and to keep the canoe from being pushed sideways by the force of the wind - a proper sailing set-up. As part of the install, I also make up a bracket for the leeboard that will sit over the side of my canoe, clearing the gunwales and allowing the board to pivot up and out of the water for paddling or for shallow water.
I have not sailed for many years, but used to enjoy it as a child, so I am very excited to be able to use my trusty canoe as a sailing vessel - both for the shear fun of it, but also to assist with long hours of paddling on extended canoe trips.
I hope you enjoy the video.
    Thanks for watching!

Ahoy, is there anything more satisfying than the sound of crisp new sails?! I’ve been sailing all of my 63 years, and now I’m searching for a suitable kayak rig to take along while I’m out camping with my travel trailer (caravan). Your handcrafted canoe is even more enviable Simon! Fair winds and following seas.... ⛵️

That was pretty amazing. One thing I thought of - on the leeboard bracket, you might want to find some machine bolts that are a bit longer - then afix a cap nut to them. Alternatively, I've seen a low profile version called a connecting bolt that might be perfect (vs the protruding acorn nut variety). Just an idea.

So lovely to see this. You'll love it! We've got a FyneBoatKits MillCreek 16.5 with the sail kit and it's great fun. With two in the kayak it balances well but I've found that I needed to move my seat and the lee board in order to balance it when sailing solo. I did have a rather "interesting" trip once where my seat was too far back and it would only go downwind at quite a rate. If it's any encouragement, I've never capsized, but then maybe I'm a bit chicken with the sheet. I've never cleated it, so I can let go of the "bravery string" anytime I get nervous. Happy Sailing!

Amazing video! Have you taken it out for a "test capsize" just so you can have a feel for how it might go? Years ago, during sailing lessons, the instructors had us deliberately capsize our small sailboats, then right them. I learned a lot from those drills, and it made me much more confident out on open water. Thanks for the great videos!

Lots of good canoe companies out there, if you are in the UK, Silverbirch, Venture, Hou to name a few. Wenonah and Old town in the US or Swift for really nice light boats. Second hand is always an option, but my advise is buy the best you can afford, cheap boats are heavy and flex all over the place 👍

Well, I instantly stopped watching what I was watching on TH-cam when I saw your video pop up. I nearly pi- -ed my pants when I saw you putting a sail on your canoe. Living on the bay of southeastern Texas we get a lot of wind, perfect for sailing. I think about it everyday. And every time I see you out on those windy broads I’m thinking, “Simon would really find a sail a benefit”. Poor ol’ Andy won’t know how to cope, heh, heh... Don’t tell him, let it be a surprise, heh, heh... He’ll disappear behind you, wondering, “Has he left me? Where’d he go”? Heh, heh, heh... You’re gonna have so much fun. When you decide you want a bit more speed, you may even want outriggers, heh, heh... You may even be considering a rowing/sailing dinghy like Roger Barnes. Look him up on TH-cam. He’s British and a sailor. Texas

Without it you just drift away and with leeboard the wind has the axle around which could capsize you 🙂 Leeboard alows you to go upwind, nothing else.

@@peterlindley3756 Hello Peter and thanks for the reply. No, as it turns out, I have experimented with several minor changes to the way the wick emerges and there is no restriction. It is actually the way that the wick material degrades after about 20mins to half an hour of burn time and it seems to 'grow' three carbon covered lumps at the top which cause the flame to reduce to a rather sad little glow! I have trimmed, shortened, extended etc etc. to no avail. I have some new wick material to try it with and I have even made a whole new duplicate top from another chain ring bolt to screw in. I have not had time to sit and play with it just yet...(I teach for a living and 'Teacher Assessment' is pretty full on right now!). Thanks again.

Hi Simon - I am fascinated just watching work so meticulously…… other bits edited out! I have looked on TH-cam for other sailing canoe videos and there doesn’t look to be much under 8 years old! I think you will need a rudder though … or maybe another arm ….

I’m sure you will get to it, but if you shape that leeboard bracket to match the yoke’s curves it will be very yachty.

The stair step gradually increasing towards making a snipe? Or something close to a snipe. You will always be jiggling with the riggings to maximize your speeds! Of course as well as the sails. Thanks

You’re going to have to rig something for the camera to remain steady and continue to film that first capsize!! I want to see the floundering as well as the efficiency of the tubes! Haha! ❤️ for your vids!

First few voyages would have plenty of air bags strapped in to displace water if it does go over.it will be easier to handle and won't go to the bottom. And some floating rope so you can keep with you if the worse happens. Trust me I know ~ I was known as the submariner in my kayak club 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Will you be recreating Robert Loius Stevenson's 'An Inland Voyage' be venturing up the rivers of Belgium and Northern France by sailing canoe? Got a round pop-up sail last year but still waiting for the current ghastliness to pass for a chance to use it...

Huh, it's like a little Optimist sail. Interested in how much you can reduce your leeway (sideways drift).

The word for Holy Spirit in hebrew Ruah. In Greek Phuma. Both mean wind. Not a person. So u want to feel the wind in ur face.

Another great and interesting video, and a job well done, hope it brings you many a happy hour on the water, Im afraid Im not as confident as you are with a sail on a canoe I had enough dunkings from the old Mirrors, Fireballs and 505's to last me a lifetime and then some, hahahahaha, but im looking forward to seeing your future videos with canoe sailing.

Great video and superb instruction for converting a canoe. One question: what dimension does that leeboard have?

  • @rmellersh
    @rmellersh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Very nice but may I humbly suggest a short loop of cord from the black/orange lee board clamping nut to the hull - just in case. Oh and a silver coin at the base of the mast (if you can find one in this century!)

Simon you may know Ray Goodwin already but I found this video quite interesting. Using a canoe paddle to both steer and act as a leeboard. Skip to 4:40 when he gets on the water. th-cam.com/video/HoY4V2EHQeg/w-d-xo.html

    Hi Simon,
Have you thought about painting, please turn over, on the bottom of the canoe? Very envious and a nice job which I hope you enjoy to the full.
