For those looking at this video in the future. The 5950x doesn't have a gpu, you'd need a cpu with a "G " at the end for the onboard hdmi to work. Its the platform, not the mobo. All 7XXX amd cpus have a gpu onboard.
@@MostlyDrew yes, with any dedicated GPU. You just need a display output for setup. I guess you can remove the GPU after, if your vm's are controlled through the network.
I was about to start typing. If you don't know hardware, none of the regular Ryzen CPUs have an iGPU, so your HDMI port won't work. Only the "G" variants do. Dunno about EPYC though.
Right, what was missing is to add a GPU heheheheh ... well, that wouldn't happen on a real server... this is a pc that is not redundant, but cheap... :D works fine if failover is enabled and you have 3 of the same to run VMs if one fails.
The 5950X does not have an iGPU, therefore the HDMI Port does not work - the VGA Port on the other hand is powerd by the onboard ASpeed VGA Controller and is tied in with the IPMI Controller.
I recently found out that on my old server motherboard, it also works on VGA without Dedicated GPU. I was furious why i didn't have any output, after i borrowed older GPU i realised that i can try that VGA and it worked.
Indeed this is how it works on my Asrock Rack X470D4U IPMI. For anyone who does not want an APU and/or discrete GPU on consumer motherboards, you can get an inexpensive ZOTAC GT710 (PCIe 1x) and just stick in one of your unused 1x slots for VGA output. This is what I did in my second server running a consumer board with a 5950x.
For anyone new to this, this channel and awesome opensource channel are the holy grail of self hosted how to's. I say this with experience watching and following them for over 3-4 years.
I have some old Dell servers I got for pretty cheap off ebay as my Proxmox server, so yeah, repurposing old enterprise equipment can be a great way to use proxmox and keep stuff out of the landfill!
You experienced one of my biggest problems encountered when building my Proxmox server. The Ryzen CPU's don't support integrated graphics UNLESS it is a G-series CPU like 4600G, 5600G, 5700G. So for me when trying to do the GPU passthrough to my Plex server is impossible as I didn't get a G-Series😥. I see why you went with the Ryzen 9 for high core/thread count, but it does not look like the Ryzen 9's have any G-series available. As of March this year the highest core/thread count you can get in a Ryzen (at least by the search I did) is the Ryzen 7 G-Series which has 8/16. Please no one bash me for this comment placed on a well and knowledgable TH-camr's video, but I did so for the novice users like myself that may come across this video.
I actually debated on getting a G series Ryzen CPU as well but ultimately ended up with a 5900x because of the higher thread count but also because the 5000 G series models do not have AV1 hardware encode/decode. I bought an Intel A380 because I use video hardware acceleration for Plex.
Came here to say this, fairly obvious thing. Ryzen up to the 5000 series does not have a iGPU only in the G series thought that was obvious. The 7000 series has a small GPU integrated into the I/O-die, which means all cpus have basic output. But the GPU is only for office or debugging usecases here, it is not as powerful as the real iGPUs that are with the CPU cores on CPUs that end in G.
I'm a software developer at a cloud company which uses hypervisor technology like this. We (SDE) don't really get to see the things that happen in data centers. This really got me interested.
I really appreciate sir, for the great lecture series, since I decided to do a homelab, I've got a Dell 620 don't know what to start first, but after I going through the proxmox lecture, I feel much motivation and learn more about the IT. I will keep watching and subscribe to learn about overall linux lecture as well!
He showed how to add the no subscription, he should have showed this too. Also wouldn't have minded how to enable darkmode that he is using. Could also mention the helper scripts github to help setting up the box some and some containers that weren't touched in this video. Note: darkmode is in the top right drop down at "node name @pam" then click choose theme then select darkmode.
HDMI port is for ryzen with G and PRO parts like 5750G PRO and 5600G 5950x dosen't have GPU support only the G SKUs and the PRO ones you can boot thanks to ASPEED IPMI in your motherboard which has GPU VGA support
oof at least someone called this out. got to this point in the video and was pretty disappointed in this obvious tech detail being missed. Also looks like the ram is wrong unless the 5950x happens to not have 1800mhz infinity clock. Oh well I'm just here for the proxmox...
