Obviously, the primary reason I watch your videos is trains, which are always spot on; however, I really want to express my appreciation and gratitude for your wonderful tribute to President Carter. I'm one of the folks who voted for him twice (yes, I'm that old); and your shots of the caisson was not only very moving for me, but also it was the best shot I've seen all day. Thank you again for your respect and thoughtfulness on this solemn day.
Carter really was the last of the great presidents of the people.. His work after the presidency showed how much he cared for his fellow human beings and leaves a legacy that sadly will be difficult to fill. Great to see a moment of the funeral procession along with so many great train videos in the snow.
He gave money to Indonesia to massacre people in East Timor and gave his stamp of approval for the South Korean military to massacre protesting students at Gwangju.
BTW, he signed his official documents "Jimmy Carter," not James Earl. And as I recall from those ancient times, he never took offense at being called "Mr. Peanut." ...though when a fan in a Planters Peanut costume danced out onto Pennsylvania Avenue as he and Rosalynn walked to the White House, alert Secret Service agents hustled the overenthused fan away.
It is interesting how transit operations handle snowy weather. Columbus (Central Ohio Transit Authority) did not collect fares all day on Monday with all the routes operating.
@@Thom-TRA Yes. Ohio has three levels of Snow Emergencies. Level 1 being the lowest. If the county declares a Level 2 or 3 COTA suspends all fare.. Monday was a Level 2.

I visited President Carter when he was still in Atlanta. MARTA did a great job coordinating easy transit access to the Carter Center for the public to pay their respects. Also ran 24 hour service for it too, quite surprised by that.

Thom, WMATA, and even the commuter rail, know that it snows in DC every year, pretty much, and you'd figure they'd have certain protocols as to "how much is too much" snow forcing reduced service, and publicize those, right? I'm thinking of the NYC subways "snow day plan" of running the trains underground only. It's rarely ever implemented but anyone who pays attention knows it exists.
They do. For example, WMATA has a certain number of inches before they stop running service outside. For the commuter rails it had a lot to do with the fact that the federal workforce was already staying home on an account of January 6.
I was going to do a bit of railfanning before heading into work yesterday; but after getting hit by a good couple of blasts of wind I decided to just head straight to work. L'ENFANT is one of my favorite spots to watch and photograph trains from as it's convenient and relatively close to work, but I try to leave by 1 pm on weekdays because of the evening commuter crowd.
That big snow storm just missed us here in NYC. Though when I was younger, I used to love going by the LIRR in a snow storm and watch the trains go by in the snow. Was always a pretty site and cool seeing some of those trains plow right through the snow.
I always like you filming these unique service disruptions on the Metro. I always figured they gotta be pretty common due to how much goes on in D.C. that requires high security.
Awesome coverage of the rails... and of President Carters Funeral... you have the youth and energy to run through the snow in the winter weather to bring us amazing shots. Happy New Year, Thom!! I like how Arlington Cemetery station on the Metro is a perfect place for winter transit photographs. You can freeze frame any of your clips from Arlington Cemetery, and it's a perfect photo. I also appreciate you filming the funeral procession for President Jimmy Carter. I guess being in the DC Area is kind of the right time, right place for you. You wouldn't see that anywhere else unless it's a huge celebrity. It does make you a witness to history seeing something like that. There has been three state funerals for presidents in the past twenty years, including President Carter, recently, so i guess it's a way of being fortunate to see something like that, but I digress. Trains and snow are very magical. At least caught your Amtrak train running through the snow. But that metro train coming into Arlington Cemetery, all snow covered, that is pretty special! I look forward to what you got coming up in the year!!
Many people ignore that announcement to move to the center of the car and just stand there right in the front door. The problem with that is that is blocks the area on the door. It should be kept clear to so people can walk in and out of the train. Only stand there when you reach your stop

