Hey Laurie ... my dog picked up the nose to hand "bump" target very reliably. Now I want to sustain that hand contact, not transfer it to another object. She doesn't seem to understand I'm looking for longer contact
My dog caught on to targeting with her nose within minutes. I then taught her to target with her paw also. My problem is, she gets so amped up when targeting, she has been quite careless and nipped my hand twice. I know my girl and I know the wasn't being aggressive, she was just too excited and careless. How can I calm her down or keep her calm during training sessions. She LOVES training and I love doing new things with her to give her some mental stimulation. She just gets TOO stimulated.
Check out kikopup's videos on capturing calmness. There is also something called the Relaxation Protocol that I found the other day on google. Doing sessions without a clicker and only a calm marker can help a lot. It helped me and mine. :)
The cue for hand touch is the presentation of my hand. When I take my hand out of the picture and the target is something inanimate (something that won't present itself), I need to give Levi the cue to touch it.
my puppy caught on quick to the touch, but now he thinks that licking is what I want. I tried only rewarding for nose touches, but he licks everytime! how can I phase out the lick and get more of a nose bump from him?

Hi,
Wondering here, the cue touch was not being used for the hand touch, although the dog knew to touch the hand did he really understand the cue ?

Keep up the good work! My guess is that the lick will fade out on it's own.