In the "Create VM", around 16:15, you make the leap that "because we're just using SSD... check the discard box". What's the discard box result in, and why does the media type matter? You checked the "Qemu agent" without mentioning why. This is a beginner's tutorial, sorry for the beginner's questions.
Another tip regarding graphics and proxmox (or Linux in general): NVIDA GPU's aren't well supported by the kernel. There are work arounds, but, if using a higher end CPU w/o onboard graphics, a cheap, dedicated AMD gpu can be purchased on ebay for around $15. Easy solution that doesn't add much cost; you can remove it after installation, or keep it installed if space isn't an issue!
Hey, the VGA port has its own dedicated graphics chip (as all server motherboards i have encountered). But the HDMI port is dedicated for AMD CPUs with integrated graphics. It is also stated (not very clearly) on ASRock's product page. ASPEED AST2500: 1 DB15, 1 (15-pin) header AMD Ryzen™ Processors with Radeon™ Graphics: 1 HDMI

great video but im a little stuck. When you enter the IP address is this a network you have setup or just a random Ip address you chose to use? When I chose a Ip outside on my router range I cant access the web gui.
Love this channel. There are many video's about running ones firewall as a VM on proxmox. The one I use at home is Sophos XG which doesn't support 2.5Gb Ethernet, so running it in a VM works and allows me to use the remaining resources for other things (XG home use licensing). There are many vids/tuts on running ones firewall as a VM and their config is suitable to a lab environment. None of them seem to address the proxmox config necessary to connect to the internet for day to day use. I'd love to see that.

Hi! I'm new to Proxmox, thanks for video After instalation of your node, you proceed to create a VM, but how did those storage appeared in your node? There was no storage at all, and now appears localnetwork, local and local-zfs storage
Hi Jay and thanks for this PVE course! I cannot find any comments on your decision to use RAID1 for the OS; why did you opt to protect the OS via RAID rather than just covering it via the backup program, which you discuss later in the Proxmox BU server video? RAID1 cost you another NVME 500GB drive ... how do you justify the trade-off in that decision?
Great video!! As a suggestion for a future video I would love to learn more about Proxmox networking and VLANs. I would also like to dive deeper on the fastest way for VMs to talk to each other. Does the traffic all have to flow through a switch or can VMs be connected virtually in Proxmox via a bridge and what is the best practice for that.
This is some what related to your question, but I always like to use a intel NIC with SR_IOV support in my servers. Instead of using a bridge adapter you can split the one network card into multiple virtual network cards that you then can pass directly to the virtual machines. It's not necessary but its a nice feature. Here is a video explaining. th-cam.com/video/ltxzUUn1Mg8/w-d-xo.html

I found you channel and videos recently, while building a sever 'lab' for fun and learning both more about the server world/raid configs and linux. been a long in IT for a long time. mostly windows server admin environment and early days as a pc builder and worked help desk as well, moved up into system admin roles over the years, mostly windows, a very little bit linux side.
As someone with a cloud background I was like "god this is gonna take forever for me to learn this new thing" but proxmox seems extremely similar to any other CSP interface? So as someone that knows GCP, what really are the biggest *software* differences between GCP and Proxmox, aside from the obvious IaaS/CapEx/OpEx etc. things?
Regarding the HDMI port on this Mainboard for the Ryzen CPU: I think somewhat all Ryzen since the 1x00 ones have that but there are only a few CPUs that have the IGPU on it! I think these are the G models. You chose a Ryzen 9 5950X which is one that has no IGPU on it. If the IPMI of the Motherboard has some low level graphics on an extra VGA which many "normal" server boards have.
regarding the PSU: there are power supplies that follow that 3-screw in a triangle form factor, but are hard to come by. There are rackmounted chassis' with regular ATX PSU brackets if you look for it in the future :) The PSU mounting is one of the deciding factors for me when shopping for a rackmount chassis.
Some processors have integrated video in them and others do not so if a processor does not have integrated video then the outputs for the display on the motherboard will be disabled by the processor. An example of such a processor would be the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
Does Proxmox use a built-in smtp server setting? You need to type in an email address during the setup but I wonder how Proxmox can use it if we don't fill in an smtp server somewhere.