If you can't shovel the snow or if it doesn't stick on the street it's not a snowfall.... So I think your heaviest snow claim is misleading..... And I stick by not recalling any snow in 2022.
this snow storm has been magical in St Louis. Unfortunately many of our bus routes aren't running and the blue line of the metrolink is only running to forest park
In the St. Louis area, we got around 5-7 inches of snow/sleet/ice mix from Saturday night into Monday ❄. This past Saturday, I worked my usual train then continued out of service running back and forth between on the Metrolink system to help keep the tracks and overhead wires from ice building up and freezing over. Icy lines and electric trains do not mix lol. Any recommendations for viewing Amtrak, CSX, NS, etc in the DMV? I’ve got a budding railfan and we’ve spent quite a bit of time at Alexandria station, but I’m looking to change things up. Thanks!
I had ambitions to get out and see the snow-covered sites. But after about 5 minutes walking around, I decided to climb under a blanket, have some soup, and watch a movie. Thanks for going out and getting this footage. I was just over by the Cathedral for a job & saw the place had some really tall fencing around it. I was wondering, but then you mentioned President Carter's funeral. It all makes sense, now. Several years ago, when we had a snow and I had to go to work, I did film this bit of it coming down at the back of the Smithsonian Castle: th-cam.com/video/uCwhEGV1DOU/w-d-xo.html Actually, somewhere I think I have footage of a train from the other side of that bridge, also in the snow. Though I think it might be a VRE.
The less snow a place gets the more likely things are to get cancelled. Some European countries with little snow don’t run trains either when it does snow.
Snow is so nice, but not in case when it makes the public transport collapsed. Saint-Petersburg in Russia also have had a snowstorm in 4 January. But in Moscow we have a mix rain and snow, very poor situation. I think metro system in Washington D.C. did the best job with snowfighting, but why the bus network canceled so many routes? Are there problem with special anti-snow machines for roads? Whats happend with passenger commuter and long-distance trains, are there problems with lack of anti-snow equipment in railroad companies, too? In Russia when we have snowstorms, anti-snow machines start to work 24/7 and roads with public transport routes are a higher priority than roads without public transport. We have no plan for cancelling routes, everything goes on line, and delays usually happen just as fact. Such system becomes more unpredictable in terms of travel time and intervals for passengers, and it is also accompanied by overtime for public transport staff, but the route coverage is maintained as much as possible.
As a Canadian from Toronto who is in DC this week for the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting conference, the way the District of Columbia handles snow is a disgrace. Climbing over mountains of snow to cross the street and board buses. Slipping and sliding on uncleared, icy sidewalks. Snow filled bike lanes. US Capitol Police fencing off the sidewalk ramps and leaving piles of snow blocking the only ways you can walk. The United States of America is truly a third world country!
Thank you for President Carter's nice tribute even though you were even born yet when he was President of the United States of America.

Is that still open? Someone told me it had closed
DOGS R AWESOME
Especially mine :)
The 10th anniversary is already over, after less than a month. :(
Yeahh
I was hoping that the 7000 series would say “skipping the next stop,” as they did that at Mt. Vernon Square for NATO, but they announced the name as if we are stopping.
I was too. Probably just a fluke on my train.
Wait, they did?! I never heard a 7000-Series Train say that before! Hopefully someone happens to have the footage so I can see it for my self, that would be really cool!
Are the busses being driven by Cylons from Battlestar Galactica?
No the cylons are on strike
Any recommendations for viewing Amtrak, CSX, NS, etc in the DMV? I’ve got a budding railfan and we’ve spent quite a bit of time at Alexandria station, but I’m looking to change things up. Thanks!
Long Bridge Park, NoMa station, L’Enfant Plaza, East Potomac Park, the Anacostia River bridges, those are all some of my favorite spots!

I’m not even riding the metro because of the snow
If you get the chance you should, the views are pretty!
8 inch wasn't really a "heavy" snow dump.....were you here in January 2016....that was a "heavy" snow 36 inches😊
We’re getting more this weekend
I had ambitions to get out and see the snow-covered sites. But after about 5 minutes walking around, I decided to climb under a blanket, have some soup, and watch a movie. Thanks for going out and getting this footage.
I was just over by the Cathedral for a job & saw the place had some really tall fencing around it. I was wondering, but then you mentioned President Carter's funeral. It all makes sense, now.
Several years ago, when we had a snow and I had to go to work, I did film this bit of it coming down at the back of the Smithsonian Castle: th-cam.com/video/uCwhEGV1DOU/w-d-xo.html
Actually, somewhere I think I have footage of a train from the other side of that bridge, also in the snow. Though I think it might be a VRE.
I couldn’t wait to go back inside!
why dose snow close america no other country dose.
Snow plows prioritize certain streets and a lot of buses here use minor side streets. That and most offices were closed.
I thank president Carter for opposing president Park who was becoming an extreme dictator. RIP.
It’s pretty bad
The ice sickles on the lamps was cool.