Question, do i need to be connected to LAN to access from my client machine? I am able to access the ip when connected by ethernet bit not when my client (macbook) is connected via wifi
The HDMI port does work, but only if you have integrated graphics in your CPU. I've been looking into this board, and I found that caveat in the owners manual. The DB15 (VGA) port is powered by the integrated motherboard GPU
Curious what power usage you get. I just built a server with a Rosewill RSV-L4000U, Ryzen 7900, Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX, 2- TEAMGROUP Elite Plus DDR5 64GB (2x32GB) 4800MHz PC5-38400 CL40 Unbuffered Non-ECC , Intel OPTANE SSD P1600X Series 118GB M.2, EVGA SuperNOVA 450 GM, 80 Plus Gold 450W, Fully Modular, ECO Mode with DBB Fan. ARCTIC P12 PWM PST (5 Pack) - 120 mm Case Fan, PWM Sharing Technology (PST). A iStarUSA Sliding Rail Kit TC-RAIL-26. A THIRDREALITY Zigbee Smart Plug with Energy Monitoring to see the energy stats on Home Assistant. I will be using this video to setup Proxmox then move over Home Assistant and my webserver. We will see how it works.
Wondering about the cooler choice for this build. With a Ryzen 9 5950x, the Noctua website states that the NH-L9x65 SE-AM4 might fall below base clocks due to thermal throttle without an OC. In practice, how close did you get to thermal throttle?
I have successfully installed Proxmox on one of our servers with a public static IP. Additionally, I have installed Debian OS within a virtual machine on Proxmox. I now need to configure the Debian OS to obtain its IP address via DHCP.
A Ryzen 9 5950X does not have a gpu, it is only a cpu, you would need a G variant (an apu) of the Ryzen cpu's to have an in built gpu. So unless the motherboard has its own gpu servicing the hdmi port it will not do anything unless an apu is used. Hope that helps.
Hi! Nice video! I have a question: How did you manage to give the VM internet access? Did you set up IP tables in the Proxmox console or something similar? I’m asking because I configured the VM’s network as you mentioned, using vmbr0, but I still don’t have internet access.
Sounds like a bit of open source knowledge in your thinking also... Love that. If someone copied your business i would choose to shop with you because of how you desire and hopefully will continue to run your sustainable business (sustainable in many ways). If your like anyone else people by on lowest price alone... stay strong and continue a multidemintional quality above the rest... In the short term, hope all the long ad plays help a bit.
are consumer-grade SSDs good for running servers with like the ones you have used in this setup? How reliable are they considering servers run forever?
Hi, thanks for the info. Quick question: I can't log in to proxmox on my laptop even if I type in properly my login and password. Is there an option to remove proxmox from the mini pc server?
I've a perfectly good Dell server set up with Proxmox, but out of curiosity I wondered if I could run Proxmox with QEMU/KVM using Virt-Manager on my PC. Much to my surprise you can! I then used it to create an Alpine VM.
Can anyone explain how did he get the ip address of the IPMI port please? did he just go into the BIOS settings and grab it from there or set it to DHCP?
Could you please create a comprehensive guide to show the procedures necessary from start to finish with a Bare Metal Server? What are the steps involved in making a bare metal server fully operational from complete beginning? Actually a theoritical lecture would help to understand. Please, I googled, searched here on youtube, but no one is talking for beginners, even no precise lecture was found. (Maybe, I failed to use proper search keywords due to lack of knowledge)
i am planning to have 3x 2tb nvme in my minisforum ms-01, how should I best setup the hardsisks? one 2tb would be used for proxmox and maybe some vms and the other 2 could be for nas or something ... but no idea how this would work, any suggestions?
Do you happen to know any not such lengthy rack type case to be less than 48cm? It has to take at least 8 drives. PS I have a custom made rack construction .
My Browser doesn’t seem to connect to the server it keeps trying to connect to the IPMI motherboard on the server on my supermicro server; It Refuses to connect to the IP address i assigned it to
I just picked up a ryzen 7 3750H wo-we mini PC for my first x86 based server and got a 32 gb ram upgrade kit for a decent price instead of going with a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5, so this will definitely help
There is a bug in Debian 12 and clevis-luks. When you create a Debian 12 VM with LUKS and installed clevis-luks, the VM will not boot. However, it works on Debian 11 or Debian 12 that got upgraded from Debian 11.
I'm having problems with home assistant on proxmox running successfully for about a year but now is bombing out. even with a fresh install and a new vm, it won't start and i'm getting a communication error. to load a fresh proxmox and start over, how do I get rid of the existing debian linux system, clean the disk and start over?
Hi Jay We like whole of your proxmox series very much. We are using proxmox from its version 2. We recommend your videos to all of our new system engineers. Thank you for providing such an organized work on proxmox. We are already running ceph storage cluster on proxmox 7.x. We recently tested samsung nvme ssd as secondary storage for ceph cluster on Dell R620. kindly make series of videos to explore SDN on proxmox 8. There is very short information on proxmox documentation and on youtube about using SDN on proxmox. Thank you again for your efforts.
Wait, that CPU doesn't have ... Ohh, everyone already mentioned that :D Been there as well and learned the hard way. Luckily the newer CPUs have integrated graphics for that moment when you really need it :) Great video :)
The HDMI port shouldn't work unless u have some kind of graphics hardware. If i'm not mistaken, a 5950X does not have integrated graphics and as such, you need a dedicated GPU. I have a 3900X and this is how it is for me. Once you install a GPU, or if u have an APU, the HDMI port should work. Not sure if your board contains some kind of iGPU but i doubt it.
hi like your video, i have some questions about vm's 1 my little pc has 2-4tb sata ssd i would like to know can a VM and other vm's see these drives and use them just as they are or will i need to make virtual drives for each vm or can they share them?
Hello Jay, my debian has a problem it tells mt that it fails on automatically do the network configuration? do you have any idea what could happen here? i use my vmbr0 bridge.
Hello Jay thanks for all your video's. My mini-pc (AMD 5800H) should arrive within two weeks from China. I plan on installing proxmox with at least Windows and some Linux distro's. I am most familiar with SuSE now OpenSUSE an would like some more video's about clients for Proxmox because noVNC is more for troubleshooting. Like Spice, Apache Guacamole, X2GO, mRemoteNG, MobaXTerm or thinstation. Anything I can use for 'Remote Desktop', not many channels cover that topic and is a big miss in my eyes.

Thanks Jay , great video for getting started
for the money , and in general I think those crucial ssd drives are
great . everyone out there , you can't ever go wrong with these drives .
I plan on watching the ENTIRE series on proxmox you have here.. thanks in advance.
I wonder how I could backup the server itself.
Is there any known good way to backup a ProxMox Server, or even the cluster?
regarding the PSU: there are power supplies that follow that 3-screw in a triangle form factor, but are hard to come by. There are rackmounted chassis' with regular ATX PSU brackets if you look for it in the future :)
The PSU mounting is one of the deciding factors for me when shopping for a rackmount chassis.
TFX Form factor
@@leemachiin thanks :)
Thanks for doing this!
Thank you so much. You are a great broadcaster
Some processors have integrated video in them and others do not so if a processor does not have integrated video then the outputs for the display on the motherboard will be disabled by the processor. An example of such a processor would be the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
Thanks for doing such awesome tutorial!
Thank you, I will be watching the full series.
Can we install Proxmox on a personal computer on a AMD platform
In practice, how close did you get to thermal throttle?
possible to make a video where we enable passthrough for the gpu and cpu for diffrent os whete we can use those OS on same single proxmox machine?
That's a possibility!
@@LearnLinuxTV Can we have a how to video please?
I have successfully installed Proxmox on one of our servers with a public static IP. Additionally, I have installed Debian OS within a virtual machine on Proxmox. I now need to configure the Debian OS to obtain its IP address via DHCP.
A Ryzen 9 5950X does not have a gpu, it is only a cpu, you would need a G variant (an apu) of the Ryzen cpu's to have an in built gpu.
So unless the motherboard has its own gpu servicing the hdmi port it will not do anything unless an apu is used.
Hope that helps.
Awesome videos man!
Man with the VMware/Broadcom move, I bet this video is getting a LOT more views!
That's what brought me here
Can you make a video on proper ddos protection for a home server?
Great YT! How do you verify the ISO with the checksum?
Hi! Nice video! I have a question: How did you manage to give the VM internet access? Did you set up IP tables in the Proxmox console or something similar? I’m asking because I configured the VM’s network as you mentioned, using vmbr0, but I still don’t have internet access.
Wondering if the HDMI port. Is it possible that the HDMI is only usable with on-board CPU graphics? Like an AMD desktop APU, Ryzen Pro, or Intel iGPU?
Sounds like a bit of open source knowledge in your thinking also...
Love that.
If someone copied your business i would choose to shop with you because of how you desire and hopefully will continue to run your sustainable business (sustainable in many ways).
If your like anyone else people by on lowest price alone... stay strong and continue a multidemintional quality above the rest...
In the short term, hope all the long ad plays help a bit.
are consumer-grade SSDs good for running servers with like the ones you have used in this setup? How reliable are they considering servers run forever?
How do you get the black template That looks nice
Hi, thanks for the info. Quick question: I can't log in to proxmox on my laptop even if I type in properly my login and password. Is there an option to remove proxmox from the mini pc server?
How about to plug in another server in to VE to create cluster ?
(Maybe, I failed to use proper search keywords due to lack of knowledge)
the 5959X does not have a GPU, for AMD, the G at the end typically indicates the CPU has a built-in GPU.
i am planning to have 3x 2tb nvme in my minisforum ms-01,
how should I best setup the hardsisks?
one 2tb would be used for proxmox and maybe some vms and the other 2 could be for nas or something ... but no idea how this would work, any suggestions?
Do you happen to know any not such lengthy rack type case to be less than 48cm? It has to take at least 8 drives.
PS I have a custom made rack construction .
You rock man!! Great video. On point
You need a g series Ryzen with built in gpu or external gpu. You don’t have a gpu to run that HDMI port
I'm having problems with home assistant on proxmox running successfully for about a year but now is bombing out. even with a fresh install and a new vm, it won't start and i'm getting a communication error. to load a fresh proxmox and start over, how do I get rid of the existing debian linux system, clean the disk and start over?
did you email support about hdmi? i had similar thing with my x470 asrockrack...there was a bios setting i had to change
Thank you! your video was very helpful.
Hi Jay
We like whole of your proxmox series very much.
13:40 if you already have it installed and are wanting to just know how it works.
Wait, that CPU doesn't have ... Ohh, everyone already mentioned that :D
Been there as well and learned the hard way. Luckily the newer CPUs have integrated graphics for that moment when you really need it :)
Great video :)
Not sure if your board contains some kind of iGPU but i doubt it.
hi like your video, i have some questions about vm's 1 my little pc has 2-4tb sata ssd
i would like to know can a VM and other vm's see these drives and use them just as they are or will i need to make virtual drives for each vm or can they share them?
is this alright to use without a license?
Hello Jay, my debian has a problem it tells mt that it fails on automatically do the network configuration? do you have any idea what could happen here? i use my vmbr0 bridge.
How about start VM to BIOS or UEFI? Handy for some installs.
I want to use my 500gb nvme ssd for proxmox and virtual machines and stuff... and my 4tb ssd to store media.. what option should i choose?
Hello Jay thanks for all your video's. My mini-pc (AMD 5800H) should arrive within two weeks from China. I plan on installing proxmox with at least Windows and some Linux distro's. I am most familiar with SuSE now OpenSUSE an would like some more video's about clients for Proxmox because noVNC is more for troubleshooting. Like Spice, Apache Guacamole, X2GO, mRemoteNG, MobaXTerm or thinstation. Anything I can use for 'Remote Desktop', not many channels cover that topic and is a big miss in my eyes.
I'm always stuck at guest not running after setup VM. Any help?
Does it work on WiFi at all ? Or only plugged in to router ?
i dont know whats wrong but i cant get updates. It always says 401 unauthorized [IP: ...] apt-get update failed: exit code 100
Brilliant, thank you!
